A Trio of Literary Treats...

* From William F. Buckley: A rollicking -- and revealing -- novel about
the early days of the conservative movement. According to Sam Tanenhaus,
author of Whittaker Chambers: A Biography, GETTING IT RIGHT is a grand read:
a classy piece of political-historical fiction. But it's also a major
contribution to the historiography of postwar American conservatism.
Buckley has captured the movement at a peak moment of crisis, the early
1960s, when it was beset by two symmetrical extremist forces, depicted
vividly here in the characters of Robert Welch and Ayn Rand-one the voice of
conspiratorial anti-Communism, the other the strident oracle of
authoritarian 'freedom.' What will come as a surprise to readers, almost a
shock, is how he has delineated the complex ways in which Randism and
Birchism formed an unintended interlocking collaboration which looked for a
time as if it might pitch the Right into permanent oblivion; instead the
crisis was met and mastered into a mature, nuanced conservative movement.
Most remarkably, Buckley's true story unfolds without a hint of didacticism
or triumphalism or self-serving revisionism. On the contrary, he has
transformed it into high, pulsating drama. A singular addition to a
glittering oeuvre.

* How big-time lawyers are fast becoming a fourth branch of government -
and what you can do to stop them. Unelected and unaccountable, elite
litigators are waging lucrative courtroom assaults on industries from "big
tobacco" to gun manufacturers. These court battles do much more than line
the pockets of the lawyers and their clients: each one invents a forest of
new laws and regulations that go over the heads of elected legislators and
impose the lawyerly elite's will directly on the American people. Now, in
THE RULE OF LAWYERS: How the New Litigation Elite Threatens America's Rule
of Law, Walter K. Olson takes on these class-action lawyers. He pierces thei
r self-serving pretensions about serving the public interest and shows you
just how much they have already eroded the delicate balance of our
legislative and judicial systems.

* Discover the Christian significance of J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings
trilogy. Hollywood's film version of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and the
accompanying proliferation of Rings-related paraphernalia, has once again
brought the work of J.R.R. Tolkien to a popular audience. Yet, for most
readers and viewers, the underlying -- and deeply Christian -- meaning of
Middle-earth has remained obscure. Now, Bradley Birzer, a professor of
history at Hillsdale College, has remedied that with this fresh, thorough
and accessible treatment of the religious vision permeating Tolkien's
influential works.
