Sounds Like We Need More Audits

"Officials say members of the Washington Teachers' Union were overcharged in
dues by an amount totaling more than $700,000. . . . The union's executive
board demanded the resignation of President Barbara Bullock after an audit
of the union's records."

Daschle's Guerrilla War

"Ironically, the Democrats were waging a guerrilla war against homeland
security legislation while simultaneously excoriating President Bush for not
having delivered Osama's head on a platter. Sen. Tom Daschle, South Dakota
Democrat, still smarting from the Nov. 5 elections, had the temerity to
declare: 'We've got to find Mohammed Omar, we've got to find Osama bin
Laden, we've got to find other key leaders of the al Qaeda network or we
will have failed.' Tough talk for someone who complicated President Bush's
efforts to prosecute such a fight."

Left Eying Filibusters for Judges

"Republicans, having recaptured control of the Senate next year, are vowing
to confirm more of President Bush's judicial nominees - many of whom had
been blocked by the Democrats.(but at) least one liberal group is urging
Senate Democrats and moderate Republicans to filibuster conservative
judicial nominees on the Senate floor if necessary.

"People for the American Way President Ralph Neas said Mr. Bush will
probably 'want the Senate to be his rubber stamp' for judges. But Mr. Neas
said if the president does not start nominating more moderate judges,
'Democrats and moderate Republicans must oppose those nominations, and they
must be willing to use all the parliamentary options at their disposal,
including, when necessary, the filibuster.'

"Judicial nominees have rarely been subjected to a filibuster, which is when
senators speak at length on the Senate floor to prevent a measure from
receiving a vote. To break a filibuster in the Senate, 60 votes are
necessary.

Now In for "Jumpin' Jim" Jeffords, Jim Inhofe

"The shift from Democratic to Republican control of the Senate is perhaps
nowhere more dramatic than in the ascension of Sen. James M. Inhofe,
Oklahoma Republican, to head the Environment and Public Works Committee.
Blunt-spoken and unabashedly conservative, Mr. Inhofe, 68, is almost the
mirror opposite in his views on environmental issues of the outgoing
chairman, Sen. James Jeffords of Vermont (I).

"For industry leaders, Mr. Inhofe represents a welcome relief from what they
view as the excessive environmental regulation proposed by Mr. Jeffords.
Under Mr. Inhofe, there won't be 'the same rush to produce a solution that
was far out of step with the problem, as was the case under Jeffords,' said
Dan Riedinger, a spokesman for the Edison Electric Institute, a trade
association for the utility industry."

It's the Government, Stupid

"When the federal government is right-sized, that is, downsized, then it
costs less to operate. When it costs less, then taxes need not be raised.
In fact, if the federal government would cut just 10 percent of the
personnel now employed, citizens would get tax rebates beyond their wildest
imaginations. Forget about a new set of tires for the family minivan - how
about a new minivan?

"Far be it for me to suggest what the Bush administration should do next -
but I, for one, can think of at least a half-dozen federal agencies that are
either unnecessary or hugely overstaffed. Remember, personnel costs are the
major budget buster when you consider funding."

- Gary Aldrich, founder of the Patrick Henry Center for Individual Liberty

Black Like Him

"With the retirement of Rep. J.C. Watts Jr.,.(the) Oklahoma Republican's
brief but high-profile career in Congress comes to an end after four terms
in the House. Mr. Watts, the only black Republican, has left the door open
to returning in the future - perhaps in a Senate bid - but has not decided
what he will do in the immediate future.

"...Mr. Watts has a new book out, 'What Color is a Conservative?' He has
endured criticism in the past from some blacks for being a conservative, but
has dismissed it. 'I'm way too secure in who I am to need somebody to
validate me as a black man, as a Republican, as whatever,' he said. 'It's
just never been my cup of tea.'"

- Washington Times, 11/24/02

What Would Jesus Drive

"A coalition of religious leaders calling itself the Interfaith Climate and
Energy Campaign has announced it will soon launch a media war against sports
utility vehicles titled 'What Would Jesus Drive?'

"Actually, we know what Jesus drove. When he entered Jerusalem on his final,
fateful journey, he was riding an ass, a long-eared relative of the horse,
according to St. Matthew. In its day, the ass was the highest-powered, most
polluting form of conveyance known - with the possible exception of the
camel.

"Imagine if every American turned in his or her car today for what Jesus
used to drive. Among other things, we would be knee-deep in manure. And in
the 19th century, up to 15,000 dead horses a year had to be cleared from New
York City's streets alone.

"We would also be neck-deep in injuries, as anybody who has spent any time
around these skittish, unpredictable animals knows. Today's liability
lawyers would love a society dependent on animal transportation."

Mount Up!

Grassroots activism proved itself in the 2002 midterm elections, where
old-fashioned shoe leather and door-to-door voter identification and
get-out-the-vote efforts were a deciding factor in the surprising Republican
victories from coast-to-coast on November 5th.

The non-partisan Leadership Institute is the single best training program
for folks interested in learning how to conduct grassroots operations the
RIGHT way. Their two-day Grassroots Activist school is a must-attend for
