Special Discussion for Harry Potter Fans

"Chuck: I was discussing your reference to 'she-who-shall-not-be-named' (a
certain former First Lady and U.S. Senator from New York) with my teenage
daughter. After consulting together on this, we think that she is much more
like a dementor than 'she-who-shall-not-be-named'. When she speaks, all
happiness disappears and it seems like she sucks the life blood right out of
a person."

- News & Views and Harry Potter reader Steve Peek (Editor's Note: Seems to
me you could make a case that ALL of the Democrat candidates running for
president are dementors.)

Pot Calling Kettle Black

"'It's time to tell the truth,' the Democratic National Committee urges in
an Internet ad, complaining about something President Bush said about
uranium. Yes, this is the same DNC headed by Clinton apologist Terry
McAuliffe; you'd think the president proclaimed, 'I did not have sex with
that yellowcake.'"

Dixie Twits Take Big Hit

"The Dixie Chicks dubbed its tour 'Top of the World.' But it appears as if
Natalie Maines' antics may be taking a toll on the country group, according
to the Dallas Morning News. The CD 'Home' had reached 6 million in sales
when, on foreign soil, Maines decided to slam the commander in chief. But in
the short time since then, the group's gone from selling 124,000 copies a
week to about 15,000."

Why Big Biz Luvs Medicare Drug Bill

"A good example of how businesses manipulate government for their own
benefit is the prescription-drug subsidy bill now before Congress. Although
marketed as a benefit for seniors, the true beneficiaries are big businesses
that would be able to greatly reduce the cost of their retiree health
programs. According to a July 2 report in the New York Times, Ford Motor Co.
alone would save $50 million per year.

"The New York Times notes that the biggest companies are mainly those that
still offer drug benefits to their retired workers and would save the most.
In the aggregate, they would save billions of dollars per year if the
federal government takes over a big chunk of their retiree health expenses
by paying for prescription drugs. That is why they are lobbying very heavily
for passage of the legislation. . . . In short, to increase their profits,
many of our nation's largest corporations are pushing a budget-busting
government spending program that eventually will lead to higher taxes on all
Americans."

- Columnist Bruce Bartlett of the National Center for Policy Analysis

Understanding Prescription vs. Generic

"The physical ingredients of the medicine are its cheapest ingredients. The
ingredient that costs millions of dollars -- sometimes hundreds of
millions -- is the knowledge gained from years of research, and trial and
error, which finally results in the creation of a new medicine. That is
what the price of the pills has to cover, if we expect investors to continue
to pour vast sums of money into drug companies that are trying to discover
new cures for such diseases as cancer, AIDS and Alzheimer's.

"Other companies, manufacturing generic equivalents, pay only the costs of
the physical ingredients, having copied the enormously expensive formula
free of charge -- legitimately after the patent has expired and not so
legitimately in other countries, where patent laws are not taken as
seriously as in the United States. The company that simply uses someone
else's formula free of charge can sell the same pill for 35 cents and still
make a profit."

It's the Economy, Stupid

"The liberal media and the Democratic presidential candidates jumped all
over the latest jobs report, which showed a rise in unemployment to 6.4
percent. Screaming for President Bush's head, liberals are trying to make
the case that failure in the economy will lead to the president's
re-election defeat next year - the same fate suffered by his father.

"But this group of harpies - the gang that can't shoot straight - is
overlooking a number of market-oriented signs that point to a robust
economic recovery. This resurgence is likely to begin in the second half of
this year, and reach full bloom in 2004.

"This crowd couldn't even get the jobs report straight. Outside of that
higher unemployment figure, big gains were registered by temporary workers
and the self-employed, both leading indicators of better jobs performance in
the future. Significantly, 251,000 people re-entered the labor force in
June, a confidence sign as hopes were raised by the new tax-cut package and
its promise of new employment."

- Columnist Larry Kudlow

Ending Separate But Equal...Again

"University of California Regent Ward Connerly will ask fellow regents next
week to cut funding and sponsorship of nonacademic events held for groups of
a specific race, ethnicity or sexual orientation -- the same proposal he
unsuccessfully advanced five years ago.

"Connerly, the architect of Proposition 209, which in 1996 banned the use of
racial preferences in university admissions, said events such as black
student orientations and Latino graduation ceremonies held at all nine
campuses of the university system are divisive and exclude the public."

- San Francisco Chronicle, 7/12/03

Equal Treatment = Racism; Now We Get It

"In a hastily arranged news conference Tuesday, black California businessman
and chairman of the American Civil Rights Coalition Ward Connerly came to
Michigan to try and seize back the initiative from a Supreme Court that only
three weeks ago made racial preferences the law of the land.

"Connerly struggled to make himself heard as members of the pro-preference
group Equality By All Means Necessary (BAMN) tried to shout him down. In a
surreal scene, students held placards in Connerly's face that read 'Boycott
segregationist Ward Connerly' and 'Don't come here and spew your racism' as
they yelled 'You suck!' and 'Bullsh**!' Inevitably, and absurdly, a white
student screamed at Connerly: 'You're a racist!' 'That's just plain silly,'
the black businessman replied."

- Henry Payne, National Review Online, 7/10/03
