Yeah, He's a Real Peach

Writing at Salon.com, Jake Tapper recounts the fawning admiration that
left-wing film director Oliver Stone has for brutal Cuban dictator Fidel
Castro. When asked what he thought of Castro at the premiere of his
documentary titled "Comandante," Stone gushed, "I thought (Castro) was warm
and bright. He's a very driven man, a very moral man. He's very concerned
about his country. He's selfless in that way."

Warm? Moral? Selfless? Only in a world where liberals don't even know
what "is" is.

Democrats Fiddle While World Burns

"The country is at Orange Alert. People are stockpiling water and duct
tape. Who knows if we're going to war in two weeks, and (Democrats are)
going to shut down everything to filibuster a person (judicial nominee
Miguel Estrada) the American Bar Association has unanimously said is well
qualified?"

- Sen. John Breaux (D-La.)

Landrieu's Flip-Flop with a Twist

Acknowledging that a campaign ad did run on her behalf last year indicating
to the Hispanic community her support for judicial nominee Miguel Estrada,
Louisiana Sen. Mary Landrieu nevertheless went into Tasmanian devil
hyper-spin on Wednesday.

"My campaign ran an ad that was intended to convey only that I did not
oppose (Estrada's) nomination," she told the Washington Times.
"Unfortunately, some of my supporters in the Hispanic community who helped
us produce this commercial misinterpreted my neutrality as a statement of
support."

Uh-huh. Sure.

Republican National Committee spokesperson Sharon Castillo put it best in
response, saying, "She lied to the (Hispanic) community, and now she's
turning back on the community that helped elect her." Castillo added that
this was yet "another example of Democrats saying anything to get elected."
Yup.

Actions Have Consequences

"Political observers recently highlighted the aggressive and partisan
approach Senate Democrats took during the first few weeks of the 108th
Congress. Overlooked in these commentaries was the galvanizing effect the
Democrats' behavior had on Republican unity in the U.S. Senate. This
surprise byproduct of the minority party's antagonistic strategy could have
long-term implications for the operation of the Senate, an institution
historically associated more with lone rangers than team players."

Cleaning Up Bubba's Korean Mess

"The (Clinton) administration promised North Korea huge amounts of food and
energy in return for a pledge to stop developing nuclear weapons. North
Korea accepted the food and fuel, and kept right on making weapons of mass
destruction. When this was discovered in 1998, Mr. Clinton blustered but
did nothing. Today, North Korea is openly building more nuclear bombs.

"...Confronted with the original North Korean challenge, Mr. Clinton used
Jimmy Carter to broker a deal that supposedly stopped Kim Jong-il's nuclear
program. When he realized it had done no such thing, he dithered some more
and then left the whole mess for the new Bush administration to cope with as
best it could."

The Chutzpah King

Former commander-in-briefs Bill Clinton has recently been making the TV talk
circuit again, and is, as usual, reminding us why the jackass is his party's
mascot.

The guy who was completely duped by North Korea over its nuclear development
program, trading food and other assistance for...well, nothing...now advises
the Bush administration to offer the extortionists a "grand bargain" to
settle the issue. Yeah, we're sure they'll keep their word THIS time,
right?

On the matter of the terrorist responsible for Sept. 11, Clinton declared,
"We talked about bin Laden four out of five days for the last three years I
was president. I had the same level of obsession with bin Laden that I
think a lot of the current administration has with Saddam Hussein."

Um, exactly. ALL he did was *talk*. Unless you count firing some expensive
missiles into the middle of the desert, blowing up nothing but camels and
tents.

Of course, the big difference between Clinton's "obsession" and that of the
Bush administration is that our current president, like the fabled Canadian
Mounties, is gonna get HIS man.

Then there was his little dust-up with CNN's Judy Woodruff. You'll recall
that the Clinton White House was the most Hollywood-obsessed administration
in history. Yet in response to Woodruff's question about actor Richard Gere
's criticism that Clinton had done little to combat AIDS while in office,
Bubba replied, "I think that's the silliest question I ever heard, and I don
't blame Richard Gere, because he is an actor. He doesn't know."

>From the guy who considered the goofy Barbra Streisand a top, deep-thinking
political strategist.

He also thinks Hillary would make a "great" president. Perish the thought.

Ghost of Democrats Past

"The Democratic Leadership Council, in a critical report on the party's
weaknesses, said yesterday that voters believe the Democrats care more about
taxes and spending than they do about national security and family values. .
. . Written by DLC founder Al From and its president, Bruce Reed, the memo
bemoans what it calls 'the Democratic Party's losing image.' 'Your most
formidable opponent isn't Bush or your fellow contestants for the
(presidential) nomination. Your real enemy is the ghost of Democrats past.
'"

- Washington Times, 2/13/03

Speaking of Ghosts from the Past

"Former Illinois Sen. Carol Mosley-Braun plans to file papers for a
presidential exploratory committee early next week, a spokesman said
yesterday. Her entry into the 2004 presidential race will expand the
Democratic field of candidates to seven."

Canadian Club

"Amanda Sousa, a self-styled 'pacifist' from Canada, was shocked and
appalled when her seven-year-old daughter brought home her spelling
assignment. One of the words on the list was gun. No, we're not making this
up; it's in the Ottawa Citizen:

"'I realize people hunt in this area, but I still don't think that warrants
the teaching of this word to my daughter or any other child,' said Mrs.
Sousa. . . . Mrs. Sousa wrote a letter to her daughter's teacher describing
her views on the word gun, her unease with any child learning to spell the
word, a few alternatives, and the wish to speak to the teacher about its
inclusion on the list.

"'The word gun is synonymous with death. I'm racking my brain trying to
figure out why a seven-year-old would need to learn this word,' said Mrs.
Sousa. . . . 'I don't think this is an issue of political correctness. It's
an issue of protecting your child from violence. Guns are violent. End of
story,' said Mrs. Sousa.'

"The Upper Canada School Board actually gave in to Sousa's demand and banned
the word. Occasionally we hear from Canadian readers upset that we make fun
of their country. But how can we help it when Canadians so often play to
type?"

Two New "Muth's Truths"

Can reciting a children's rhyme about catching a tiger by the toe be racist?
And more importantly, is it actionable in a court of law? Find out in this
week's Muth's Truths column, "Junk Racism Meets Junk Lawsuit."

And against my better judgment, I recently weighed in on the abortion
debate, specifically on a measure dealing with parental notification
introduced in this year's Maryland legislature.

The Goldwater Doctrine

"I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more
efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote
welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to
repeal them. It is not to inaugurate new programs, but to cancel old ones
that do violence to the Constitution, or that have failed in their purpose,
or that impose on the people an unwarranted financial burden. I will not
attempt to discover whether legislation is 'needed' before I have first
determined whether it is constitutionally permissible. And if I should later
be attacked for neglecting my constituents' interests, I shall reply that I
was informed their main interest is liberty and that in that cause I am
doing the very best I can."
