Saakashvili’s phone call rebuffed by Medvedev

Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili tried to call
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev last night, but
Medvedev refused to talk to his Georgian counterpart,
Irakly Alasania, Georgia’s Permanent Representative to
the United Nations, said at a UN Security Council
meeting in New York.

Alasania, echoed by the US Representative, explained
Medvedev’s rebuff as Russia’s unwillingness to hold
negotiations.

“Would any decent man talk to Mikhail Saakashvili
after all that has happened?” replied Vitaly Churkin,
the Permanent Representative of Russia to the UN.

He stressed that Saakashvili had promised not to use
force against the breakaway republics of Abzhazia and
South Ossetia, and by giving orders to attack South
Ossetia he breached the existing agreements.

Churkin said Russia was prepared for talks with
Georgia, conditional on the withdrawal of Georgian
troops from South Ossetia, a ceasefire and the signing
by Georgia of an agreement against the use of force in
South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
