Can you try the following:
Set your parallel port to "ECP" or "bi-directional" in the BIOS setup.
Install the hpoj package:
urpmi hpoj
Edit /etc/ptal-start.conf by removing the "#" in the beginning of the lines:
#ptal-mlcd par:0 ...
#ptal-printd mlc:par:0 ...
near the end of the file.
Start the hpoj daemon
service hpoj start
Start PrinterDrake (command: "printerdrake") or the Mandrake Control
center (choose "Hardware" and then "Printer" here). You will see the
main menu of PrinterDrake now.
Click the "Expert Mode" button at the lower right.
Click on the entry for your OfficeJet printer and click "OK". In the
next dialog choose "Printer connection type" and then "Local printer".
Now type "/dev/ptal-printd/mlc_par_0" as the "Printer Device".
Click "OK" and try to print again. Now it should work with cdj850 (at
least according to the authors of hpoj, I do not have such a device to
test).
If it does not work check the comments in /etc/ptal-start.conf and also
the documentation in /usr/share/doc/hpoj-0.8/ for further options. Check
also the documentation for how to set up scanning with your device.
If all this does not help, try all the drivers offered for the HP
DeskJet 850C.
Please tell me all your results as soon as possible so that I can
correct the database, advice the HPOJ authors, and have a Mandrake 8.1
correctly supporting the HP OJ 1150C.
