************************************ JC Goes to GOPAC Former Rep. J.C. Watts, Oklahoma Republican, has been tapped as the new top dog at GOPAC, the candidate training organization started by former Delaware Gov. Pete du Pont and immortalized by former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. In it heyday, GOPAC was extremely effective in developing a "farm team" of Republican candidates - candidates who eventually succeeded in wresting control of the House of Representatives in the historic 1994 elections. It' s also where our buddy, Rich Galen, launched his widely-read "Mullings" cyber column (often quoted here in News & Views. But GOPAC has lost a step or two in recent years. Here's wishing J.C. much success in resurrecting this extremely valuable organization. And speaking of training, today's News & Views comes to you from beautiful, downtown Munster, Indiana, where I'll be joining a crack team of campaign instructors from the Leadership Institute dishing out pearls of wisdom to a roomful of conservative activists who, I'm sure, will soak 'em up like a SpongeBob SquarePants. But no, the weekend seminar is NOT being held in a pineapple under the sea. For those of you who aren't able to be with us over the next two days, I've included a couple of "Campaign Hot Tips" at the end of today's issue. *********************************** Go Forth and e-Multiply If you know someone who might like to receive News & Views, you can sign 'em up at: http://www.chuckmuth.com. Indignity "The spraying fountain in San Francisco's United Nations Plaza is used as a toilet, bathtub and crack den more often than a soothing place to relax and read a book. That, city officials say, is why they fenced it off Tuesday and are considering removing it after battling for years to keep it clean and safe." - San Francisco Chronicle ************************************ Getting US Out of UN Is it time for the U.S. to say adios to the U.N. and serve 'em eviction papers? Find out in this week's edition of "Muth's Truths" at http://www.chuckmuth.com/muthstruths.htm *********************************** "Peace" Ain't All It's Cracked Up to Be "Peace is important, but is peace without freedom acceptable? The Soviet Union was at peace between the two world wars and from 1945 until its collapse in 1989, and in those times managed to shoot, starve or kill in the gulag more than 20 million of its own people. In Chairman Mao's Cultural Revolution, China killed and starved many millions more. Pol Pot in a Cambodia at peace killed two million Cambodians. Zimbabwe is at peace, but dictator Robert Mugabe is starving his subjects. North Korea is at peace, and enslaving and starving its people. "Iraq is, likewise, oppressing its people. To quote columnist Andrew Sullivan, 'War is an awful thing. But it isn't the most awful thing.' Enslaved peoples and peace without freedom are worse." - Former Delaware Gov. Pete du Pont ************************************ Mother of All News Stories "As war appears imminent, there is a particular group of people who are getting the jitters, full of nervous anticipation about what's to come. They're wondering if all their training will pay off, if they've got the proper equipment and if they've adequately planned for every contingency. We'll find out shortly, for the media will soon get the green light to begin 'Operation Infinite Coverage.' "...Peter Jennings is preparing the perfectly rumpled shirt...in a futile effort to try and fool us into believing that a Canadian is actually losing sleep over any of this. "Dan Rather is working on the granddaddy of all metaphors. . . . . Dan is now...staring into a mirror and practicing lines like, 'Hussein's regime collapsed like the four-inch heel on an Anna Nicole Smith pump' and 'the planes are buzzing over Iraq like flies on a Texas cow flop.' "...The folks at CNN are frantically trying to figure out whose side they're on...and Larry King is ironing his suspenders, which lately always seem to match whatever color-coded threat level we're on. "...Fox News is going full-scale leg wax and lip-gloss for this one. The women of Fox, who are responsible for more hearts skipping a beat than a cheap methamphetamine lab, are gearing up the short skirts and push-up bras to make this a war to remember." - Columnist Doug Powers, WorldNetDaily.com ************************************ Saving the Whales to Kill Them "A Boston Globe editorial argues against oil exploration in the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge. The paper argues against it on the basis of damage done by drilling on the state's North Slope. Among the complaints: 'The noise of exploratory drilling and other activities has forced bowhead whales into more distant migration patterns, which has hurt hunting of the whales by natives.' So the Globe wants to kill more whales?" - James Taranto, Best of the Web, 3/12/03 ************************************ Bill of Regulations "Although you'd be hard-pressed to find any language in the Constitution authorizing such a thing, Congress is now entertaining a 'Cell Phone User Bill of Rights' that would impose a variety of new mandates on the wireless industry. Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY) has proposed the measure as a way to 'foster competition,' 'improve disclosure' and '[make] it easier for consumers to choose plans.' "Hmmm . . . perhaps Sen. Schumer is not talking about the same cell phone industry that the other 137 million of us currently subscribe to in America because it is difficult to see where the crisis is here. Consumers aren't clamoring for federal regulation, and why should they? Today, almost all Americans have a choice of at least three cellular providers in their communities, with most having five or six to choose from... "Moreover, this latest 'Bill of Rights' proposal is another slap in the face of the Founders' original Bill of Rights, which helped secure our genuine rights against government interference. Sen. Schumer's proposal, by contrast, is really a Bill of Regulations that invites more government activism and intrusion. . . . Such proposals assume we have a God-given right to things we have no right to whatsoever. Congress should spend less time penning new Bill of Rights' proposals and start doing more to honor and restore the Founders' original 10." - Adam Thierer of the Cato Institute, New York Post, 3/12/03 ************************************ Deteriorating Union Movement "The latest statistics released this month from the U.S. Department of Labor indicate 2002 was another dismal year for labor unions. Private sector unions lost more than 400,000 jobs. Only the public sector gained union jobs. At no time in the last 50 years have unions represented a smaller percentage of the American work force than today." - Stephen Moore of the Club for Growth ************************************ Oink, Oink "Have you noticed that male chauvinism is making a comeback? . . . It's as if millions of American men...took a look at the lifestyle prescribed by modern feminism and decided, 'No thanks, we'd rather be pigs.' Considering that for at least a generation polite opinion has been unanimous in the view that women should not be objectified, this chauvinist revival is astonishing." - Columnist David Brooks, Atlantic Monthly, April 2003 ********************************* Beating Their Brains Out "(Democrats last November) let ourselves get pummeled from far-right talk radio and now, talk TV. Folks, we all love NPR and the News Hour with Jim Lehrer because they are truly full of information and 'fair and balanced.' But now, 2.4 million people watch The O'Reilly Factor and 1.7 million watch Hannity & Colmes - Fox is beating our brains out night after night. It is time to fight back. Rush Limbaugh is a 'big fat idiot', but he is no wimp and he spews forth his factless venom every day." - Democrat media consultant Peter Fenn, "Lessons Learned from the Last Election," Campaigns & Elections magazine, February 2003 ********************************* Teamster Hissy Fit "Somewhere, Teamsters are throwing hissy fits because, thanks to (White House adviser) Karl Rove, Republicans mounted an unprecedented turnout effort that rivaled even the best union efforts." - Republican media consultant Kim Alfano, "Lessons Learned from the Last Election," Campaigns & Elections magazine, February 2003 ********************************* Cookie-Cutter Political Ads "In many respects political advertising has become a lot like fast food. Generally speaking it's cooked up in a hurry, and tastes and smells the same every time. In fact, it's become so similar in look and feel that voters are having difficulty telling one candidate's ads from another. It's time to realize that having a great message is useless if nobody is interested enough to hear it." - Republican consultant John Brabender, "Lessons Learned from the Last Election," Campaigns & Elections magazine, February 2003 ************************************ Goin' Negative "(V)oters like candidates who actually listen to their problems. But don't listen to them when they say they do not like negative advertising. Negatives DO work. And even when everyone you know tells you that you look mean, elections are about choices. Voters need information to make those choices. So stick to your plan, and if negatives (or comparatives) are called for, then don't fear them. If you win, the negative memories fade quickly." - Jeffrey Pollock, "The Ten Commandments of Campaigning," Campaigns & Elections magazine, February 2003 ************************************ NEW! 4.75 cents-per-minute Long Distance * All state-to-state calls in the continental U.S. * Residential or commercial * 6-second billing increments * 24 hours/day * 7 days/week * No access codes * No minimums * No activation fees * Calling Card Rate is 10 cents per minute * No monthly service charge unless your bill is less than $20.00 a month (then a $1.99 service charge will apply) * No need to change your local phone company * No hassles * Easy sign-up. * And a small portion of each bill goes to help continue publishing our FREE Chuck Muth's News & Views e-newsletter.
