Yeah, That Sounds About Right

"Washington is a Hollywood for ugly people. Hollywood is a Washington for
the simpleminded."

Marine Rules for a Gunfight

"With U.S. military forces ready for war with Iraq, troops around the nation
are preparing to ship out for the Middle East. The Marines have taken a
lighter look at some rules of ground combat, and we obtained a copy of them.

"Among the 24 rules are such gems as, No. 1: 'Bring a gun. Preferably, bring
at least two guns. Bring all of your friends who have guns,' and, No. 2,
'Anything worth shooting is worth shooting twice. Ammo is cheap. Life is
expensive.'

"Rule No. 7 is: 'In 10 years nobody will remember the details of caliber,
stance, or tactics. They will only remember who lived.' And No. 8: 'If you
are not shooting, you should be communicating, reloading and running.'

"Rule No. 10 addresses a worst-case scenario: 'Someday someone may kill you
with your own gun, but they should have to beat you to death with it because
it is empty.' And No. 11: 'Always cheat; always win. The only unfair fight
is the one you lose.'"

Picking on Marine Wives

"Several of my fellow Marine wives . . . have experienced verbal and
physical abuse in the past few weeks from so-called 'peace protesters.' One
woman was told from another car at a stoplight that her husband was a baby
killer, and that they hoped he would die. Another, and her young son, were
yelled at and manhandled by a group of protesters as they were passing
through the area. Why did this happen? Because the wives either had a
Marine Corps sticker on the car or a Marine Corps shirt on."

- Marion Colston, Chicago Tribune, 2/6/03

Who Needs the French?

"Going to war without France is like going deer hunting without an
accordion."

this on to News & Views over the past couple of days

All Aboooaaaard!

"(President Bush) told the clowns, cowards and freeloaders at the United
Nations yesterday to climb aboard the train or risk having to chase it down
the tracks. 'The game is over,' he declared. 'Saddam Hussein will be
stopped.'

"...[France's] Jacques Chirac, huffing and puffing, will soon enough lead
the
stragglers after George W.'s train, popping a sweat and risking cardiac
arrest, desperate to catch the caboose. [Russia's] Vladimir Putin and the
Chinese cohort will be right behind, eager not to miss whatever vodka
martinis and pork dumplings that may be served aboard. [Germany's] Gerhard
Schroeder can allay the fears of the rest of us by staying off the train
(we've seen enough of blitzkrieg for the next thousand years or so), but
someone might throw him a sausage from the dining car leftovers."

Inspection Collection

"Speaking to the U.N. Security Council on Wednesday, Secretary of State
Colin Powell made so strong a case that Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein is in
material breach of U.N. resolutions that only the duped, the dumb and the
desperate could ignore it. Which is what the French ambassador did, calling
for three times the number of inspectors currently in the country."

What Did You Do in the War, Monsieur

"War, when it comes, will marginalize France and Germany if they are not
part of that coalition, and this is what infuriates M. Chirac and Herr
Schroeder. More infuriating still, to M. Chirac, is the knowledge that
President Bush and the Americans don't really need the French to accomplish
the West's aims. The French are perfectly free to stay under the bed when
the shooting starts. They've been there before."

- Wesley Pruden, Pruden On Politics, 2/7/03

It's Dj Vu All Over Again

"Political habits sometimes repeat themselves. Twenty years ago, Democrats
confronted a conservative Republican president in Congress--and in
preliminary sparring before the 1984 presidential campaign--by moving to the
left on war, taxes, social issues, and race. Today, facing another
conservative Republican in the White House, they're doing the same. The
shift didn't work in the 1980s and isn't likely to help Democrats now."

- The Weekly Standard's Fred Barnes in a Wall Street Journal column, 2/7/03

Liberals Ready to Slice-and-Dice Hispanic

"On Wednesday the full Senate began a debate over the nomination of Miguel
Estrada to be a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the D.C.
Circuit. The first Hispanic nominated for a seat on that particular court,
he has attracted a lot of interest -- not all of it good. A number of
liberal special interest groups have come out strongly against his
nomination and are putting pressure on Senate Democrats to keep him from
being confirmed. Sources inside the Senate expected the Democrats to launch
a filibuster against Estrada on Tuesday."

- Peter Roff, UPI's Capital Comment, 2/6/03

The Case Against Estrada

"Tell me one thing they can show against him, other than they think he's a
conservative Republican who might be pro-life."

- Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch (R) on Democrat opposition to the nomination of
Miguel Estrada to the D.C. Circuit Court, Washington Times, 2/6/03

Filibuster Estrada? Bring It On!

"If Democrats want to filibuster (the Estrada nomination), Republicans
should keep the debate going, for weeks if need be. Put Mr. Estrada on the
talk shows, and have Mr. Bush go on Univision to talk about the Senate
tactics. Democrats who refuse even to give Mr. Estrada a confirmation vote
should be made to pay a political price. If Republicans let Democrats get
away with this abuse of the system now, it will happen again and again."

- Wall Street Journal editorial

Tort Shorts

"The sharks are running wild in the Wolverine State. Brian Delekta, a high
school senior in Memphis, Mich., is suing his school, claiming he wuz robbed
because he received an A instead of an A-plus last year, the Associated
Press reports. He wants to 'bolster his chance at becoming valedictorian.'
Meanwhile, the Macomb Daily reports Ann Laerzio of Clinton Township, Mich.,
is demanding half a million dollars from a nail salon, where a beautician
allegedly 'nicked her finger with cuticle scissors.'"

Total Recall

"If the taxpayer group People's Advocate has its way the next recall
initiative to face Californians will target (Democrat) Gov. Gray Davis, who
the group says has mismanaged the state's budget, which now has a deficit
larger than that of all other states combined.

"...Mike Schroeder, the Republican lawyer who led the two successful recalls
of legislators in 1995, says the Davis recall could have profound political
implications even if it fails. 'It would put the governor and Legislature on
notice that the voters are angry about having to pay for their mistakes.' .
. . Ward Connerly, author of a 1996 initiative banning racial preferences,
says such an effort would 'energize the dispirited and bickering grass roots
of the conservative movement in California.'

"Shawn Steel, the Republican Party's state chairman, agrees. 'People feel so
powerless in this budget crisis right now that the recall is the only
vehicle they have to express their dissatisfaction with government.' When
he mentioned the recall on the San Francisco talk radio program hosted by
Lee Rodgers and Melanie Morgan, the phone lines lit up immediately. In the
past, the two hosts have often provided the spark for statewide initiative
campaigns, and the Davis recall looks like one they won't tire of easily.
Over one million Californians listen to local conservative talk radio every
day, and that doesn't count national hosts such as Rush Limbaugh and Sean
Hannity."

The Goldwater Doctrine

"I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more
efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote
welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to
repeal them. It is not to inaugurate new programs, but to cancel old ones
that do violence to the Constitution, or that have failed in their purpose,
or that impose on the people an unwarranted financial burden. I will not
attempt to discover whether legislation is 'needed' before I have first
determined whether it is constitutionally permissible. And if I should later
be attacked for neglecting my constituents' interests, I shall reply that I
was informed their main interest is liberty and that in that cause I am
doing the very best I can."
