************************************ What's This Say About the REST of the Field? "The Rev. Al Sharpton announced yesterday that he will form a presidential exploratory committee, saying he is probably more qualified than any other Democrat seeking the White House." - "Around the Nation," Washington Times, 1/4/02 ********************************** Go Forth and e-Multiply If you know someone who might like to receive News & Views, you can sign 'em up at: http://www.chuckmuth.com. ********************************** Right Rightly Worried About Wrong Nominations "(T)he hurdles to be jumped over in the Senate by Mr. Bush's Supreme Court nominees aren't only those placed by Democrats. Millions of Mr. Bush's own supporters will abandon him if he replaces (likely retiree) Chief Justice William Rehnquist with someone more liberal. "...Mr. Bush was elected in 2000 and successful in campaigning for Republican Senate candidates in 2002 largely because of the judicial issue, and his constituency will leave him if he betrays them. . . . Conservatives voted for Mr. Bush because he campaigned praising Justices Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas, and a lesser nomination would have seismic consequences." - Columnist Phyllis Schlafly ************************************* Send in the Clones "It doesn't exactly add to the credibility of this latest, oh-so-scientific announcement - a Clone is born - that it should come from someone who (a) believes human life was brought to Earth by extraterrestrials and (b) is French." - Columnist Paul Greenberg ************************************ Where's NOW When Someone Actually Needs 'Em? "A businesswoman who accused three men of gang rape has been arrested in the Arab emirate of Dubai and faces trial on charges of adultery. Touria Tiouli, 39, from Limoges, France, has had her passport confiscated and cannot leave Dubai after being charged under the emirate's Shariah law, according to her statement released by her friends back home. . . . She could face up to 18 months in prison. None of the men has been charged. Mrs. Tiouli was held in prison for five days and has since been staying at a hotel." - London Daily Telegraph ************************************** Worshipping Diversity "Diversity worship and multiculturalism are currency and cause for celebration at just about any college. If one is black, brown, yellow or white, the prevailing thought is that he should take pride and celebrate that fact even though...he had nothing to do with it. The multiculturalists and diversity crowd see race as an achievement. In my book, race might be an achievement, worthy of considerable celebration, only if a person was born white and through his effort and diligence became black." - Columnist Walter Williams ************************************* Celebrating Unity "We are not a particular race of people united by a common ethnic heritage, but a collection of all different races, colors and ethnicities bonded by a social compact that ensures we are all equals before God and under the law. It is not our diversity we should celebrate, but our unity." - Columnist David Limbaugh ************************************* Showdown on Affirmative Action "Coming up quickly...is the final showdown on affirmative action. The Supreme Court will rule in the matter of the University of Michigan's Law School's affirmative-action program. The objective is to decide whether equal rights extend equally to applicants to law school who aren't members of racial minorities. "One senses that the Republican leadership is holding back in arguing the case for genuine equal rights because of the avalanche triggered by Mr. Lott 's indiscretion. We will need to watch carefully how the Bush administration comports itself on the University of Michigan question. Will the Justice Department file an amicus brief defending the right course?" - Columnist William F. Buckley Jr. ************************************ Sometimes It's Better to Switch Than Fight AT&T, MCI and Sprint are all raising or considering raising their already-too-high long distance rates. Ferguson *********************************** Goldwater & the Civil Rights Act In his own words, why Sen. Barry Goldwater voted against the 1964 civil rights bill. And get this, it was based on constitutional principles. What an extremist! Read all about it in the latest "Muth's Truths" column at: http://chuckmuth.com/muthstruths.htm ************************************* Judge Not By the Color of One's Skin "Racial discriminations imposed by law, or having the sanction or support of government, inevitably tend to undermine the foundations of a society dedicated to freedom, justice, and equality. The proposition that all men are created equal is not mere rhetoric. It implies a rule of law---an indispensable condition to a civilized society---under which all men stand equal and alike in the rights and opportunities secured to them by their government. "Under the Constitution, every agency of government, national and local, legislative, executive, and judicial, must treat each of our people as an AMERICAN, and not as some member of a particular group classified on the basis of race or some other constitutional irrelevancy. The color of a man's skin---like his religious beliefs, or his political attachments, or the country from which he or his ancestors came to the United States---does not diminish or alter his legal status or constitutional rights." - From the Amicus Curiae brief filed by the federal government in Brown v. Bd. of Education ************************************* Essence of America: Equal Under Law "In a much more significant sense, the (racial preferences in admissions at the University of Michigan) case before the (Supreme) Court is not about how to 'create diversity,' or whether diversity is an acceptable excuse to discriminate; it is about how to define a nation. If America cannot guarantee its citizens the right to be treated as equals by their government, regardless of their skin color or where their ancestors came from, then our Declaration of Independence, our Constitution, our statutes, and all that we say about the nation being a 'land of opportunity, liberty and justice' are all lies." - Ward Connerly, chairman, American Civil Rights Institute ************************************ Gun Hysteria in the Big Apple "Criminals in New York City are increasingly turning to children's toy guns as their weapon of choice, according to some members of the city council, who want their colleagues to consider banning the sale of plastic pistols altogether. . . . Under current law, signed in 1998, New York City permits the sale of brightly colored toy guns so long as they are constructed entirely of transparent materials. But two city council members claim the existing legislation does not prevent criminals from 'staining' or 'taping' the toy guns black to make them appear realistic." - CNSNews.com, 1/3/03 *********************************** Disorder in the Courts "A Westmoreland County woman wants a jury to award her $90 million-plus because she was examined with a defective medical instrument," reports the Pittsburgh Gazette on January 2. "Anne Stanley, of Loyalhanna, claims she had to cope with the fear of not knowing whether she had been infected with a potentially deadly bacteria after a defective bronchoscope was used twice to evaluate a spot in one of her lungs." Note that Ms. Stanley isn't claiming she has actually been infected with deadly bacteria by a defective medical instrument; only that she "had to cope with the fear" that she *might* become infected. For that, this gold-digger and her ambulance chasing lawyer (Hello, Sen. John Edwards!) want $90 MILLION! And you wonder why health costs and medical malpractice rates are so high? *********************************** The Goldwater Doctrine "I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to repeal them. It is not to inaugurate new programs, but to cancel old ones that do violence to the Constitution, or that have failed in their purpose, or that impose on the people an unwarranted financial burden. I will not attempt to discover whether legislation is 'needed' before I have first determined whether it is constitutionally permissible. And if I should later be attacked for neglecting my constituents' interests, I shall reply that I was informed their main interest is liberty and that in that cause I am doing the very best I can." - Barry Goldwater, "The Conscience of a Conservative" [ To help promote the "Goldwater Doctrine" in public policy and government, join the Goldwater Club by going to: http://chuckmuth.com/goldwater.htm ] ********************************* ********************************* Published by The Goldwater Club Chuck Muth Editor/Publisher P.O.
