Dirtbags Bite the Dust

"A Far North Dallas man who shot and killed two would-be burglars Thursday
morning probably will not face charges, according to Dallas police and legal
experts.

"About 9 a.m. Thursday, the 29-year-old man was at home with his wife and
three young children when a man knocked on the side door and asked for
someone the resident did not know, police said.

"One or both suspects then forced their way into the apartment, shooting the
resident once in the arm, police said. The resident retreated to his
bedroom, retrieved a gun, and a shootout ensued in the living room on Knoll
Trail Drive near the Dallas North Tollway, police said."

Franco-German Obstruction

"The Germans, with French connivance, are determined to buy time for Saddam
Hussein. . . . All the Anglo-American allies actually need from France and
Germany is for them to get out of the way. . . . The president can blame his
State Department for this fine mess. Colin Powell persuaded him to put the
nation's interests in the hands of the United Nations Security Council, and
the secretary of state and the president should have known, as the rest of
the world could have told them, that the cooks at the U.N. can't produce a
decent meal because they can't stand the heat of the kitchen. They only know
how to spit in someone else's soup."

RINO Alert

"Indications late Thursday afternoon that Sen. Lincoln Chafee, R-R.I., would
assume the chairmanship of the Senate subcommittee on Near Eastern and South
Asian Affairs set off a flurry of activity on Capitol Hill. According to at
least one source familiar with events as they unfolded, Chafee offered to
take the gavel after Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb., passed it up.

"Both men, however, voted against the resolution giving President George W.
Bush the authority to use all necessary means to disarm Iraq. Some
administration allies are reportedly quite concerned that either man could
use the post as a platform to subtly or openly undermine the
administration's Gulf War effort -- even after the shooting starts, if
 ever."

Wheel of Conservative Fortune

"Fox News Channel...announced Wednesday that it has hired 'Wheel of Fortune'
host Pat Sajak to host a new Sunday talk show in the spring. . . . The
benign, Emmy Award-winning Mr. Sajak...has publicly scolded talk-show host
Rosie O'Donnell for sharing her sexual preferences with the public ('Who
cares?'), rebuked actor Alec Baldwin for criticizing President Bush and
chided celebrities for nervy intrusions on politics."

Next on Springer.

"Jerry Springer, the onetime Cincinnati mayor turned trashy daytime
talk-show host, says he's mulling a return to politics, possibly a run for
Republican George Voinovich's Senate seat in 2004. 'In his speech, Springer
castigated President Bush for squandering America's goodwill around the
world,' the Columbus Dispatch reports. Can anyone imagine a more effective
goodwill ambassador than Jerry Springer?"

Fiscal Facts

The Tax Foundation is distributing a report on the President's economic
package which points out that the number of tax filers who will pay ZERO in
taxes jumps to almost 40 million people. The foundation concludes with what
should be obvious to anyone not drinking water from the Potomac River: "It
is impossible to give income tax relief to people who do not pay income
taxes." And thanks to the president, the number of such people will grow by
an additional 3 million families. So, Madame Hillary, why are the "rich"
getting a tax cut? Because the "rich" are the ones paying the taxes. Duh.

If Only More GOPers Spoke Like This

"We now have the biggest, most expensive federal government in history.
Federal employees are thicker than maggots on a rotting carcass. So, why not
start by abolishing vacant positions in every department except Defense and
Homeland Security. Congress could set the example by cutting our own staff
to show that we are willing to stop feeding the hungry beast.

".(W)e need that tax-cutting Texan to also become a budget-cutting
president. We need more members of Congress to decide that now is the time
to cut taxes and at the same time tighten our belt. It's simple: Collect
fewer dollars; spend fewer dollars."

week

Stopping Junk Lawsuits

Victor Schwartz of the American Tort Reform Association says that GOP
control of both houses of Congress, plus having a Republican in the White
House, means the "right climate" exists to pass some meaningful tort reform
measures this year, but that "it is hard to climb hills sprayed with
plaintiff lawyer Teflon."

Just Regular Folks

Author Walter Olson points out the chutzpah of some class-action lawyers by
quoting in his new book one such lawyer who says, "Other than airplanes and
helicopters, I don't have a flamboyant lifestyle at all." Sort of like
saying, "Other than that Mrs. Lincoln, how did you like the play?" Geez.

Good Grace, Reaganism Is Alive & Well!

"Our budget is a mess. There is a disconnection between the promises of
government and our ability to pay for those promises. I propose beginning
to close that gap by not offering the normal state of the state speech -
typically a laundry list of new programs regardless of the budget capacity
to support them. . . . Therefore let me make this, my first state of the
state, one that focuses not on more money for programs but on the root
causes.

"...I'd say first and fundamentally, we are going to have to do what small
business does every day -tighten our belts and look closely at priorities.
If every agency and department finds just one function they can do without,
we can go a long way toward closing the budget divide before us.

"...Ronald Reagan is a man many of us in this room admire, and I would like
to steal an idea of his that was an effective tool in the fight against
waste and duplication in government - the Grace Commission. Some of the
brightest minds in the business world took an exhaustive look at the
workings of government and did indeed find things that could be done better.
We need to do this in South Carolina and I will ask for this commission to
begin its work immediately after Memorial Day."

- South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford in his first state-of-the-state address,
1/22/03. There are a LOT of other great ideas for running a smaller,
more-responsive government in Gov. Sanford's address. To read the full

The Goldwater Doctrine

"I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more
efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote
welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to
repeal them. It is not to inaugurate new programs, but to cancel old ones
that do violence to the Constitution, or that have failed in their purpose,
or that impose on the people an unwarranted financial burden. I will not
attempt to discover whether legislation is 'needed' before I have first
determined whether it is constitutionally permissible. And if I should later
be attacked for neglecting my constituents' interests, I shall reply that I
was informed their main interest is liberty and that in that cause I am
doing the very best I can."
