Serbia: Most Serbs 'long for the communist era'

Belgrade, 1 Oct. (AKI) - Ten years after former strongman Slobodan Milosevic
was ousted in a popular revolt, the great majority of Serbian citizens believe
they were better off in the communist era of late Yugoslav president Tito than
today, according to a survey.

The survey, published by left-leaning Belgrade daily Danas on Friday, showed
that 81 per cent of surveyed citizens said they had a better quality of life
under communism than under the present democratic government.

A survey, conducted on a sample of 1,813 citizens, showed that only ten percent
believed they have a better life today.

Only six percent said they preferred life under Milosevic's leadership, when
the country was engulfed in wars and suffered international sanctions.

Serbia is grappling with a dire economic crisis, rampant crime and corruption.
The average monthly wage has fallen below 300 euros.

The country’s foreign debt has tripled to almost 30 billion euros since 2000,
and 23 percent of people believe the country is run by criminals, the survey
showed.
