Maybe They Should Try This In Palm Beach

"A deadlocked election ended yesterday with an Old West-style draw of the
cards in this virtual ghost town (Goldfield, Nevada). Republican Dolores
'Dee' Honeycutt and Democrat R.J. Gillum, who tied 107-107 for an open seat
on the Esmerelda County Commission, each pulled a jack in the ornate
courthouse. But Mr. Gillum's spade beat Miss Honeycutt's diamond."

How Would Jesus Vote?

OK, for those of you who missed the disclaimer at the end of the piece on
DNC Chairman Terry McAuliffe's plan to launch a "How Would Jesus Vote?"
campaign to encourage more religious folks to vote Democrat, this was a
SPOOF. It wasn't a real proposal by Mac and the Democrats. It was satire.

Still.

When I first read it, I didn't automatically dismiss the notion out of hand,
and neither did many of you. For example, News & Views reader Erik Hanson
wrote: "Call me crazy, but while I was reading the satirical article about
Terry McAuliffe's 'How Would Jesus Vote?', I honestly thought that I was
reading a truly published article...which just goes to show you that it is
not a stretch of the imagination to believe that something like this might
happen."

While I immediately thought such an effort would have been about as low as
one could go, I, too wouldn't have put it past McAuliffe. And what's that
say about how totally bankrupt of character the Democrat Party has become
since Bill Clinton was selected as their top banana just a short decade ago?

All We Can Say Is...Whew!

"...I would like to just set the record straight. I have absolutely no
interest in caucusing with the Republican Party and I have absolutely no
desire to rejoin the party."

Well, That Didn't Take Long

"The nation's largest union for federal employees moved this week to
represent passenger and baggage screeners at Baltimore-Washington
International Airport, marking the first labor challenge for the new
Department of Homeland Security. . . . The American Federation of Government
Employees (AFGE) filed a petition to represent the workers who screen
baggage and passengers at BWI Airport."

Blacklash in the Bayou

"I am not going to support her or vote for her (Democrat Louisiana Sen. Mary
Landrieu in the December run-off election), but I'm not going to say
anything horrible about her either - I'm just going to tell the truth.
Sometimes you get tired of white Democrats taking black votes for granted."

- Black Democrat Louisiana state Sen. Gregg Tarver, Washington Times,
11/21/02

Those Voices In Their Heads

"The (Bush) administration may well find itself under great pressure to
avoid a political bloodletting by not nominating someone (to the Supreme
Court) who will rile the Democrats. The voices of compromise are always
seductive - and too often over the years the Republicans have heeded those
voices."

- Columnist Thomas Sowell

Ambulance Chasers Running Amok

"On Wednesday, U.S. District Court Judge Robert Sweet heard arguments in a
case in which two New York City teenagers sued McDonald's for making them
fat. It demonstrates why a top agenda item for the newly empowered
Republican Party should be reining in trial attorneys run amok."

Big Macs Heading for Tobacco Road

"Never underestimate the tenacity of a lawyer working on a contingency fee.
. . . (We could see) state lawsuits against fast-food companies for the
public costs of obesity, just as states were so successful in suing tobacco
companies for the public cost of smoking."

- Ambulance-chaser John Banzhaf, a leader in the area of ridiculous lawsuits

Suing the Blob

"Many people have chuckled at stories about people suing the 'Big Food' and
'Big Tobacco' industries. As frivolous as these cases may be, we should get
serious about charging the public school system with committing widespread
educational malpractice."

"Chuck. I think there should be a class-action lawsuit against trial

Illegal Amnesty Idea Coming Back...

"The Bush administration wants to grant amnesty to hundreds of thousands of
Mexican illegal aliens now in the United States, according to the new U.S.
ambassador to Mexico. Tony Garza, sworn in this week at the White House,
told reporters in Mexico City that reaching an accord legalizing the status
of Mexican immigrants - without giving them citizenship - continues to be a
top administration priority."

- Washington Times, 11/23/02

...But Not Without a Fight

"Several Republicans on Capitol Hill are expected to oppose any effort to
grant amnesty, led, in part, by the Congressional Immigration Reform Caucus.
The caucus has called the amnesty proposal 'a kick in the teeth to the
thousands of individuals across the world who are legally attempting to
enter the United States.'

" 'Instead, the United States is saying, 'Why wait? Sneak on in. Whether you
enter illegally or not, you will be a resident or citizen in no time,' '
said Rep. Tom Tancredo, Colorado Republican and caucus chairman. 'The first
lesson these new residents will learn about the United States is it is OK to
break the law. Is that the America we want to build?' "

- Washington Times, 11/23/02

Duck, Duck, Goose(Step)

"Jonathan Cross, a nine-year-old fourth-grader at the Fred A. Anderson
Elementary School in Bayboro, N.C., wore his duck-hunting outfit to school
the other day, WorldNetDaily reports:

" 'But there was something in his pocket he had forgotten about--a shotgun
shell left over from an outing with his father and brothers last weekend.
His discovery of the item while on campus has left the straight-A student
stunned with a five-day suspension, his teachers in tears, and his parents
perplexed over the latest case of 'zero tolerance' in the government school
system.'

"We know what you're thinking: What the heck was Jonathan doing wearing a
duck-hunting outfit to school? He was participating--we kid you not--in the
school's official Camouflage Day."

Libertarian Outreach

Not to beat a dead horse here, but if the Republican Party wants to attract
more libertarians into our political coalition, it's going to have to give
something to get something. It's going to have to make itself politically
attractive by championing some legitimate libertarian issues which won't, at
the same time, turn off independents and other members inside the GOP's
"tent."

Prof. Randy Barnett of the Boston University School of Law and senior fellow
at the Cato Institute has written an excellent article in National Review
Online outlining some specific ways in which Republicans could do just that.
