Ivanko: 1.400 UNMIK employees losing jobs

August 11, 2008

Over the next few months, some 1.400 UNMIK employees will lose their
jobs since the reconfiguration of international presence in Kosmet
commenced – stated UNMIK spokesperson Aleksandar Ivanko. He said that
only 30% or some 600 members of the current staff will remain in the
mission, while no decision has been made yet in regard to the future
number of UNMIK members and their competences in north Kosmet where the
Serbs represent the majority population. Official Belgrade and
representatives of local Serbs requested on several occasions that UNMIK
remains in this part of the province, as they do not agree with the
arrival of the EU mission without approval of the UN SC.
