The More the Merrier

"Dear Chuck: I am on a lot of lists for updates, but I have to admit that
yours is by far the most interesting, the most informative, and the most
biting of any I receive. Keep up the great work. You make my day!"

- News & Views reader Mike Sudlow of Hauula, Hawaii

If you know someone who might like to join the growing army of
conservative/libertarians (and a few Palm Beach Democrats) who receive Chuck
Muth's News & Views briefings, just go to http://www.chuckmuth.com.

Reality Check

An email from one News & Views subscriber was rather cynical about my
request on Saturday for a holiday "Voluntary Subscription" gift of $10 to
help me continue publishing the newsletter.

The reader pointed out that if all of my 20,000 subscribers gave just $10,
that would equate to a whopping windfall of over $200,000. Hoo-hah!

The reader also pointed out that this was far more than the local paperboy
could expect in tips this holiday season. Point taken.

Now a little reality:

In fact, just 81 of the current 21,247 News & Views subscribers made a
voluntary $10 contribution on Saturday and another 38 on Sunday (not
counting those gifts being sent by mail). And I'm extremely grateful for
the kindness and generosity shown by each and every last one of them.

But trust me, I ain't chartering no cruises to the Bahamas here.

Anyway, for those of you who haven't yet kicked in a small donation for the
cause, you can read all the details about the "Voluntary Subscription" drive
and make your gift by going to:

Please...give 'til it hurts! Don't make me call my mama. :)

Driving Mr. Jesus

"If one is guessing Jesus' automotive preferences, there is no reason to
believe he wouldn't have driven to his confrontation with the temple
money-changers in an imposing Ford Excursion."

- Columnist Rich Lowry

Run Al, Run

"Watching Al Gore make his re-entry into the public arena after nearly two
years out of the spotlight, I can say with confidence there is a substantial
group of people who want him to run for president again in 2004. They're
called Republicans."

- Columnist Steve Chapman

Fools Need Not Apply

"Now that Bush is in charge, America has wiped our collective brow in great
relief. In a real crisis, our perspective changed. We prefer adults.
Leaders. We don't want fools. We view Al Gore with pathos usually reserved
for that deli clerk who's bombing on Open Mike Nite at the dumpy comedy club
you accidentally stumbled into after the bachelor party."

- Tom Adkins, publisher, The Common Conservative

No Hunting

"Democratic leader Tom Daschle has been whining all over TV, saying that
Rush Limbaugh and other talk show hosts have been inciting violence against
Democrats. Which is illegal you know, attacking an endangered species."

- "Tonight Show" host Jay Leno

***********************************
No Lock-Step Republican

"I was one of Bush's biggest critics in the first two years because he was
siding with the Democrats on every important domestic issue. Campaign
finance reform - I flipped a wig. There was no reason (for) that. That's
an assault on the First Amendment."

- Radio talk-show host Rush Limbaugh in an interview on CNN's "Reliable
Sources" with Howard Kurtz

Big Mac Attack

"In pursuit of corporate deep pockets, a substantial number of Americans
seem willing to portray themselves as complete idiots. Yes, we are talking
about the lawsuit filed against McDonald's on behalf of eight teenagers who
have become obese and have other health problems after years of gobbling Big
Macs and fries on a daily basis.

"...This is beyond satire. Where does one begin? . . . With the 15-year-old
who is so greedy for money that he is willing to tell the word he's too
stupid to know that milkshakes are fattening? And please note, these folks
are seeking to begin a class action. Step right up to join the first class
action in history on behalf of stupid fat people.

"...Particularly unstupid are the trial lawyers who rake in huge fees in
this scam."

- Columnist Mona Charen

Insurance Industry's "Perfect Storm"

"The year 2001 started off poorly for insurance companies: Juries awarded
huge payouts for asbestos claims, medical malpractice insurance rates drove
doctors out of business, and homeowners saw their insurance rates climb from
floods, storms and mold. And the trial lawyers, as one industry analyst put
it, 'continued to run amok.' Then terrorists slammed airliners into the
World Trade Center."

- Tom Ramstack, Washington Times, 12/1/02

Terrorism & Immigration

"Terrorism is primarily a problem of dangerous aliens coming into the United
States because government policy allows them to violate and evade current
laws, and because many laws and regulations encourage open-borders policies.

"...Congress should deny visas to aliens from countries that sponsor
terrorism, and order the State Department to terminate its ridiculous policy
that mere advocacy of terrorism is not sufficient to deny a visa.

"Congress should put a moratorium on the numbers of immigrants admitted
until the Immigration and Naturalization Service puts into effect a system
to find and track the thousands of aliens the Justice Department wants to
question about terrorism. Congress should deport illegal aliens when
caught."

- Columnist Phyllis Schlafly

Paid Chaplains

"Twenty-two members of Congress and a public interest law firm have asked a
federal court to dismiss a lawsuit brought by a California atheist that
claims congressional chaplains are unconstitutional. . . . In a
friend-of-the-court brief the group filed Nov. 22 in the U.S. District Court
in Washington on behalf of itself and six U.S. senators and 16 House
members, the ACLJ (American Center for Law and Justice) held that the U.S.
Supreme Court has 'clearly upheld the constitutionality of paid chaplains.'
"
