it's in North Korea."

Hollywood's Deep Political Thinkers

"Richard Gere's analysis of the war was: 'I keep asking myself where all
this personal enmity between George Bush and Saddam Hussein comes from. It's
like the story of Captain Ahab and the great white whale from Moby-Dick.'
Gere refused to comment when asked whether he had read Moby-Dick.

"Fresh from receiving a lifetime achievement award for his geopolitical
insights, Dustin Hoffman said that Bush 'has taken the events of 9/11 and
has manipulated the grief of the country, and I think that's reprehensible.'
He explained that 'this war is about what most wars are about: hegemony,
money, power and oil.' Hoffman refused comment when asked to spell
'hegemony.'

".(Janeane) Garofalo has said that 'dropping bombs on the Iraqis is not
going to disarm Saddam.' No, it will kill him. That's good enough.

"...In addition to increased 'chatter' from these casting-couch
philosophers, Iraqi intelligence has been keeping an eye on a gas explosion
on the Senate floor. Not a celebrity except for the substance abuse, Sen.
Teddy Kennedy (D.-Mass.) was lowered by crane to the Senate floor last week
to denounce the case for war. Secretary of State Colin Powell was just
wrapping up his presentation to the United Nations when Kennedy began his
rebuttal. (Kennedy's position on Iraq is: Let's cross that bridge when we
get to it.)"

Nitwits of the World Unite!

"Every major 'anti-war' demonstration to date, including the demonstrations
on the Capitol Mall in October and January has been organized and controlled
by a self-styled Communist group called the Workers World Party, and its
front 'International A.N.S.W.E.R.' . . . At the Mall (rally in Washington,
D.C.), the speakers - all selected by the Workers World Party - denounced
America as an imperialist aggressor and 'the axis of evil,' and called for
'regime change' and 'revolution' in the United States.

"...John Conyers, the ranking Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee was
a featured speaker at the Workers World Party 'peace' rally, as was former
Democratic Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney. Representative Charles Rangel,
the ranking Democrat on the House Ways and Means Committee sent a letter of
support.

"In a sister demonstration in San Francisco, also organized by the Workers
World Party, California State Senator, Democrat John Burton, told the
protesters that the President of the United States was 'full of s___' and
was 'f---ing America.'"

- Author/columnist David Horowitz, "The War Room," 2/13/03

The Return of the "Old Democrats"

"Americans are not ultraliberals, but the Democratic presidential candidates
are: All six candidates, with the possible exception of Mr. Gephardt,
support an unlimited right to every kind of abortion (Howard Dean, a
physician, says arguments against partial-birth abortions are 'an issue
about nothing'). They all support the University of Michigan's racial quota
system and favor increasing income taxes.

"Every Democratic presidential contender in Congress at the time voted for
Bill Clinton's tax increases and against George W. Bush's tax cuts. Mr.
Gephardt and Dr. Dean want to repeal the Bush tax cuts that have already
gone into effect. The Democrats stumping for the highest office in the land
are also against sensible reform. They all oppose school choice, no matter
how bad or dangerous the public schools the students are forced to attend.
They also are against individually owned Social Security retirement
accounts."

Gun Rights Hero Needs Your Help

"This week, (Texas) Rep. Suzanna Gratia Hupp (R) introduced HB 878,
NRA-backed legislation which clarifies that local governments cannot post
signs under the state's criminal trespass law to prohibit concealed handgun
licensees from entering public buildings," report the National Rifle
Association in its email update on Friday.

You may recall that Rep. Gratia Hupp lost her parents about a dozen years
ago in the Luby's massacre in Killeen, Texas when she was unable to defend
them against a guy who crashed his car through the restaurant and then began
shooting patrons one-by-one.

Suzanna's gun was locked safely in her car where it did her no good because
Texas law at the time prohibited concealed carry. Since that horrible day,
Suzanna has been an effective and outspoken champion of gun rights and is in
her second term as a Texas state representative. She is a true hero to many
of us.

Readers in Texas are urged to contact your State Representatives by using
the "Write Your Reps" feature located at www.NRAILA.org and urge them to
sign on as co-authors to HB 878. To view a copy of the bill, visit
www.house.state.tx.us.

The War on Smoking

"A New York court case prohibited smoking in one's own home. Various
jurisdictions made smoking a no-no in restaurants, bars, offices, stadiums,
dorms, government buildings, public transport, sidewalks and other public
spaces. Smoking has even been banned on old Beatles albums: The cigarette
has been removed from Paul McCartney's hand on the reissued cover of 'Abbey
Road,' probably for his own good.

"The frontier for anti-smoking nannyism is the attempt to make all outdoor
smoking impossible. Smoking on outdoor public property is banned in some
jurisdictions. Activists have targeted Manhattan's Central Park, presumably
because a gust of deadly secondhand smoke might waft into the window of a
distant apartment building and kill somebody."

- Columnist John Leo

The Word for Today: Assimilation

"Until recently, immigrants to our shores were eager to become full-fledged
Americans. And our public schools that taught only English did a splendid
job of assimilating them. This diversity within freedom, buttressed by
talent, hard work, and opportunity has made America the envy of the world.

"But today, some immigrants, notably self-appointed Hispanic activists, tend
to resist assimilation. They champion bilingual education, bilingual
ballots, and a bilingual lifestyle, all of which will make them less able to
enrich American society."

- Columnist Ernest Lefever of the Ethics and Public Policy Center

DARE to Fail

"The nation's most widely used substance-abuse prevention program, Drug
Abuse Resistance Education (DARE), has no effect on seventh-graders.

"Researchers found 'no significant differences' in illegal drug usage or
violence between DARE students and middle schoolers who didn't participate
in the program. It is taught by police officers in 80 percent of the
country's school districts."

- Washington Times, 2/11/03

More Failure in the Drug War

"...(T)he White House's Office of Management and Budget observes that the
Drug Enforcement Administration 'is unable to demonstrate progress in
reducing the availability of illegal drugs in the United States.' OMB also
found that the DEA lacks sufficient budgetary controls and that its managers
are not held responsible when they fail to fix problems."

- Reason Express, 2/11/03

Ending Reefer Madness

"President Bush's administration is going after California's medicinal
marijuana providers with a zeal that is appropriate for the pursuit of
Colombian drug cartels. . . . Who, I wonder, will stop this madness?

"For starters, Congress should move the country toward sanity by taking the
long overdue step of downgrading marijuana from 'Schedule I' of the
Controlled Substances Act. It makes no sense for cannabis to be ranked with
heroin, LSD, morphine and other drugs in Schedule I."

- Columnist Clarence Page

Libertarians vs. Conservatives

"Libertarianism is simplicity itself. It proceeds from a single, quite
beautiful, concept of the primacy of individual liberty that, in turn,
infuses notions of free markets, limited government and the importance of
property rights. . . . Sometimes these policies are argued in a totally
unforgiving way so that it's not easy to separate the lunatics from the
libertarians. But it's a snap to separate the libertarians from the
conservatives."

Savage Nation

"Welcome to a place where feminists rule over a demasculinized 'she-ocracy,'
where the Constitution is under assault from the 'red diaper doper babies,'
and where immigration is destroying America. Welcome to the Savage Nation.

"With a Bronx accent and a flair for outrageous putdowns, radio sensation
Michael Savage has in the past two years become the No. 4-ranked national
talk-show host, behind only Rush Limbaugh, Laura Schlessinger and Sean
Hannity."

- Washington Times, 2/13/03

Hasbians Coming Out of Closet

"If the lipstick lesbian was the gay icon of the '90s, these days she's been
replaced by her more controversial counterpart, the hasbian: a woman who
used to date women but now dates men. Though (actress) Anne Heche is the
most prominent example, many hasbians...are by-products of '90s liberal arts
educations. Caught up in the gay scene at school, they came out at 20 or 21
and now, five or ten years later, are finding themselves in the odd position
of coming out all over again - as heterosexuals."

- Columnist Amy Sohn in the February 10 issue of New York

Two New "Muth's Truths"

Can reciting a children's rhyme about catching a tiger by the toe be racist?
And more importantly, is it actionable in a court of law? Find out in this
week's Muth's Truths column, "Junk Racism Meets Junk Lawsuit."

And against my better judgment, I recently weighed in on the abortion
debate, specifically on a measure dealing with parental notification
introduced in this year's Maryland legislature.
