*********************************** And H-Rod Takes the Lead "Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York is the front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2004, now that former Vice President Al Gore says he will not run, according to a new Time/CNN poll released yesterday. "...The Time/CNN poll was the second major survey this week to indicate Mrs. Clinton would be the favorite among Democrats if she decided to become a presidential contender. A USA Today/CNN/Gallup Poll released Thursday found that when she was included among a list of possible Democratic presidential candidates, Mrs. Clinton was the clear front-runner." - Washington Times, 12/22/02 *********************************** Multiply Like Rabbits If you know someone who might like to receive News & Views, you can sign 'em up at: http://www.chuckmuth.com. *********************************** Perish the Thought "Dear Chuck: This morning's paper here in Tennessee has started printing the rhetoric regarding Senator Frist having made racial statements. It is myconsidered opinion that Jesus Christ could come back and run for office on the Republican ticket and he too would be labeled RACIST. "I am sick and tired of it. I truly believe the Clinton gang will keep this alive in an effort to feed and breed even more hatred within the black community to enable her to win the presidency either in '04 or'08. Just think of that scum in our White House again." - News & Views reader Joan Harding of Lascassas, TN *********************************** Who's On Frist? Trent Lott's political corpse wasn't even cold before the long knives came out for his presumed replacement as the GOP's new top dog in the Senate, Sen. Bill Frist of Tennessee. Among the charges: He's not pro-life, he's too pro-immigrant and he's not a conservative. Let me be the first to admit I don't know much about the man, but will naturally pass along relevant information as it comes up over the next several weeks. However, let me note for the record that Sen. Frist received a perfect 100 in his American Conservative Union (ACU) rating last year and sports an overall lifetime rating of 88. That sure doesn't appear to qualify the guy for even "moderate" status, let alone be a RINO. But those of you who believe otherwise are encouraged to educate me on why you think this guy is so bad. - Chuck Muth, Editor *********************************** Puttin' the Garbage Out "This isn't the first time Mr. Lott has come between Republicans and their principles. In fact, speaking of Bill Clinton, remember impeachment? "In January 1999, Mr. Lott met with the 13 House managers, led by Rep. Henry Hyde, after the House of Representatives momentously and unexpectedly impeached the 42nd president. As David P. Schippers, chief investigative counsel for the impeachment, writes in his book, 'Sell Out,' 'I'll never forget the very first words out of his [Trent Lotts] mouth: 'Henry, you're not going to dump this garbage on us.' ' "Garbage? Seems that Mr. Lott had 'important matters' to address - as opposed to two articles of impeachment ('garbage') - and couldn't be bothered with a constitutionally-mandated Senate trial, as evidenced by the sham proceeding that followed." - Columnist Diana West *********************************** Pot Calling the Kettle Black (So to Speak) Beating the proverbial dead horse over the Trent Lott mess, Rep. Charlie Rangel told Fox News on Friday that the "real issue is the racism that exists in the Republican Party." This kind of self-serving, inflammatory, race-baiting is par for the course by the Rangels of the world. But then he went on to "prove" his claim with the following: "When you have a Republican majority and you don't have one black in it, something is seriously wrong." Now, as Democrats never cease to remind us, that "majority" in the U.S. is paper-thin. The D's have an almost equal number of senators as the R's. So tell us, Mr. Rangel, how many black Democrat senators are there? Names, please. People in glass houses. ************************************ Long Savings on Long Distance! Also left on walls and doors spanning three floors of the dorm: A tree with a noose and hanging stick figure and vulgar references to genitalia drawn in blue window chalk. . . . If the attackers had been white, they faced possible federal prison time. Because the suspects are black, the most serious consequence they face is expulsion. Welcome to equal treatment under the law, 2002-style." - Columnist Michelle Malkin *********************************** Winning Over Minority Voters the GOP Way "Today, when going after minority voters, Republicans can offer things that Democrats cannot possibly offer - the most important being vouchers to provide a decent education for their children. Democrats have to oppose vouchers because the teachers' unions oppose vouchers - and Democrats are beholden to these unions, both for money and for their ability to get out the votes on election nights. "It is Democrats who are for disarming law-abiding citizens in the face of heavily armed criminals. Hard data show that crimes against minorities and women have declined the most where state laws have allowed citizens with clean records to carry guns. "Republicans need to appeal to minority voters with Republican issues, not by trying to imitate the Democrats." - Columnist Thomas Sowell ********************************** A Taxing Situation "Suppose I hire you to repair my computer. The job is worth $200 to me, and doing the job is worth $200 to you. The transaction will occur because we have a meeting of the mind. Now suppose there's the imposition of a 30 percent income tax on you. That means you won't receive $200 but instead $140. You might say the heck with working for me - spending the day with your family is worth more than $140. "You might then offer that you'll do the job if I pay you $285. That way your after-tax earnings will be $200 - what the job was worth to you. There's a problem. The repair job was worth $200 to me, not $285. So it's my turn to say the heck with it. "This simple example demonstrates that one effect of taxes is that of eliminating transactions, and hence jobs. . . . Here's a question for you: Would we and society be better off if you and I agreed to the repair job but did not tell anybody? I would say yes, but we would be criminals." - Columnist Walter Williams *********************************** Your Union Dues At Work "Federal investigators are accusing former top officials of the Washington Teachers' Union of using more than $2 million of members' dues to buy themselves luxury items, including a $20,000 fur coat and a $57,000 Tiffany silver service. "...The affidavit charges that (former WTU president Barbara) Bullock spent more than $1 million in union funds to buy nearly $500,000 in custom-made clothing; $11,000 worth of shoes; a $6,800 ice bucket from Neiman-Marcus, the high-end department store; and two sheets and two pillow cases that cost $1,195." - Washington Times, 12/22/02 *********************************** Look Into the Crystal Ball There's no I-told-you-so-free zone here: For the record, here's what I wrote in a "Muth's Truths" column the day BEFORE Strom Thurmond's now-infamous 100th birthday party: "So it looks like a two-year, gut-wrenching, hair-pulling, groin-kneeing, tug-o-war food fight for the heart and soul of the Democrat party leading up to the 2004 elections. Republican prospects couldn't be brighter. "Uh-oh. "I just remembered: Republicans are notorious for their ability to never blow an opportunity to blow an opportunity. And BOY, is this an opportunity. "They're doomed."
