VOICE OF THE PEOPLE (Letters)

August 26, 2007

Fighting terrorists

The Tribune is to be congratulated for publishing the letters to the editor
(Voice of the people, Aug. 19) regarding the dire situation in Kosovo in
response to "Liberating Kosovo" (Editorial, Aug. 13). Since the beginning of
the war that started in Bosnia, virtually no attention has been given to the
voice of the Serbs and it was gratifying to see letters giving them that
voice.

Professor John Schindler of the strategy department at the Naval War College
and former National Security Agency intelligence analyst writes of the
shocking story in his book, "Unholy Terror: Bosnia, Al-Qa'ida and the Rise
of Global Jihad," just how Osama bin Laden successfully exploited the
Bosnian conflict for his own ends, why Bosnia and its secret jihad matter to
America and our war on terrorism today and how bin Laden used Bosnia as a
base for terrorist operations worldwide -- including attacks on the United
States from the Millennium Plot to Sept. 11, 2001.

Today we are seeing the result of that blowback due to the mishandling of
the latest Balkan war. At one time, there were 40,000 Serbs living in
Pristina, the capital of Kosovo. Today there are approximately 150 Serbs,
mostly elderly too terrified to leave their ghetto without the protection of
NATO troops for fear of being killed by Albanian mobs. If Kosovo Albanians
achieve their independence, it would guarantee the final eradication of
Serbia's culture, language and religion in Serbia's Jerusalem. Furthermore
Kosovo would be in the hands of Kosovo's prime minister, Agim Ceku, who,
according to Jane's Defense Weekly, masterminded two of the grizzliest
episodes of slaughter against the Serbs in the Yugoslav war. Is this to whom
we are to entrust the lives of the remaining Serbs?

After Sept. 11, 2001, President Bush told the American people that we would
do whatever it takes to defend our country against Muslim terrorists, yet we
denied the Serbs the right to defend themselves against the same Muslim
terrorists that we are fighting today.
