Ambulance Chasing for Fun & Profit

"Sen. John Edwards, a first-term North Carolina Democrat who amassed a
fortune as a personal injury lawyer, made official yesterday his
long-suspected run for the presidency in 2004. . . . Mr. Edwards, 49,
established a national reputation as a rainmaker by winning several
multimillion-dollar lawsuits while still in his 30s. . . . In 1990, Mr.
Edwards, then 37, became the youngest member inducted into the Inner Circle
of Advocates - a club of the nation's top 100 trial lawyers - for his work
in medical malpractice suits, which composed the bulk of his practice."

- Washington Times, 1/3/02

Amen, Brother

"Continuing to raise taxes to feed the bureaucratic beast can only result in
devouring the means and motivation of our people."

Make Sure Cure Not Worse Than Disease

"American health care is a mess. But nationalizing the system will only
exacerbate medical problems."

A Man of His Convictions

"Ronald Reagan, like Margaret Thatcher, was a conviction politician, someone
who actually believed in something, unlike the typical politician with his
finger in the wind."

Yeah, That About Sums Us Up

"Give the Republicans credit. They know what they stand for. Tax cuts. Guns.
Bombs. Oil. Big business. Old boy networks. Privatization. Plundering the
earth. Pillorying and padlocking the poor. Party-line votes."

- Quote by Derick Z. Jackson in the Boston Globe which earned the author the
runner-up position for columnist Andrew Sullivan's "Begala Award" in his
"Hall of Fame of Idiocy of 2002" awards

Welcome to the "Talibar"

"CIA field officers in particular are known to have a taste for adult
beverages. But where can one find a drink in Afghanistan?

"We have learned the agency runs a secret bar in the Afghan capital of
Kabul. There, weary CIA and other undercover spies and counterterrorism
operatives, including FBI and Drug Enforcement Administration agents, are
known to imbibe a much-deserved whiskey or beer.

"Journalists in the country are not allowed into the watering hole, called
the 'Talibar,' punning on the name of the ousted Muslim Taliban regime. To
reach the bar, one must be invited. Only a select group of U.S. government
officials are extended the courtesy."

Conservatives: The Next Generation

"Sen.-elect Lindsey Graham, South Carolina Republican,...was swept into
office during the 1994 Republican revolution, one of many conservatives who
vowed to enact federal reforms on how the government does business. He
remains committed to outlawing abortion, protecting gun rights, and reducing
federal spending and taxes.

"...He also said he hopes to fill the 'conservative vacuum' left by the
retirements of Republican Sens. Phil Gramm of Texas, Jesse Helms of North
Carolina and Mr. Thurmond. 'It's time for a younger generation of
conservatives to step up to the plate. I would like to do that but to be
thought of as a reformer,' Mr. Graham said."

Toward a More Color-Blind Society

"Sometime in the coming year, the U. S. Supreme Court will reconsider the
constitutionality of racial discrimination in college admissions, a matter
addressed in the Bakke decision but not resolved. . . . (O)pinions and
editorials from each side will be heard. On the one hand will be rational
arguments of constitutional principle: On the other will be emotional pleas
for judicial deference to social justice. Get ready for some preposterous
and wholly gratuitous twaddle.

"...The time nears when our Supreme Court will decide whether or not we will
tolerate racial discrimination in the pursuit of diversity on campus. Tell
anyone who will listen that we cannot indulge such misguided frolic. Our law
recognizes but one class of citizen, a class singularly undifferentiated by
race. That is the American commonality. It is what defines us."

- Prof. James Metcalf of George Mason University

Will WH Back Equal Justice Under Law?

"Deep into the outback is where the White House apparently wishes a pair of
University of Michigan affirmative action cases would disappear as fast as
possible. Yet like it or not, the two Michigan cases are headed to the U.S.
Supreme Court, which is scheduled to hear oral argument in March. The
immediate question is what the Department of Justice will say in a
friend-of-the-court brief due by midmonth.

"It would be virtually unprecedented for an administration to keep silent on
such an important case, and yet that's precisely what prominent White House
officials would like to do. We're told that White House counsel Alberto
Gonzales is afraid that if the administration comes down against racial
quotas, he won't get the smooth Senate passage he wants if he is nominated
to the Supreme Court to fill any opening later this year.

"We also hear that Colin Powell, moonlighting as attorney general, has
weighed in with his well-known views in favor of racial preferences. And in
the wake of the Trent Lott firestorm, the last thing some White House
politicos want is a public fight over another racially charged issue.

"Sorry, but there is this nettlesome principle of equal opportunity under
the law at stake here."

- Wall Street Journal editorial, 1/2/03

Silence On Race Case Not Golden

"January 16 is a day that will make or break the Bush administration - and
the date has nothing to do with troop movements, weapons inspections or
Iraq. Instead, it marks the deadline by which the Justice Department must
decide whether to file a brief in a landmark affirmative action case about
admissions at the University of Michigan that will come before the Supreme
Court in the spring.

"What the administration chooses to do - the likely choices being either
taking a stand opposing race-based admissions, or taking no stand - will
reveal more than just the outcome of a power struggle within White House
circles. Facing a choice of near-epic design, George W. Bush must decide
between setting off an electrifying jolt of principle by opposing
affirmative action, or yielding to heavy political pressure to say nothing
combustible - particularly now, presidential aides say, in the aftermath of
the Trent Lott firestorm.

"Mr. Bush's decision will be nothing less than a monument to his
presidency."

- Columnist Diana West

The Shrinking Left-Wing Conspiracy

"The Fox News Channel has kept both mission and message clear, with sterling
results. Buoyed by a staunch alliance with viewers, Fox has seen its
audience grow by 36 percent in 2002, according to a final tally by Nielsen
on Tuesday. . . . Ratings at Fox's two chief rivals (CNN and MSNBC) fell 8
percent and 24 percent respectively."

- "On Media," Washington Times, 1/3/03

Fair & Balanced Scares Democrats

"The Democrats are particularly frightened that their friends at CNN, MSNBC
and the other networks are being outgunned by Fox News Channel, which calls
itself 'fair and balanced.' Indeed, the new Nielsen ratings show that Fox
News is hot, hot and the others are not, not. 'Fair and balanced' is what
frightens the Dems. They're addicted to media that's fairer to some than to
others. More Phil Donahue, anyone?"

- Wesley Pruden, "Pruden On Politics," 1/3/03

The Goldwater Doctrine

"I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more
efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote
welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to
repeal them. It is not to inaugurate new programs, but to cancel old ones
that do violence to the Constitution, or that have failed in their purpose,
or that impose on the people an unwarranted financial burden. I will not
attempt to discover whether legislation is 'needed' before I have first
determined whether it is constitutionally permissible. And if I should later
be attacked for neglecting my constituents' interests, I shall reply that I
was informed their main interest is liberty and that in that cause I am
doing the very best I can."
