The Flat-On-Your-Back Tax

"The manager of one of Nevada's finest brothels proudly walks the 297 acres
that surround The Resort at Sheri's Ranch, pointing to the $7 million
expansion that opened last year. She glows when talking about the sports
bar, the themed bungalows, the Jacuzzi rooms. 'Business is good,' says
Laraine Harper.

"So good that several influential Nevada lawmakers think the industry should
do more than fulfill sexual fantasies. With the state facing a deficit of up
to $704 million, some legislators want to tax the fees of Nevada prostitutes
in what could be the ultimate sin tax.

"...The brothel owners are not particularly enthusiastic, either. 'What are
the girls going to do?' asked Geoff Arnold, president of the Nevada Brothel
Association. 'Have a calculator in the room? The girls aren't the best at
math.'"

They Don't Call Him "Butcher" for Nothing

"Does anyone still think that Saddam Hussein - who once promised an Iraqi
wife the return of her husband and the next day sent him home, cut into
filets as if they were steaks from Omaha, in a black body bag - is not the
evil monster of the Arabian nights?"

- Wesley Pruden, "Pruden On Politics," 2/28/03

Do It to Him Before He Does It To Us

"(W)hen people ask, 'What has Saddam done to us?' I ask, what had the
September 11 hijackers done to us before September 11?"

- Former Sen. Fred Thompson of Tennessee in a TV commercial countering the
anti-war drivel from another TV ad featuring actor/limousine liberal Martin
Sheen

Rules for Peaceniks

"Two rules of thumb for protest rallies: Always claim a crowd is 200,000 or
so larger than any reasonable estimate, and always insist your demonstrators
are all ordinary, stable middle-class folks."

Maine Ed Chief Calls for "Sensitivity"

Stories that some Maine teachers and other education "professionals" have
been taunting the children of Reserve and National Guard heroes caused the
state's Education Commissioner, J. Duke Albanese, to issue a memo to
superintendents and principals calling for greater "sensitivity" in dealing
with the pending military action in Iraq and the call-up of reservists. How
nice.

What he should have done was call for the heads of the lame-brained
"educators" who are telling these kids that their mommies and daddies are
war-mongering monsters.

Homeland Insecurity

"The Immigration and Naturalization Service last year removed only 13
percent of the illegal aliens not in custody but facing deportation orders,
and only 6 percent of those non-detained aliens from the seven nations
listed by the State Department as sponsors of international terrorism.
According to a report by the Justice Department's Office of Inspector
General, more than 350,000 non-detained aliens with deportation orders were
in the United States as of June."

Airport Insecurity - I

"My name is Andy Hays and I am a pilot with American Airlines. We recently
had a female pilot - in uniform - passing through airport security where she
was slated to fly the airplane on her regular three-day trip. As she was
having her carry-on bag searched, she inquired, 'What are you looking for?'
The response she received from the security [person]: 'Anything that you
could use to break into the cockpit.' Not only was she working the flight
but in her pocket, as is the case with all of us, was a cockpit key."

Airport Insecurity - II

"While going through St. Louis airport security, I was pulled out for the
'full search' procedure. As I sat down to remove my shoes, I noticed that
the man sitting next to me was about 90 years old, had two hearing aids, an
oxygen bottle and mask, and a walker. Since he was too frail to remove his
own shoes, the security guard had to help him."

Weapon of Mass Obstruction

Labeling President Bush's budget proposal "dead on arrival," Senate Minority
Leader Tom "Stonewall" Daschle (D-S.D.) said, "The president's so-called
stimulus package is nothing more than a sham, wrapped in spin, shrouded in
deception." Ah, ain't bipartisanship grand?

Voters Show Huge Support for Tort Reform

"The American Tort Reform Association (ATRA) today released the results of a
national poll that found eighty-three percent of Americans think there are
too many lawsuits filed in the U.S. and that greedy personal injury lawyers
are to blame. Tort reform enjoys broad bipartisan support as a way to curb
frivolous lawsuits. . . . The survey of 800 likely voters was conducted by
Mercury Public Affairs from February 15-17, 2003 and has a margin of error
of +/- 3.46 percent."

Small Gun Rights Victory in Texas

"On Tuesday, the Texas House Criminal Jurisprudence Committee voted 6-1 to
approve Rep. Suzanna Hupp's (R-Lampasas) HB 878, a bill clarifying that
cities and counties cannot use the state's criminal trespass law to post
signs prohibiting concealed handgun license holders (CHLs) from entering
public buildings.

"The Texas Municipal League was present in full-force at Tuesday's hearing
to oppose the bill. But thanks to our terrific witnesses who traveled long
distances in terrible weather to deliver excellent testimony to the
committee, our position prevailed in the first of many hurdles the bill must
overcome toward passage."

Black, White, Left, Right

"Better than watching the finale of 'The Bachelorette' - in which Trista
selected her stud - was the affirmative action debate between Andrew Hacker
and Ward Connerly at Amherst College last week. In this case, the pair
showcased brain, not brawn.

"Hacker is a scholar from New York, and Connerly is a member of the
University of California Board of Regents. They were at Amherst to discuss
affirmative action's impact upon public institutions, especially in college
admissions.

"Although a passionate opponent of racial preferences, Connerly came across
like a cordial dinner host. In his (sensible, compassionate, praiseworthy)
vision, all Americans should enjoy a good seat at the table. 'Civil rights
aren't just for black people,' Connerly explained. 'They're for all of us.
And the day that I laugh because some ... white person says, 'Look I've been
discriminated against,' is the day that I expect you to demean the
discrimination against me.'

"Conversely, Hacker opined that affirmative action is 'as American as apple
pie,' but the way he framed his argument made me want to skip dessert.
Holding true to his belief, he made his point by bad-mouthing a white man
(Antonin Scalia), a black man (Clarence Thomas), and a woman (Barbara
Grutter)."

The Goldwater Doctrine

"I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more
efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote
welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to
repeal them. It is not to inaugurate new programs, but to cancel old ones
that do violence to the Constitution, or that have failed in their purpose,
or that impose on the people an unwarranted financial burden. I will not
attempt to discover whether legislation is 'needed' before I have first
determined whether it is constitutionally permissible. And if I should later
be attacked for neglecting my constituents' interests, I shall reply that I
was informed their main interest is liberty and that in that cause I am
doing the very best I can."
