Karadzic being held in same jail as Milosevic was

Released : Wednesday, July 30, 2008 3:36 AM

THE HAGUE, Netherlands-War crimes suspect Radovan Karadzic moved into
a jail cell Wednesday in the same high-security prison that once
housed his former mentor, the late ex-Yugoslav President Slobodan
Milosevic, and where other former allies and enemies are in custody.

The jail of the U.N. Yugoslav tribunal is in a separate wing of a
Dutch prison in Scheveningen, a coastal suburb of The Hague.

It is a short commute by prison car to the court where Karadzic will
face 11 charges of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity
during the 1992-1995 Bosnian war.

Suspects remain at the center until the completion of their trials and
appeals process. Those convicted serve the remainder of their
sentences in other countries that volunteer to imprison them.

The center, which has 84 cells, currently has 37 other detainees from
the Balkan wars of the early 1990s. Each cell, measuring 5.1 meters by
3 meters (17 by 10 feet), is fitted with a shower, toilet, wash basin
and desk.

Cell doors are left open most of the day, except for a brief midday
period to allow for a change of the guards. Prisoners may have
computers, but are not allowed Internet access.

Inmates receive Dutch, German, Belgian and French television channels,
as well as satellite reception in their own language. Courses in arts,
languages or sciences are available. They share a gym, outdoor
courtyard, library and a recreation room for darts, table tennis and
board games.

They have access to a doctor, nurse and psychiatrist and to a hospital
in the adjoining Dutch prison.
