That Old Dutch Wisdom

"It has been said that, when Ronald Reagan was governor of California,
someone told him that admitting students to the University of California on
individual performance alone could mean that all the students at Berkeley
might be Asian Americans. 'So what?' was his response. Like many other
remarks by Mr. Reagan, it cut through mountains of nonsense and knocked over
numerous houses of cards that keep the intelligentsia wringing their hands."

Paid In Full

"The time for the U.N.'s Inspector Clouseaus and Mister Magoos has almost
run out. It is time to act. . . . God bless the French, someone once said,
they're always there when they need us. Well, Lafayette, we have arrived
twice this past century to rescue Europe, and that debt has been paid in
full. With the blood of our finest. This country is not prepared to pay for
Europe's follies a third time, not after September 11."

Dear Dad:

A funny thing happened to me yesterday at Camp Bondsteel (Bosnia): A French
army officer walked up to me in the PX, and told me he thought we Americans
were a bunch of cowboys and were going to provoke a war in Iraq. He said if
such a thing happens, we wouldn't be able to count on the support of France.

I told him that it didn't surprise me. Since we had come to France's rescue
in World War I, World War II, Vietnam, and the Cold War, their ingratitude
and jealousy was due to surface again at some point in the near future
anyway.

He began to get belligerent at that point, and I told him if he would like
to, I would meet him outside in front of the Burger King and whip his ass in
front of the entire Multi-National Brigade East, thus demonstrating that
even the smallest American had more fight in him than the average Frenchman.

He called me a barbarian cowboy and walked away in a huff. With friends
like these, who needs enemies? Dad, tell Mom I love her.

Your loving daughter,

Mary Beth Johnson, Lt. Col., USMC

Naked (Non)Aggression

"Protesters are trying a nude way to stir interest in the anti-war movement.
. . . Just after dawn yesterday, roughly 30 women scurried into the heart of
(New York's) Central Park, splitting up into groups to avoid arousing police
suspicion. Once they reached their destination, the Bethesda Fountain, they
displayed their deep misgivings about the war (with Iraq) by disrobing amid
a steady snowfall."

Dancing on Astronauts' Graves

"Deposed from his mosque because of his anti-Western rhetoric, cleric Abu
Hamza al-Masri took his radical brand of Islam to the streets yesterday and
told worshippers President Bush is a curse to his people and the planet.
The Egyptian-born activist, who is wanted in Yemen on terrorism charges,
also said the space shuttle disaster was an alarming sign from Allah that
America will face fresh calamities.

"...According to British tabloid reports, al-Masri 'gloated' over the
Columbia crash and the death of its crew of seven on Feb. 1. 'It was a
trinity of evil against Muslims, because [the shuttle] contained Americans,
an Israeli and a Hindu,' he was quoted as saying."

Snow White(water) Leads Pack of Dwarfs

"A new poll says Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton could sweep the entire field of
Democratic presidential candidates if she wanted to challenge President Bush
in 2004 - fueling talk she's leaving the door open to doing just that.

"Clinton would be the choice of 42 percent of Democrats - a nearly 3-1
margin over second-place Sen. Joe Lieberman (D-Conn.), who got 15 percent.
Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) and Rep. Dick Gephardt (D-Mo.) each had 11 percent
and all others were in single digits."

Hey, Big Spenders

"Whatever happened to the GOP's crusade against bloated government?
President Bush's $2.25 trillion budget released Monday is almost 30 percent
larger than the budget he inherited three years ago. Since the Republicans
took over Congress in 1995, the budget has grown by 50 percent. If the
Republicans are fighting a war against big spenders, the big spenders are
winning."

NASA's Funding

"According to the government accounting office, waste and fraud in the
federal budget is larger than NASA's budget. In May of last year, the Office
of Management and Budget announced that the federal government had doled out
$20 billion in health, housing and food benefits to people not entitled to
them. Erroneous Medicare payments alone were almost the size of NASA's
budget.

"When it comes to waste, the GAO barely scratches the surface. The federal
education budget is several times larger than NASA's. What's to show for it?
According to a recently released report, a 1955 high-school education is the
equivalent of a university education today."

Good Lord

"A Vietnam combat veteran was fired from his job as an honor guardsman at a
New Jersey veterans cemetery after he said the phrase 'God bless you and
this family' during a burial service last fall. Patrick Cubbage, 54, of
Philadelphia, says his supervisor told him not to offer the religious
blessing because it might offend families who are not Christian. . . . 'We'
re one nation under God,' Mr. Cubbage said. 'You're going to tell me
millions and millions of people can't have God present with them because one
person might be offended? That's ludicrous.'"

Time to Support Pro-Choice...in Education

"Teacher unions exert a stranglehold over the Democratic Party, which in
turn does the unions bidding when it comes to education policy. But if
children in the District (of Columbia) and other failing schools systems
around the country are to have any chance of succeeding, they have to be
allowed to abandon schools that don't teach, and that means giving school
vouchers to poor parents so they can choose better schools for their
children."

Making Quotas Obsolete

"Anyone who is serious about wanting to help minority young people must know
that the place to start is at . . . (the) beginning in the earliest grades
teaching reading, math and other mental skills on which their future
depends. But that would mean clashing with the teachers unions and their
own busybody agenda of propaganda and psychological manipulation in the
classrooms. The path of least resistance is to give minority youngsters a
lousy education and then admit them to college by quotas. With a decent
education, they wouldn't need the quotas."

The Goldwater Doctrine

"I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more
efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote
welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to
repeal them. It is not to inaugurate new programs, but to cancel old ones
that do violence to the Constitution, or that have failed in their purpose,
or that impose on the people an unwarranted financial burden. I will not
attempt to discover whether legislation is 'needed' before I have first
determined whether it is constitutionally permissible. And if I should later
be attacked for neglecting my constituents' interests, I shall reply that I
was informed their main interest is liberty and that in that cause I am
doing the very best I can."
