Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?

Hey, folks. As you go about your holiday gift-giving this weekend, would
you consider setting ten bucks aside for yours truly? Let me explain...

I first started publishing News & Views almost seven long years ago (though
it seems like only yesterday). Frankly, I thoroughly enjoy researching and
producing the newsletter and consider it a kind of "therapy."

It makes it even more worthwhile to know that some 20,000+ of you also find
it a valuable read almost every day, as well. And I can't tell you how
happy it makes me when we use this Internet thingy that Al Gore invented to
flame the butts of politically-correct bozos on the left when they do
absolutely outrageous and stupid things.

However.

Now that I have a "real job" and have moved back east (where things are a
LOT more expensive), it has become increasingly difficult to continue
publishing News & Views on a regular basis. Contrary to popular opinion, I'
m not one of those "rich Republicans" (though I sure hope to be one some day
when I grow up!) who doesn't have to work for a living.

But the big enemy is...time.

I just don't have as much of it any longer, especially with two young
daughters who would rather I play hide-and-seek with them at night and on
weekends than hunt-and-peck on the computer keyboard.

And get this: These kids actually expect FOOD, too. And not just a couple
times a week, but a couple dozen times every DAY!

So, seriously, I need to make a tough decision:

Either begin hiring out for certain things such as database management,
bookkeeping, research, marketing development, lawn mowing, etc., in order to
"buy" more time . . . or stop publishing the newsletter.

The problem is, this newsletter has always been free for the asking and I
can't see changing that after so many years. In addition, I've never
devoted much space to advertising in this newsletter and, honestly, I don't
want News & Views to become one huge advertising billboard like some other
newsletters. Nor will I sell or rent out my confidential subscriber list.

That doesn't leave a whole lot of options.

In fact, the only solution I've been able to come up with is a "reverse Bill
Clinton."

You'll recall that the former impeached president was the guy who gave us
the absurd notion of "paid volunteerism." That's where you and I get to pay
others through mandatory taxation to volunteer to do things government
shouldn't be doing in the first place.

Instead, I'm setting up a "Voluntary Subscription" gift fund for those of
you who might feel generous enough to contribute $10 toward the continued
publication of News & Views.

Kinda like a free-market PBS for conservatives.

So if you'd like to help me continue publishing News & Views, I hope you'll
keep me in mind with the mailman and the paper boy during your holiday
shopping this weekend and consider going to the web site and making a
voluntary subscription gift of just $10.

Heck, where else can you get such great "Anti-Liberal B.S. Repellant" for
that kind of money?

Seriously folks, if you can kick in a small gift this holiday season, I'd be
extremely grateful (and my kids will be able to put away those "Will Vote
for Food" signs). Just go to: http://chuckmuth.com/eshop/default.cfm?c=3
and click "Add."

Or if you're an AOL subscriber (they still don't play nice in the sandbox
with other Internet services) or prefer to use a check rather than credit
card - or wish to make an even larger gift than $10 - then please make your
check out to:

Thank you...and Merry Christmas!

In Defense of "Evil" Drug Companies

"Are you angry with the 'profiteers' of the pharmaceutical industry? As
recently as 50 to 100 years ago, the leading causes of death were typhoid,
small pox, tuberculosis, diphtheria, and diarrhea. Polio crippled and killed
hundreds of thousands of children and infants in the 1930s. Those diseases
have been wiped out thanks to the 'evil' drug companies, and now even the
two remaining leading killers, heart disease and cancer, are being
successfully combated by modern drugs and medical treatments."

- Columnist and senior fellow at the Cato Institute Stephen Moore

PETA to the Rescue

"The next great source of intellectual vitality for the Democrats is People
for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. I predict a vast increase in the power
of PETA at the next Democratic National Convention. PETA will help the
Democrats win back the farm vote, at least among vegetable farmers. PETA's
influence will prove that the Democrats are not insensitive to the issue of
life, at least life among the feathered and fur-bearing."

- Columnist R. Emmett Tyrrell Jr.

Squashing Democrats Like a Bug

"Mr. Universe may or may not be the ultimate Republican dreamboat, but who
could better suit Californians, who live in a universe very different from
the rest of us? Ready or not, here comes the Terminator, muscles still
bulging at 55, with wit, whimsy and wisecracks. Arnold Schwarzenegger -
fortunately for newspaper copy desks everywhere, he's already called just
'S' here on the Left Coast - is still playing at coy but he's already the
front-runner for governor in '06.

"...The Terminator already has the spit and polish of an accomplished
politician. This astonished some people, always eager to find reasons to
diss Republicans, who were ready to write him off. He has the Gipper's
self-deprecating wit (as well as the ready-made nickname).

"...Democrats here reckon, and certain Republican analysts and consultants
agree, that he could be stopped best in a Republican primary. He makes no
pretense of being a social-issues Republican. . . . That makes him suspect
with many Republican primary voters, who may or may not be so weary of
losing statewide races that they would be willing to swallow a little
ideology to get another winner. Ideology aside, he talks the talk
Republicans and conservatives and a lot of independents like to hear.

"...Whatever else a Terminator is, he is not a wimp. When Maria Shriver told
her family that she would marry a ruff-and-tuff Republican, she was ready
for their incredulity. 'I don't want you to think of him as a Republican,'
she said. 'I want you to think of him as the man I love. Or if not that,
think of him as someone who could squash you like a bug.' "

- Wesley Pruden, "Pruden On Politics," 11/26/02
