CBS News correspondent Lesley Stahl got the short end of his temper yesterday when she was called a gutless, lying weasel for her last-minute cancellation of an appearance on his show. Mr. Imus was set to grill her about why retired terrorism official Richard Clarke was handed a 40-minute platform to launch rhetorical cruise missiles at the Bush administration on 60 Minutes without CBS disclosing that his book was being published by Simon & Schuster, owned by CBS's parent company. CBS representatives say the failure to disclose the corporate tie-in was an oversight, but Mr. Imus was having none of it. He also accused Ms. Stahl of being one of the more dishonest members of the media for serving up softball questions to Mr. Clarke. She did everything but slip her tongue in his ear, echoed sidekick Bernard McGuirk. No wonder Fox [News Channel] is killing (them) -- because people hate these people, said Imus. - John Fund, Political Diary, 3/24/04 MEDICARES APOCOLYPSE NOW Medicare's trust fund will become insolvent in 2019, seven years sooner than predicted last year, according to a new report by Medicare trustees that partly blames the prescription-drug bill President Bush signed into law last year. - Washington Times, 3/24/04 JESSES APPRETICE I have to admit, I havent been watching Donald Trumps The Apprentice, though my baby sister is hooked on it, along with a lot of other people. Anyway, apparently some gal named Omarosa Manigault-Stallworth was given the old heave-ho by The Donald in a recent episode. It appears her business skills - not to mention inter-personal skills - turned out to be a bit wanting. But even though she washed out at her chance to apprentice for Trump, there just might be a rosy future for her under Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton. See, after her firing, Manigault-Stallworth accused another contestant of using a racial slur against her. Good grief. You cant even have a ridiculous reality show these days without race-baiting. Give it a rest already, will ya. MORE RACE POLITICS It seems the black community also has its tights up in a twist over the gay community comparing its fight for gay marriage to the civil rights fight of days gone by. Rev. Clarence James, a black-studies professor at Temple University, said this week, When the homosexual compares himself to the black community, he doesnt know what suffering is. Yeah? Tell that to Mathew Sheppard. Meanwhile, religious right leader Don Wildmon is blasting Sen. Mark Dayton of Minnesota for accusing opponents of gay marriage of spewing hatred and inhumanity. This on the same day an anti-gay marriage rally in Minnesota featured a protestor holding a sign that read, Death Penalty for Homosexuals. Yeah, theres nothing hateful about THAT. What was Dayton thinking? MISPLACED PRIORITIES A CNN online poll asks Which concerns you more? Results: 54% say rising gas prices, and just 46% say threat of terrorism. To be sure, gas prices have gotten rather high of late. Also to be sure, these online polls are unscientific and not terribly meaningful. Even so, what the hell is wrong with these people? - James Taranto, Best of the Web, 3/24/04 PALESTINIAN MOTHERS DAY If there's one group of people who should be celebrating the death of Hamas founder and leader Sheik Ahmed Yassin, it is Palestinian mothers. Hamas has dispatched brainwashed, bomb-carrying Palestinian children to blow themselves up in order to murder Israeli children in homes, schools, buses, pizzerias, discos, cafes, ice cream parlors and shopping malls. . . . Palestinian mothers should welcome the death of this baby killer who was so cold-blooded that he looked at the children of his own people and saw only useful bomb-delivery devices for killing the children of another people. - Stephen A. Miller, Washington Times, 3/24/04 A TALE OF TWO TERROR STRATEGIES Can terrorism be defeated with subpoenas, dialogue and nuance, or are bombs and bullets required? The key issue in this election is whether we will continue waging war on terror, as Mr. Bush plans, or retreat to the failed legalistic approach of the Clinton years, as advocated by (former counter-terrorism chief Richard) Clarke and Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts. - Columnist Jack Kelly The Clinton administration approached terror as a law enforcement problem, not a national threat, which is precisely the strategy Democratic presidential candidate John F. Kerry would pursue were he to become president. At least that is the strategy he says he will employ today. Who knows what he'll propose tomorrow or next week? - Columnist Cal Thomas HOLLYWOOD PONIES UP FOR DONKEY NOMINEE John Kerry emerged from the primaries with his campaign's gas tank heading toward empty. But now Bush-loathers in Tinseltown are refueling him. Media Fund is a 527 group(which) has raised about $3.4 million since November 2003 to run anti-Bush/pro-Kerry ads in battleground states. It has disclosed contributions that show some familiar Left Coast names. Chevy Chase has handed over $2,500 to Media Fund. Kevin Bacon has coughed up $7,500. Paul Newman has forked over $25,000. And Hollywood executive Steve Bing has given $1 million. The Left Coast Report notes there are indications that Hollywood is warming up to Kerry as some celebs have taken to having their portabella mushrooms served with a side of ketchup. - NewsMax columnist James Hirsen ARLENS UNION ARMY An international labor union is urging its Democratic members in Pennsylvania to switch their voter registration to Republican to vote for Sen. Arlen Specter in his tough primary fight against conservative Rep. Pat Toomey, reported the Associated Press yesterday. Now...whats it say about a Republican candidate when the virulently anti-Republican labor unions are not only endorsing that Republican candidate, but are actually encouraging their Democrat drones to switch parties in order to support him? Methinks Specters decidedly non-conservative voting record may be catching up with him. And so is Toomey. The race, which a couple months ago was predicted to be a landslide victory for the incumbent, has closed to within single digits. The unions registration ploy has the smell of fear, big time. And the sharks are closing in. ____________________________________ THE (CAMPAIGN) DOCTOR IS IN! You cant change public policy if you dont change public officials.
