Bah-Humbug in Baltimore

"Better not be any BB guns under the Christmas trees in Baltimore this year.
The city has made it a misdemeanor to sell or give a BB gun to anyone
younger than 18. People who violate the new ordinance - passed earlier this
month - face a $500 fine and or two months in jail."

Where the Wheels Came Off the Apple Cart

"I think (Trent Lott) got sucked into this thing, and he reacted improperly
in that he was trying to be compassionate, instead of just saying, 'Look,
you guys are wrong. There's nothing racist about what I said. We were
talking about a great man.' Instead of that, he started going sideways and
disavowing some of the things that distinguish Democrats from Republicans,
and that was very confusing to a lot of people."

- Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), CBS's "Face the Nation," 12/22/02

Haunting Patty Murray

"Sen. Patty Murray of Washington state is refusing to apologize for
extolling Osama bin Laden as a humanitarian. . . . It's an eerie echo of the
Trent Lott episode. In both cases we have U.S. senators making repugnant
comments that reinforce the worst stereotypes about their parties:
Republicans as racists, Democrats as sympathizers with America's enemies.

"...(But) Murray's remarks have not brought anything like the national
outcry that Lott's did. . . . It's also probably bad news for the Democrats.
Whereas the furor over Lott's comments forced the GOP to do the right thing
and demote him, Murray's ode to Osama is likely to come back to haunt her in
2004, when she faces re-election. In a state that leans Democratic but not
so far that it tips over, she ought to be beatable."

Moderates Command No Loyalty

"The recent apologetic flailing of Mississippi Sen. Trent Lott seemed
familiar to me, but it took a while to figure out why. Then I remembered
Oregon Sen. Robert Packwood, who, like a panicked man drowning in an icy
pool, thrashed his way from national prominence to obscurity seven years
ago, sunk by his own shortcomings.

"...The bottom line is that these things never seem to end well for
Washington moderates. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and one-time
White House staffer Oliver North came through similar media firestorms
successfully in large part because they had strong backing from the
strong-willed conservative wing of the GOP. President Clinton survived
because liberals came to his aid in times of need. Moderates just don't seem
to inspire the same sort of loyalty."

Democrats Real Losers Over Lott Mess

"Tim, I think the Democrats lost ground, in part, my old - former Senator Al
Simpson from Wyoming said to me, they have defanged [Democratic leader Sen.
Tom Daschle of South Dakota] now. Daschle can stand up there and point his
finger and talk about those rotten, evil Republicans, and people are going
to see Bill Frist standing across the aisle from him, who doesn't look
rotten or evil.

"The other reason I think the Democrats are losers is that, when they had a
moral issue in front of them, with President Clinton, they denounced him,
but they never acted against him. Indeed, they rallied around him. And I
think that contrast is one that people will remember."

- Political pundit David Broder, "Meet the Press," 12/22/02

Saying What Needed to Be Said

News & Views reader Dolly Bixler of St. Paul, Minnesota, writes: "Your
depictions of Trent Lott, were right on the money! WOW! Seeing them all at
once, was stunning! It's about time that someone had the cojones to say
what's needed to be said for many years." To read this latest "Muth's
Truths" column - "Humpty Dumpty Lott" - go to:

Right Is Right on Race

"Mr. Lott's seeming conversion to the contrary, there's no reason
Republicans should be ashamed of a conservative approach to race relations.
Indeed, it is a position more just and egalitarian than the contorted
calculations and computations promoted by liberals. Simply put, if race no
longer is to be a consideration, then race should truly no longer be a
consideration. As long as there is official ethnic or racial categorization,
there will be no end to perceived disparities - or remedies."

- Washington Times editorial, 12/23/02

White Flight & Liberal Guilt

"Trent Lott had become a diversion, and had to be replaced as the Republican
leader in the Senate because he had begun to preach the liberal agenda, an
agenda that is destructive first of all to the interests of blacks, and thus
destructive to the interests of all of us.

"White liberals like throwing more money at bad inner-city schools because
it relieves their patronizing guilt; the fact that the money will be wasted
and the schools will remain bad is of no personal consequence, because they
can flee with their children to suburban (and mostly white) schools or pay
for expensive private (and mostly white) schools."

Everyone Loves Quotas...Not

"Public-opinion polls consistently find that a majority of every racial
group strongly opposes racially preferential treatment (i.e., racial
discrimination) in college admissions - and for good reason.

"It is immoral; it deepens racial divisions; and, at publicly supported
institutions, it is unconstitutional. Yet, sadly, it is practiced by
administrators at far too many American colleges. The justifications for
this continued racial discrimination vary, including many that are
well-meaning but deeply misguided."

- Edwin Meese & Todd Gaziano of the Heritage Foundation

Keep Your Hands Off Our Hooters

"Several days after Sen. Trent Lott seemed to replace Saddam Hussein as
public enemy No. 1 among all decent and heaven-bound human beings, the
National Organization for Women (stop laughing) jumped into the fray.

"Several days after Trent Lott's self-immolation, NOW suddenly remembered
that not only is Trent Lott a racist but - thank Gaia! - he's a sexist, too.
Apparently, during the same birthday farewell to Strom Thurmond, Trent Lott
made some jokes about Britney Spears and the restaurant chain Hooters, which
features comely waitresses who often appear to have natural flotation
devices under their extra-tight T-shirts.

".'Lott not only insulted millions of African-Americans last week, but he
also offended women,' NOW's President Kim Gandy declared in a prepared, yet
tardy, statement. . . . NOW's tantrum is a perfect example of why feminists
have lost so much clout. Take note: Nobody but NOW seems to care about
Lott's Hooters jokes."

- Columnist Jonah Goldberg

Your Tax $$ At Work: What Makes Women Horny?

"A federally funded study has paid women as much as $75 to watch
pornographic videos to determine 'what types of audiovisual erotica women
find sexually arousing.'

"Women participating in the $147,000 study at Northwestern University -
funded through the federal National Institutes of Child Health and Human
Development (NICHD) - were paid to 'watch a series of commercially available
film clips, some of which will be sexually explicit, while we monitor your
body's sexual arousal,' according to a flyer seeking volunteers for the
study.

"Funding for the research comes from the National Institutes of Health (NIH)
budget, which has more than doubled in the past five years."
