Imus Rips Rather a New One

"(Dan Rather's interview of Saddam Hussein) was gutless and cowardly. . . .
And treasonous. . . . It was beyond disgraceful. . . . Saddam Hussein came
off almost like Mother Theresa. . . . It was so disgraceful it was
repulsive. . . . Here's all you need to know about Dan Rather: When he
interviewed the first President Bush, he picked a fight with him. When he
interviewed Saddam Hussein, he spent an hour kissing his ass."

- Radio talk-show host Don Imus, 2/27/03

The Democrat Message

"Judging by the reception given to the candidates' speeches at the (DNC)
winter meeting (in Washington, D.C. last week), Democrats do have a message,
which can be summarized as: We really hate George W. Bush. The speakers who
got the biggest applause were those who took the biggest whacks at the
president."

- Columnist Byron York

And Love Means Never Saying You're Sorry

"(New York Democrat Sen.) Chuck Schumer has praised (judicial nominee)
Miguel Estrada's 'legal excellence,' but opposes him on purely political
grounds. Is that justified? Well, part of being a senator is never needing
justification for anything."

- Jonathan V. Last, online editor of the Weekly Standard, The Hill, 2/26/03

Can You Guess Where Denny's Head Is?

"Iraq does not present an imminent threat to our nation. . . . It has not
been demonstrated that Iraq possesses usable weapons of mass destruction. .
. . Further, if Iraq proves to have such weapons, this demonstrates only the
need for more inspections and should not be a case for war. . . .
Containment. Inspections. No war."

- Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio), The Hill, 2/26/03

Peacenik Teachers Taunt Military Kids

"Bloggers Joe Katzman and Trent Telenko pick up on a disturbing report from
WABI-TV in Bangor, Maine, that children of Maine National Guardsmen who've
been deployed to the Gulf have found themselves facing schoolyard
taunts--not from fellow students but from 'antiwar' teachers. Here's a quote
from the WABI report:

"'Alan Grover, WABI-TV: 'What the kids are facing is hearing that their
mother or father is a bad person for taking part in the confrontation with
Iraq; comments that are coming from teachers. That's according to officers
with the Guard's Family Assistance Program who've been traveling throughout
the state this week. The officers report that such incidents are relatively
few in number but that they've occurred in practically every region of the
state.'

"'Maj. Andrew Gibson: 'Some kids have even reported that . . . teachers have
said things to them, specifically, about the . . . unethical nature of their
parent going off to fight.'

"Most of the children involved, WABI reports, are between seven and nine
years old."

Thompson vs. Sheen

"It's the former senator from Tennessee vs. the former honorary mayor of
Malibu. It's NBC's LAW AND ORDER vs. NBC's WEST WING.

"Starting this weekend, two peacock stars will be at media and political
odds when actor Fred Thompson launches an advertising campaign which
supports President Bush's position on Iraq, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned. .
. . The move comes just days after WEST WING actor Martin Sheen cut a TV
spot in which he implores fans and viewers: 'Don't invade Iraq. Inspections
work; war won't.'

"...In an interview with a local Memphis newspaper, Thompson did not hide
his disdain for what he considers WEST WING's preachy liberalism. 'I've been
thinking about the possibility of having my character run against Martin
Sheen (Bartlet) for president,' Thompson declared."

OK, Everybody Got That?

"There are known knowns. These are things we know that we know. There are
known unknowns. That is to say, there are things that we know we don't
know. But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we don't know
we don't know."

- Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld at a recent Pentagon briefing

Liberal Hate Speech

Julia Gorin, writing in FrontPageMag.com, tells about an episode of some
show called "Becker," which we've never seen and stars one of those
looney-left limousine-liberal actors, Ted Danson. "Danson's title
character, a doctor, reprimands a sexually active teenager who refuses to
wear condoms," Gorin reports. "Upon hearing the teen's reasoning, Becker
answers, 'You just stooped to a level of stupidity reserved for Republicans
and other lower primates.'" What a schmuck.

Help On the Way for Colorado Students

"Colorado lawmakers are marching toward approving a sweeping statewide
voucher program that would allow low-income students to attend private
schools, even religious ones. . . . Colorado would join Florida as the only
states offering a statewide voucher program."

- Washington Times, 2/27/03

Death to the Death Tax

"The Death Tax continues to be one of the most hated avenues for government
revenue in America today. . . . The American people simply oppose on
principle the concept of anyone - even children of wealthy parents - being
taxed on the death of their parents.

"...Even in times of economic distress and budget deficits, the Death Tax is
simply one of the most hated forms of federal taxation. No matter what you
call the tax - death, estate or inheritance - people hate it when they first
hear about it. They hate it when they learn more about it. And they oppose
those politicians who want to maintain it."

- Pollster Frank Luntz

Gray Skies Ain't Clearin' Up

"An effort in California to recall Democratic Gov. Gray Davis has reached a
critical stage, as the secretary of state prepares to review the official
recall petition. Past California governors have been subject to
unsuccessful recall efforts, but this time may be different. Three-quarters
of Californians say Davis is doing a lousy job."

- CNSNews.com, 2/27/03

Cutting Taxes, Not Principles

"It's hard to cut principles in half and have anything left. The principle
is that you should tax income once. It's hard for me to see, since we are
fighting for the broad principle here, that there's anything to do but stick
to principles."

's plan to eliminate the double taxation of dividends, The Hill, 2/26/03

NASCAR Families

"Forget about two-income couples, angry white men and soccer moms. The next
big voting block will be NASCAR families. That prediction comes from John
Warner IV, the filmmaking son of Sen. John Warner (R-Va.). 'NASCAR is huge,
' said young Warner, whose new documentary on the life of Wendell Scott, the
first black stock driver, premiered this week on the History Channel."

- "Open Secrets," The Hill, 2/26/03

The Goldwater Doctrine

"I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more
efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote
welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to
repeal them. It is not to inaugurate new programs, but to cancel old ones
that do violence to the Constitution, or that have failed in their purpose,
or that impose on the people an unwarranted financial burden. I will not
attempt to discover whether legislation is 'needed' before I have first
determined whether it is constitutionally permissible. And if I should later
be attacked for neglecting my constituents' interests, I shall reply that I
was informed their main interest is liberty and that in that cause I am
doing the very best I can."
