America's Best

A California mother whose son is right now in Kuwait poised to knock Saddam'
s block off, wrote her son asking how he would feel if she joined other
relatives of service members in an anti-war demonstration in Hollywood last
month. After reading her son's response, she elected not to participate.

Dog Tags Across America

"As a former Army and Army reservist, starting yesterday I found my old dog
tags and am wearing them outside my shirt in public. It made quite a
statement as I went about my job. When asked, I said that I support our
troops as a veteran and that I totally support President Bush and his
efforts to keep America secure. I'll end the conversation with never again
do I want to see on TV what I saw on the morning of 9/11."

Oh, Here's a Shocker

"Many Democratic critics of President Bush's war plans in Iraq did not
express the same reservations about President Clinton's military actions in
Kosovo in 1999."

- Washington Times, 3/8/03

Still Eatin' Dem Sour Grapes

"Ever since President Bush's controversial victory in the 2000 election,
die-hard Democrats have dreamed of revenge for the Clinton impeachment.
Now, as the country braces for war, some liberal Democrats in Congress are
preparing to introduce articles of impeachment against Bush and perhaps
members of his Cabinet, according to lawmakers and congressional aides.

"...At least one senior House Democrat has produced a draft impeachment
resolution. It accuses Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney and Attorney General
John Ashcroft of more than a dozen 'high crimes and misdemeanors,' including
bombing civilians in Afghanistan and constitutional violations in the
domestic war on terrorism."

- National Review columnist David Enrich

A Little Catsup With Your Crow, Senator?

"(Florida Democrat Sen. Bob Graham) cast his 'nay' vote (on the Iraq war
resolution last fall) partly because an Iraq war would distract the
administration from the more important war on terror. . . . Rarely is a
political argument so directly refuted by a real-world event.

"In this case, it was the capture last weekend of Khalid Shaikh Mohammed,
the most important al Qaeda operative in the world, at the same time that
the United States is undertaking massive preparations for war in Iraq. . . .
Line up the crow, the humble pie and whatever else it is politicians eat
when an opportunistic argument collapses in plain view."

- Columnist Rich Lowry

Hispanic Clarence Thomas

"Democrats are using the filibuster weapon in an effort to prevent Miguel
Estrada from joining the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit on the
mere assumption that one day he'll get to the high court and prove to be a
'Hispanic Clarence Thomas.' . . . The fact is Democrats can't be sure Mr.
Estrada will be a 'Hispanic Clarence Thomas.' My guess is they don't want
Mr. Bush to be the first president to put a Hispanic on the Supreme Court.
If that's what's going on here, it is shameful and will come back to haunt
them."

- Columnist Morton Kondracke

It's the Spending, Stupid

An Associated Press headline on Saturday blared: "Budget office sees huge
deficits: Report may pressure GOP-led Congress to halt tax cuts." The story
noted that the deficit estimates "were about $50 billion worse" due, in
part, to "higher spending that Congress has approved."

So why, then, does the growing budget deficit mean cutting the voters' tax
cuts rather than cutting the politicians' spending increases? Inquiring
minds wanna know.

The High Cost of Lawsuit Abuse

"(A new report by the Department of Health and Human Services) clearly shows
how problems in the U.S. health care system have been worsening in recent
years due to a proliferation of lawsuits and massive payouts.

"From 1991-2001, the number of payments for malpractice claims against
doctors increased by more than 20 percent. The median payment more than
doubled - going from $64,000 to $136,000, while the maximum payment soared
from $5.3 million to $20.7 million. All of this is driving doctors out of
business and jeopardizing consumers' access to quality health care."

- Washington Times editorial, 3/7/03

Pooch Suit

"Remember Andrew Burnett? He's the guy who famously tossed Sara McBurnett's
dog into traffic, killing it, after she dinged his car three years ago.
Burnett is still in prison for the fatal pooch-pitching, but the San Jose
Mercury News reports he 'is suing the dead dog's former owner and the
Mercury News for causing him everything from mental anguish to
post-traumatic stress disorder over the matter.'"

Small Step In Right Direction

"A bill that would allow active and retired law enforcement officers to
carry concealed firearms outside their jurisdictions passed the Senate
Judiciary Committee 18-1 on Thursday, and it now advances to the full
Senate. The Law Enforcement Officers' Safety Act (S. 253) exempts qualified
current and former police officers from state and local bans on carrying
concealed weapons."

Right Proved Right...Again

"Low-income pre-schoolers and young teens are not negatively affected if
their mothers go to work, according to a new federal study whose results
bolster the argument to demand welfare mothers work more hours."

Tax Me More, Feed the Poor

New Hampshire Governor Craig Benson announced that he is setting up a
special "Tax Me More" account for those who feel that their taxes aren't
high enough.

"The voters spoke loud and clear last November: No income tax, no sales
tax, no tax increases, no way. I have put forward the first budget in a
long time that controls spending and lowers taxes. But every now and then I
hear someone wants to spend more money or raise some tax," said Benson. "I
can certainly respect a difference of opinion and I want to accommodate
those who feel that their taxes aren't high enough. That's why I am setting
up the 'Tax Me More' account for those people who want to pay more in
 taxes."

Anyone wishing to pay higher taxes can make their checks payable to "The
State of NH / Tax Me More Account" and mail their checks to Administrative
Services, Room 120, Statehouse Annex, Concord, NH, 03301. All voluntary tax
payments should be accompanied by the "Tax Me More" tax form. Copies of the
form are available the Governor's Customer Service Department and can be
obtained by calling (603) 271-7626.
