McCigarettes

"A Federal judge threw out the lawsuit against McDonalds, saying that
(although there was never a written warning on the package), the plaintiffs
had to know they were doing something that would be unhealthy. Hmm, why
didn't somebody utilize the same common sense against the tobacco companies,
which DID have warning labels? Go figure."

Born-Again Peaceniks

"To hear Democratic senators carping about President Bush's Iraq policy,
you'd almost think space aliens from had taken over their brains. . . . It's
no surprise that some Democrats are peaceniks; when the Senate voted last to
declare war on Iraq, after all, 21 Democrats cast 'no' votes. But wait a
second. Among the 29 Democrats voting 'yes' were Biden, Daschle, Feinstein
and Kerry. They are now in the position of opposing a war that they voted
for."

- James Taranto, Best of the Web, 1/23/03

Yankee Imperialism

"It is so easy for the America-bashers to slander this nation. But I ask
you to consider when this country - the world's only superpower, no less -
has used its superior forces to steal other nations' resources.

"Are we talking about the nation that spent $13 billion ($73 billion in 1990
dollars) through the Marshall Plan following World War II to help rebuild
war-torn Europe, including our vanquished enemies? Are we talking about the
nation that militarily skunked Saddam Hussein and let him and his oil off
the hook in 1991? Are we talking about the nation that sent CARE packages
to Afghanistan while stripping its rogue Taliban regime from power? Are we
talking about the nation that always pays its own way and generously assists
other peoples throughout the world?"

- Columnist David Limbaugh

Chrysler Boycott Gaining Steam

"Complaints about DaimlerChrysler continued to grow Wednesday as the company
again refused to retract a top executive's comment that some conservatives
had a 'myopic view of the world.' . . . Several consumers contacted by
CNSNews.com said they were expressing their dismay with the company by
boycotting DaimlerChrysler vehicles, calling the incident enough of an
incentive to stop buying the company's products."

Hey, Big Spenders

"Senate Republicans are responding to Democrats' repeated attempts to add
billions of dollars in additional spending to the omnibus 2003
appropriations bill by asking how Democrats, who say the government can't
afford to cut taxes, believe it can afford so much new spending. . . .
Senate Republicans, who at the beginning of January thought they would be
long finished by now with passing 11 of 13 federal spending bills left over
from last year, grew increasingly frustrated with the Democrats'
amendments - which numbered 245 yesterday."

- Washington Times, 1/23/03

But Who Will Write His Speeches This Time?

"There are already enough Democrats jockeying for their party's 2004
presidential nomination to make 1988's selection of the 'seven dwarves' look
like a small, tight field. But the current group of eight or nine could get
even wilder with the addition of Sen. Joseph Biden of Delaware. . . . .
(Chicago) Sun-Times columnist Michael Sneed reports that the senator met
privately with former President Bill Clinton in New York recently to discuss
the possibility of entering the race."

- Columnist Jim Geraghty, National Review Online

Bush Right, Left Wrong

"Democrats have been pillorying President Bush for opposing racial
preferences in college admittance, but two major new polls show the public
is on Mr. Bush's side. . . . (A) Time magazine poll of 1,010 adults
conducted Jan. 15-16 shows 54 percent disapproved of programs that give
racial preferences to minority applicants at colleges and universities,
while 39 percent approved. And in a Jan. 16-17 Newsweek poll, more than
two-thirds of Americans opposed racial preferences in college admissions."

- Ralph Hallow, Washington Times, 1/23/03

Bush Will Sign Barbarism Ban

"President Bush yesterday vowed to sign legislation banning partial-birth
abortion...as Senate Republicans declared they would bring up the issue as
early as next month. . . . The House has passed a ban on partial-birth
abortion four times - in 1995, 1997, 2000 and 2002. The Senate also
approved the legislation twice, but President Clinton vetoed it each time.
In both cases, the House voted to override the veto, but the Senate did
 not."

- Washington Times, 1/23/03

Sucking Up to Al

"Al Sharpton and Washington, D.C., gave the Democratic Party real headaches
this week. Mr. Sharpton, the demagogic New York minister, filed his papers
as a presidential candidate and then shared equal billing at a dinner
celebrating the 30th anniversary of Roe v. Wade. The other five Democratic
candidates tiptoed around him in their remarks as if they were navigating a
minefield. No one wants to be accused of giving Mr. Sharpton an excuse to
say he was 'dissed.'"

What's Up Doc?

"Some (Mississippi) Gulf Coast surgeons will begin monthlong leaves of
absence next week to protest the high cost of malpractice insurance.
Surgeons say reforms lawmakers passed last fall haven't helped. The
walkouts will virtually shut down surgery at Memorial and Garden Park
hospitals and Hancock and Gulf Coast medical centers."

- "American Scene," Washington Times, 1/23/03

Med-Mal Crisis

"Since July, the (medical malpractice lawsuit) crisis has, among other
things, threatened the financial existence of emergency trauma centers in
Nevada, forced hospitals in northern West Virginia to rush emergency
patients out of state for treatment and jeopardized the ability of pregnant
women in rural Mississippi to find obstetricians. . . . (W)ith the powerful
trial-lawyer lobbying groups adamantly opposed to any limits on the
seven-figure awards (and more)...the problem is sure to grow worse before it
gets any better.

"...In July, the Senate defeated by a 57-42 vote a watered-down tort-reform
amendment introduced by Sen. Mitch McConnell, Kentucky Republican. Six
Republican senators (Richard Shelby of Alabama, Mike Crapo of Idaho, Gordon
Smith of Oregon, Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania, Fred Thompson of Tennessee
and George Allen of Virginia) voted against the McConnell amendment."
