Basesku: State integrity above minority rights

August 11, 2008

Collective rights of national minorities cannot be placed above the
principle of state integrity and sovereignty, and the basic negative
example for this is the case of Kosmet – stated Romanian President
Trajan Basesku. The so-called collective rights were given priority in
the southern Serbian province in regard to integrity of the state of
Serbia, and the consequences are now clearly seen in Caucasus – Basesku
pointed. He emphasized that authorities in Bucharest adamantly oppose
practice of drastic violation of basic norms of international law, which
clearly guarantee preservation of territorial integrity and respect of
the principle of borders’ sacrosanctity.
