Mommies in Combat

"Have you heard of Army Sgt. Casaundra Grant? Probably not, because her
story has been largely ignored by the press. She's a 25-year-old single
mother who lost both of her legs during the Iraq war when she was
accidentally pinned under a tank. Her 2-year-old son 'prayed for her legs'
the first time he saw her stumps.

"Sgt. Grant is upbeat and grateful to be alive, reports the San Antonio
Express-News, but is this really the way we want to fight our wars, with
young mothers coming home in wheelchairs? By the way, has anyone noticed
how many of our women warriors seem to be single mothers?"

- Columnist Mona Charen

Bloody Battle Worth Fighting

"The Republicans should be willing to end the filibustering of judicial
candidates to preserve the Constitution from further evisceration, and if
that means a prolonged, bloody battle, so be it. It would be inexcusable to
allow Senate Democrats to bully them into settling for compromise nominees
who would further damage the principles that have made the United States
something exceptional in the history of humankind."

- Columnist Jay Ambrose

Useless Idiots

"Communism had its 'useful idiots.' These were people who believed whatever
communists said and were helpful in advancing their cause. In the Middle
East, the enemies of Israel, the United States and all things Jewish,
Christian and Western have far more useful idiots than communists ever
counted on."

- Columnist Cal Thomas

Dissing Sandi O'Connor

"In September of 2002, The Washington Times reported on the Luce Policy
Institute's new Headquarters' 'Women Hall of Fame.' Many women, including
Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, appointed by President Reagan and the first
woman to serve on the Supreme Court, were featured in the Hall of Fame. As
of June 23, 2003, Justice O'Connor has been removed from the Luce Policy
Institute's Hall of Fame. Her disregard for the Constitution can no longer
be ignored."

- Lisa de Pasquale, program director for the Clare Boothe Luce Policy
Institute

$10,000 Question

"Chuck: If Bob Hurt's way of thinking is accurate (banning inter-racial
marriages because it degrades the white gene pool), who do we either thank
or blame for the incredibly stupid Caucasian people that we encounter on a
daily basis?"

- News & Views reader David S. Tabeling

Makin' It Up as He Goes Along

"Just a note to reader B.A. who asked 'Where does Mr. Hurt get his facts?'
The fact is, he doesn't. Get facts, that is. What he does do is make up
numbers out of thin air and then challenges others to disprove them. And
what's also interesting is using this technique is something that Mr. Hurt
has in common with those that he probably hates more than anyone....the far
left."

Left Wing of the East Coast

"In electoral terms, Vermont is a polarizing state. It's the Hillary Rodham
Clinton of states. It has high negatives. It's not like Kentucky or New
Mexico or a gazillion others you've no particular view on. To most people in
Bush-voting states, Vermont is a province of Canada, and they don't mean
that in a good way."

- Columnist Mark Steyn

Breaking the Mailbox Monopoly

"Dear Chuck: Bigger mailboxes?? The only reason the post office wants
mailboxes bigger is so they can jam more of that crap in my face and get me
to pay for it indirectly through my taxes bailing out the post office! Let
the mailer of junk pay for the bigger boxes. Better yet they should pay for
the true cost of delivering it."

- News & Views reader J. Peter Holsman

What About Junk Snail Mail?

"With the telemarketers taking a MOAB in the face in the form of the
national Do Not Call list, the War on Spam is not far behind. But the junk
mail war? Not bloody likely to take a hit. The post office's excuse is that
they use junk mail, excuse me, mass postal marketing, to subsidize the
relatively low cost of a first class stamp. And something like 40 percent of
mail is in this category. At pennies a piece, my trash going out on Thursday
is double what it would be otherwise - and for which I am compelled to
practice recycling under penalty of a fine, which is another matter
entirely."

- News & Views reader Brad White of Boston, MA

Do As I Say, Dammit!

The enlightened ones running the government of the city of Rockville,
Maryland, determined that public art displays were absolutely necessary to
make the city a more livable place and attractive to new businesses and
residents. So it passed a "voluntary ordinance" encouraging developers to
add works of art in building plans.

Guess what? According to John Mouser, head of the city's Cultural Arts
Commission, not a single developer stepped forward to comply with the
"request." Seems the people who were actually laying out the money didn't
find public "art" quite as necessary as the people who love to spend other
people's money.

So what's a government bureaucrat to do? Well, "we decided to make it a
mandatory thing," says Commissar Mouser. Mandatory public "art"? And you
wonder why people have those bumper stickers that read, "I Love My Country,
But I Fear My Government"?

Consistency Required in Marriage Debate

"To oppose same-sex marriage effectively, you have to believe that marriage
is more than a contract between two consenting adults...that unmarried
cohabitation is wrong, even when heterosexuals do it. Lose those beliefs
and the case for marriage has been lost."

- Columnist David Frum

Marriage Proposal: Win-Win for All Concerned

"(I)n these times most folks just don't want to hunt down homosexuals any
more. . . . We need not make a mockery of marriage, the union of man and
woman, an honorable estate established long before the state was, if we
choose not to hound homosexuals.

"...Government can safeguard marriage and still tolerate people who are
different. We can just draw up a standard civil contract that lets
homosexual couples regularize their affairs - without confusing their
relationship with holy matrimony. Call it a partnership or corporation or
civil union, anything but marriage. That way, homosexuals would be
protected, and the institution of marriage respected."

- Columnist Paul Greenberg

Privatizing Marriage

"There is a solution that ought to satisfy both camps and may not be a bad
idea even apart from the gay-marriage controversy. That solution is to end
the institution of marriage. Or rather (he hastens to clarify, Dear) the
solution is to end the institution of government-sanctioned marriage. Or,
framed to appeal to conservatives: End the government monopoly on marriage.
Wait, I've got it: Privatize marriage.

"These slogans all mean the same thing. Let churches and other religious
institutions continue to offer marriage ceremonies. Let department stores
and casinos get into the act if they want. Let each organization decide for
itself what kinds of couples it wants to offer marriage to. Let couples
celebrate their union in any way they choose and consider themselves married
whenever they want. Let others be free to consider them not married, under
rules these others may prefer.

"And, yes, if three people want to get married, or one person wants to marry
herself, and someone else wants to conduct a ceremony and declare them
married, let 'em. If you and your government aren't implicated, what do you
care? . . . If marriage were an entirely private affair, all the disputes
over gay marriage would become irrelevant."

- Columnist Michael Kinsley
