Run Hillary, Run

"If a (Democrat presidential candidate) favorite other than (Al) Sharpton
doesn't become obvious by late fall, look for a strong effort to draft Sen.
Hillary Rodham Clinton. . . . The Iowa Democratic Party is already thinking
that. We hear it wants Clinton as the featured speaker at an annual fall
event - an invite that's irked Sen. John Kerry."

- Columnist Paul Bedard, "Washington Whispers," U.S. News & World Report

Bogus Hispanic Groups

"To be sure, some well-heeled Latino groups have joined the fight to keep
(Miguel Estrada) off the court, but these lobbyists do not speak for
Hispanics. Rather than grass-roots, member-supported organizations,
Estrada's opponents are liberal interest groups who fill their coffers with
huge grants from the Ford Foundation, AT&T, and a handful of other fat-cat
organizations.

"...They do not represent any portion of the (Hispanic) population. They are
activists who take huge checks from liberal foundations and gigantic
corporations. . . . In essence...Estrada's opponents are a handful of
liberal lawyers who rely on a few left-wing deep pockets and have bamboozled
big companies out of millions."

- Columnists Christopher Morris & Timothy Carney in National Review Online

Peaceniks Destroy 9/11 Memorial

"Antiwar protesters burned and ripped up flags, flowers and patriotic signs
at a Sept. 11 memorial that residents erected on a fence along Whittier
Boulevard (LaHabra, Calif.) days after the terrorist attacks in 2001 and
have maintained ever since. However, although officers witnessed the
vandalism Saturday afternoon, police did not arrest three people seen
damaging the display because they were 'exercising the same freedom of
speech that the people who put up the flags were,' La Habra Police Capt.
John Rees said Monday. 'For this to be vandalism, there had to be an
ill-will intent,' he said."

Let Freedom Ring

"U.S. Rep. Bob Ney, R-Ohio, chairman of the Committee on House
Administration, has ordered that all references to 'French Fries' be
replaced with the words 'Freedom Fries' wherever they appear on the menu in
the restaurants operated in the Cannon, Longworth and Rayburn House office
buildings. . . . Ney also ordered that the phrase 'Freedom Toast' be used in
place of the traditional 'French Toast,' in a letter to the U.S. House's
chief administrative officer, who oversees the operations of the food
service facilities."

- Peter Roff, UPI's Capital Comment, 3/11/03

Open Mouth, Shoot Foot

"A Democratic congressman who opposes the liberation of Iraq is blaming the
Jews for threatening Saddam Hussein's hold on power. 'If it were not for the
strong support of the Jewish community for this war with Iraq we would not
be doing this,' the Connection newspapers of northern Virginia quoted Rep.
Jim Moran as saying last week.

"...Moran offered this Trent Lott-style 'apology': 'I should not have
singled out the Jewish community and regret giving any impression that its
members are somehow responsible for the course of action being pursued by
the Administration, or are somehow behind an impending war.' In other words,
he regrets giving the impression that he meant precisely what he said."

No Victory, No Peace

".(D)espite the U.N.'s professed aversion to war, what it really seems to
object to is victory. In the U.N.'s 58-year history, two wars have been
waged under Security Council auspices: Korea and the Gulf War. Both ended
with less than total victories, leaving in power two of the worst tyrannies
on earth, which are now two of the world's most dangerous rogue states.
U.N. peacekeeping operations, too, are at best a mixed bag, with a record of
failing to prevent such horrors as the Srebrenica massacre and the Rwanda
genocide."

Just Win, Baby

"There's probably not much that President Bush can say or do to convince the
world's population - and most Democrats - that he's not a reckless and
arrogant foreign policy cowboy. He's just going to have to win the Iraq war
in short order and with minimal casualties, hope that Iraqis dance in the
streets, and then start swiftly building democracy in the Middle East. . . .
In the end...what counts is whether the United States wins a clean victory
in Iraq and uncovers a vast cache of illegal weapons, and if it can set up a
stable government."

Chirac's Little Girlie Game

"George W. Bush and Tony Blair appear to be on to all the nuances of French
conniving. Hence the new resolution, which they know will fail, but will
expose the ultimate goal of the axis of weasels, which is not to force
Saddam to disarm, but to enable him to reveal the United States as an
atrophied giant, George W. as Gulliver tied down by the pygmies. Nice work
if he could get it, but George W., it is coming clear, has been on to M.
Chirac's little girlie game from the beginning."

- Wesley Pruden, Pruden On Politics, 3/11/03

Ugly Protests Against Naked Aggression

"Many of my fellow warmongers have mocked the nude protests mounted by the
women of California's Marin County, cruelly pointing out that many of the
bits on show are excessively saggy. But I'll take what I can get. If we have
to have an incoherent, anti-Western 'peace' movement, then women showing off
their hooters in support of a culture that would stone them to death for
showing off their ankles is about as good as it's gonna get."

Freedom "OF" Religion

"It's not religion that the First Amendment bars in government but any
establishment of it: a government church. It explicitly guarantees freedom
of religion."

ACLU's Noogie Patrol

"The American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada filed a federal lawsuit
Thursday against the Clark County School District claiming that the School
Board's refusal to ban prayers at graduation ceremonies violates the First
and 14th Amendments. 'A graduation is a ceremony controlled by the school
district, and a prayer offered in that context is unconstitutional,' ACLU
attorney Allen Lichtenstein said.

"...Clark County administrators review graduation speeches ahead of time,
but that doesn't mean that a student won't slip in a prayer anyway, (school
district attorney William) Hoffman said. 'What are we supposed to do if a
student says a prayer up there, pull the plug?' Hoffman asked. 'Should we
wrestle the student to the ground and give him a noogie?'"

The Goldwater Doctrine

"I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more
efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote
welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to
repeal them. It is not to inaugurate new programs, but to cancel old ones
that do violence to the Constitution, or that have failed in their purpose,
or that impose on the people an unwarranted financial burden. I will not
attempt to discover whether legislation is 'needed' before I have first
determined whether it is constitutionally permissible. And if I should later
be attacked for neglecting my constituents' interests, I shall reply that I
was informed their main interest is liberty and that in that cause I am
doing the very best I can."
