Tube Tip

Yours truly will be making his Maryland television debut this Friday. This
will be my first TV gig since moving back East last fall. I'll be on
Maryland Public Television's "State Circle" at 7:30 p.m. (with a rebroadcast
Sunday at noon). Topic: legalizing slot machines in Maryland. Now, I
wonder where I'll come down on THAT issue. Check the Maryland TV listings
near you.

Tuesday Night on "Always Right"

Join us for a 60-minute interview with someone who REALLY knows the
ins-and-outs of this prescription drug debate, especially the area of
"re-importation." My guest this week is Grace-Marie Turner of the Galen
Institute and I'll ask her many of the questions that YOU all have forwarded
me over the past week.

Tune in Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. EST (or catch the re-run at 11:00 p.m. EST) for
"Always Right with Chuck Muth." The link to listen in is...

Anchors Aweigh

"The USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) was commissioned on Saturday, the Navy's
ninth Nimitz class aircraft carrier. Named for the 40th U.S. President, this
nuclear-powered vessel, which can operate for 20 years without refueling, is
expected to meet the needs of the Navy and our country for 50 years. . . .
The ship's motto 'Peace Through Strength' is taken from a September 24, 1988
radio address to the nation on foreign policy, in which President Reagan
uttered these words, 'If we have learned anything these last eight years,
it's that peace through strength works.' . . . The ship's newsletter is
titled 'The Gipper Gazette.'"

America the Beautiful

"Make no mistake of it: Where America goes, freedom thrives. Where America
goes, women's rights expand. Where America goes, things get better.
Naysayers will tell you that America is doing nothing but empire building.
That is nothing more than a cynical lie. Just as we freed France, Germany
and Japan, and gave them a right to abandon us when we needed them most, we
are bringing the same freedom to Iraq, Afghanistan and the rest of the
world. And we are doing it for all the right reasons. If that doesn't make
you proud to be an American on this country's 227th birthday, I don't know
what will. Let freedom ring, not only from sea to shining sea, but across
the world as well."

- MSNBC host and former congressman Joe Scarborough

Democrats United

"The Democrats are now more united on the war than they've been at any time
since that brief burst of bipartisanship immediately after Sept. 11. Trouble
is, they're united behind the views of Howard Dean, and that puts the more
mainstream candidates--John Kerry, Dick Gephardt and Joe Lieberman--in a
logically untenable position. All are now arguing against a war they voted
for."

- James Taranto, Best of the Web, 7/14/03

Um, Isn't This Hate Speech?

"Republicans appeal 'to the dark underside of American culture, to that
minority of Americans who reject democracy and equality,' NAACP Chairman
Julian Bond said yesterday at the civil rights group's 94th annual
convention. 'They preach racial neutrality and practice racial division ...
their idea of reparations is to give war criminal Jefferson Davis a pardon,'
Mr. Bond said during his welcoming remarks. 'Their idea of equal rights is
the American flag and Confederate swastika flying side by side.'"

- Washington Times, 7/14/03

How Did Sandi O Miss This?

"(T)he guarantee of equal protection (of the laws) cannot mean one thing
when applied to one individual and something else when applied to a person
of another color. If both are not accorded the same protection, then it is
not equal."

- Supreme Court Justice Lewis Powell in the landmark 1978 *Bakke* reverse
discrimination case

Thunder on the Right

"Conservative opposition to a prescription drug benefit within Medicare is
deepening, creating what may be the biggest rift between President Bush and
his political base since he took office.

"...Some conservatives warn that passage of a Medicare drug benefit may
leave grassroots conservatives unenthusiastic about Bush and Republican
congressional candidates in the 2004 elections. 'The White House and
Republican leadership have not accurately calculated the impact of this new
federal entitlement on our conservative base,' Rep. Mike Pence, R-Ind.,
says. 'For us to even appear to become the party of entitlements ... could
have a very negative impact on the enthusiasm of conservative voters in the
2004 election.'"

- USA Today, 7/13/03

Above the Law

"Both houses of Congress recently passed separate Medicare 'reform' bills
designed to provide prescription drugs to all seniors. But if the bills are
so good for the rest of us, why are lawmakers desperately trying to exempt
federal retirees, including retired members of Congress?"

- Columnists Robert Moffit and Derek Hunter

Pandering for the "Old Geezer" Vote

"The pre-election year push for a prescription drug benefit is nothing short
of blatant pandering by both parties for retirees' votes -- because the
elderly are the country's most powerful voting bloc. In the 2000 election,
almost 70 percent of those 65 and over voted. In contrast, only 35 percent
of those 21 to 24 voted.

"The shameless competition for the 'old geezer' vote is all about perception
and very little about substance. The politicians are preying on the
retirees' fear over the skyrocketing cost of prescription drugs. Despite the
media hype of a so-called 'crisis' over the increased cost of drugs, only 5
percent of Medicare recipients in 2000 had out-of-pocket drug costs
exceeding $2,000, according the Congressional Budget Office. Most retirees
have private insurance and Medicaid covers the drug costs for poor
 retirees."

- Columnist J.J. Blonien, GOPUSA.com, 7/14/03

CBS Tosses In a Ringer

"An elderly political activist who was repeatedly portrayed by CBS News as a
typical victim of the high cost of prescription drugs, now admits the
network 'probably' should have disclosed her lobbying interests during her
numerous on-air appearances.

"Viola Quirion, who favors the Medicare reforms that would provide elderly
Americans like herself with a federally subsidized prescription drug plan,
might not be considered a typical senior citizen to many people - given her
extensive political lobbying background, which includes advocating on behalf
of the Alliance for Retired Persons."

- CNSNews.com, 7/14/03

Fat Cats

"It is the Democrats, the party of the trail lawyers and unions, who are
dependent on 'fat cat' contributions."

- Columnist Rich Lowry

Herding Cats

"There is something harder than herding cats -- herding Republicans. As
California GOP Chairman Duf Sundheim is about to learn. Sundheim announced
Wednesday that the party will try to narrow the field of Republicans running
to one candidate if there is a special recall election to replace Gov. Gray
Davis. Give up."

- Columnist Debra Saunders of the San Francisco Chronicle
