The Hunt for WMD's

A speaker on an audio tape who may or may not have been the real Saddam
Hussein sought to rally Iraqis against the U.S. this weekend and demanded,
"Where are these weapons of mass destruction?"

Who's this guy think he is, Howard Dean? And isn't it just a little
disconcerting that the Hussein regime appears to be reading directly from
the Democrats' strategic talking points?

Or is it the other way around? Hmmmm.

Hoping for the Worst

"(Democrats are) crossing their fingers that the economy stays bad for the
next year and a half, which is a kind of sick and twisted way for politics
to work."

- Jonathan Collegio of Americans for Tax Reform, Washington Times, 7/5/03

Getting It Exactly Right

"As an Evangelical, I must protest the idea of staying home on election day
for ANY reason," writes Christie Knowles of Milledgeville, GA. "It's far
better to have SOME of the cake than throw it all to the pigs. I fail to
grasp the rationale of this viewpoint."

Bingo, Christie! Two gold stars.

Whose Mailbox Is It Anyhow?

The post office is floating a proposal that would require apartments to
increase the size of mailboxes in their buildings. It's been estimated that
such a mandate would cost the industry some $2 billion to make the changes.
And guess who would pay for it? You got it. Renters...in the form of
higher rent.

Our question is, if "your" mailbox is owned by the federal government and
the feds want the mailboxes to be bigger, shouldn't the POST OFFICE pick up
the tab? The case against the post office's monopoly on ownership of OUR
mailboxes gets stronger and stronger every day.

Billion Dollar Question

"I once had the opportunity at a debate on school vouchers to ask a lawyer
for the Texas Education Association a simple question, which to my
knowledge, has never been answered in anything close to a satisfactory way
by those supporting the government education monopoly:

"'The main argument against vouchers is that they take money away from
public schools. This is a true statement. However, they also take the kids
away from the public schools. If money is ostensibly going to public schools
in order to educate children, and the children are not there, why do the
public schools need the money?'

"As expected, after some hemming and hawing, he said something about
maintaining buildings and such and moved on to another question."

- News & Views reader Scott Markowitz of Spencer, Oklahoma

Education's Edsel

"All over the country, students, their parents and teachers are in an uproar
about the tens of thousands who flunked the test designated as the
requirement for high school graduation. . . . I'm going to venture the
heretical opinion that I sympathize with the students who flunked. After
the school failed to teach them to read, gave them good grades and promoted
them year after year, it's no wonder they feel cheated when they are denied
diplomas.

"How did anybody expect the students to pass their fourth grade, eighth
grade and 12th grade tests if they didn't learn phonics in the first grade?
Don't lay the guilt on the students; lay it on the system that failed the
students. . . . Teaching reading is not rocket science. Parents who care
about their children's education should teach their own children to read
using a good phonics system."

- Columnist Phyllis Schlafly

Testing the Teacher

"Teachers average pay in this country was recently published at $44,400.
That's pretty good pay by anyone's standard. Isn't it time they be held
accountable about how that money is earned? Lets not just test the
students, let's test the teachers."

Majority Gets It Right on Gay "Marriage"

"Most Americans say homosexual sexual relations are morally wrong, according
to public-opinion polls that have tracked such opinions for two decades, and
they oppose homosexual 'marriage.' But a majority in such polls say
homosexual relations between consenting adults should not be against the
law.

"...Americans generally support some sort of domestic benefits to homosexual
couples, says Karlyn Bowman, a scholar at American Enterprise Institute
(AEI), which in May released a study about public attitudes about
homosexuality. 'But they draw the line at gay marriage.'"

- Washington Times, 7/5/03

Biblical View on Mixed Marriage

"What did God do to Moses' sister when she complained about him marrying an
Ethiopian woman? Gave her leprosy. We all came from the same two people,
Adam and Eve. It is man's own bias that causes hatred."

- News & Views reader Chuck Liffick

Miscegenation Nation

"I find it interesting that Bob Hurt, Dr. Williams, et. al., have basically
said my children are stupid. My wife is Puerto Rican, whereas I am totally
white. So we are inter-racial 'breeding,' and by Hurt's analysis my three
daughters should be stupid.

"My oldest daughter is bi-lingual, plays the cello, reads at an eighth grade
level, and is about to start introduction to Algebra: she is only nine and
about to go into 5th grade in a public school here in Utah.

"My second daughter is bi-lingual, reads at an third grade level, and has no
problem with complex addition and subtraction: she just completed 1st grade
and was essentially at the top of her class.

"My third daughter is almost two years old and is already showing incredible
intelligence.

"Now I admit that I am a little biased here, but from what I see they have
not been hurt by me practicing miscegenation. On top of that, I would marry
outside of my race again--just to piss off these people who think
miscegenation is evil."

Guess Who's Coming to Dinner

"Chuck, I just wanted to make a few comments on Mr. Hurt's comments. Note
that I am black and my wife is white. I am a Unix security engineer with a
background in satellite communications. As a black man with mixed children,
both of whom had IQs in the 130 and above range in grade school, I must
wonder where Mr. Hurt gets his facts.

"If he were to take a moment and step back into reality and note the
differences in the educational systems, he would immediately see the reason
for the alleged differences in what he calls intelligence. A great majority
of inner city schools are so poorly run that they aren't teaching anything,
while schools in many Asian countries (e.g. Japan, South Korea, etc) are
very, very rigorous, would explain the differences in the 'intelligence' of
the various races.

"This is the same rhetoric that was being spouted in the 1920s, 1930s and
1940s by confirmed racists like Margaret Sanger and Adolf Hitler. I hope
your breed is dying out, Mr. Hurt, because (based on your statistics), you
are on the back side of the bell curve. Does that mean you should be
'prohibited' as well?"

- News & Views reader "B.A."

[Editor's Note: Bob Hurt is also a HUGE champion of the McCain/Feingold
campaign finance reform law; once again proving that being a white guy with
a high IQ doesn't make you smart.]
