Assassinating Yogi Bear

"Opponents liken bear baiting - which involves leaving anything from
doughnuts to pizza out while hunters lie in wait - to assassination. . . .
'Going out there and putting jelly doughnuts down, and Yogi comes up and
sits there and thinks he's found the mother lode five days in a row - and
then you back-shoot him from a tree?' (Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura) said in
a recent interview. 'That ain't sport. That's an assassination.' "

All Whistle-Blowers Not Created Equal

"I found it very interesting that all of a sudden we're looking at the
'Persons of the Year' and there are three female whistleblowers. I guess
that if you blow the whistle against somebody that Time magazine doesn't
like, it's OK to be a whistleblower. [Time magazine] really, really trashed
me. Their writers were just brutal to me and about me."

- Kathleen Willey, whistleblower and victim of serial groper Bill Clinton,
on WABC radio's "Batchelor & Alexander Show"

Big Brother Is Watching

"If a proposal by an Oregon State task force becomes law, the government
would be able to use satellite equipment to keep track of each driver's
mileage, then tax that driver accordingly to pay for road repairs."

Charity Craps Out

"The Salvation Army will not accept a $100,000 donation from a Florida Lotto
winner because its local leader didn't want to take money associated with
gambling. . . . Maj. Cleo Damon, head of the Salvation Army office in
Naples,...returned the check, which another official had accepted."

Cigarette Nazis Target Outdoor Smoking

"California, long at the cutting edge of anti-smoking legislation, took that
role one step further on New Year's Day with a new law to ban smoking within
25 feet of a playground."

Ambulance Chasers Chasing Docs Out of Business

"While millions of Americans were celebrating the New Year, many
Pennsylvania doctors were dreading the turn of the calendar, knowing they
would have to renew their medical malpractice policies. The policies are so
expensive in Pennsylvania that many doctors are threatening to leave the
state."

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

"Concerns over the rising cost of malpractice insurance reached a boiling
point Wednesday when surgeons at four West Virginia hospitals launched a
strike in protest of the state legislature's inaction. The hospitals had to
alter their trauma operations, diverting some patients to nearby hospitals
or sending them to Ohio and Pennsylvania."

Jackpot Justice Should Go to Victims

"Patients who are victims of medical malpractice should be compensated. But
they, not their lawyers, should get the awards. That's why California now
limits the lawyers' contingency fees, on a sliding scale, so that a
plaintiff's lawyer who hits the medical malpractice 'jackpot' with a jury
doesn't come away with, literally, millions of dollars that should go to
compensate the injured party."

- Maryland state Sen. Andy Harris

Goldwater & the Civil Rights Act

In his own words, why Sen. Barry Goldwater voted against the 1964 civil
rights bill. And get this, it was based on constitutional principles. What
an extremist! Read all about it in the latest "Muth's Truths" column at:

Ambulance Chaser to Chase Dubya

"Democratic Sen. John Edwards (D-NC) said yesterday he would run for
president in 2004... (Edwards) became a successful trial lawyer in Raleigh,
winning personal injury cases against big companies and amassing a fortune
of $14 million."

Frist Aid

"I can't help but notice the contrast of the new Republican Majority Leader
of the Senate, Bill Frist, at an automobile crash site to help the victims
and get them into an ambulance, compared to the man who is trying to be the
top Democrat, John Edwards, a trial lawyer, chasing behind ambulances
looking for clients."

Who's On Frist?

"It is too early to say how (newly elected Senate Majority Leader Bill)
Frist will perform in his new job, but the early assessments of the man are
enough to freeze the blood of Democratic politicians with their eyes on
2008.

"As the Senate's only doctor, and an active one at that [he has spent much
of what spare time he has treating sick children in Africa], he is the
walking embodiment of compassionate conservatism. If that proves to be
combined with the steel will necessary to lead the Senate in enacting
President Bush's agenda, plus a soft-spoken but firm support for basic
conservative principles, Mr. Frist may well have a historic rendezvous with
destiny."

- Columnist William Rusher

Quiet Rumblings on the Frist Front

"The relief felt by Republican senators on Dec. 23 at concluding the
two-week-long Trent Lott nightmare immediately turned to quiet apprehension
when they heard Sen. Bill Frist's impromptu acceptance speech as the new
Senate Republican leader. Had they, some wondered, picked an admirable man
for the wrong job?

"Frist, moments after his election in an unprecedented telephone caucus,
compared the prospect of becoming Senate majority leader with his past
exploits as a heart transplant surgeon.Dr. Frist then suggested he was now
embarking on an even 'heavier' responsibility, implying that the Grand Old
Party needs radical surgery.

"Frist's exaggeration of Republican malaise suggests a steep learning curve
for him as a new party leader. Apart from mastering the backbreaking details
of running the Senate, Frist may have to be disabused of the notion that he
is taking on responsibilities of moral leadership."

- Columnist Robert Novak

Patty Murray's Great Humanitarian

"(H)ere's a news flash for (Washington Democrat Sen. Patty) Murray, the
blame-America-first liberal: (Osama) bin Laden is hardly the selfless
humanitarian she portrayed. To the extent that he has built roads and other
infrastructure, it has been to facilitate the terrorist training and related
activities of his al Qaeda organization. He has built schools to
indoctrinate young Arabs to hate Americans [and Israelis]. And he has built
hospitals so his trained killers remain healthy enough to wage their unholy
war against America and its allies.

"As for bin Laden building day-care facilities, well he certainly hasn't
built many, if any at all. For in Arab nations boasting fundamentalist
governments - like Afghanistan under the Taliban - women aren't allowed in
the workplace, so there's no need for daycare."

Airport Insecurity

For many of us, the stepped-up "security" measures at our nation's airports
are nothing short of a bad joke at our expense. The latest example: A Comair
pilot was busted after security screeners in Harrisburg, PA, discovered a
knife Capt. Rickey L. Mayle said he had forgotten in his carry-on bag.

So let me get this straight: Our now government-employed security screeners
were afraid that the pilot was going to hold a knife to his OWN head and
demand he fly himself into a building?

Sounds like that scene in Mel Brooks' classic movie "Blazing Saddles," when
Rock Ridge's new black sheriff held a gun to his own head to escape a mob of
hostile, dim-witted white townspeople.

The difference, of course, is that Blazing Saddles was an hysterically funny
fiction, while today's ridiculous airport security is decidedly neither.

The Goldwater Doctrine

"I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more
efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote
welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to
repeal them. It is not to inaugurate new programs, but to cancel old ones
that do violence to the Constitution, or that have failed in their purpose,
or that impose on the people an unwarranted financial burden. I will not
attempt to discover whether legislation is 'needed' before I have first
determined whether it is constitutionally permissible. And if I should later
be attacked for neglecting my constituents' interests, I shall reply that I
was informed their main interest is liberty and that in that cause I am
doing the very best I can."
