THE MARRYING MAN

(T)oday John Kerry accused President Bush of catering to the rich. You know, as
opposed to John Kerry who just marries them.

- Tonight Show host Jay Leno

AIR AMERICA FLOATS BAD CHECK

After just two weeks on the air, Air America Radio, the fledgling liberal talk-radio
network featuring Al Franken and Janeane Garofalo, appears to have encountered serious
cash-flow problems. The CHICAGO TRIBUNE is developing a story, insiders tell DRUDGE,
on how the network was pulled off the air this morning in Chicago and Los Angeles, the
network's second- and third-largest markets, because, the owner of both stations said,
the network bounced a check and owes him more than $1 million!

- The Drudge Report, 4/14/04

KOFI CHICKENS OUT

United Nations pooh-bah Kofi Anan said on Tuesday that the situation in Iraq was too
scary for him to re-establish a UN presence there anytime in the near future. And
John Kerry says he would fight the war against terrorists by working closer with the
UN? Lovely.

JER-RY! JER-RY!

"[The] applauding, cheering 9/11 families have turned the (9/11 Commission) hearings
into events that have the nasty whiff of Jerry Springer -- or an old-fashioned mob. .
. . The American people naively hoped to see a nonpartisan Warren Commission on the
9/11 tragedy, but instead they have gotten a Bush-version of the Clinton Impeachment
hearings"

- University of Virginia political scientist Larry Sabato

SO...WHERES JAMIES APOLOGY, HMMM?

September 11 commission member Jamie Gorelick, as deputy attorney general for three
years beginning in 1994, was an architect of the government's self-imposed procedural
wall, intentionally erected to prevent intelligence agents from pooling information
with their law-enforcement counterparts, writes Andrew C. McCarthy, a former chief
assistant U.S. attorney who led the 1995 terrorism prosecution against Sheik Omar
Abdel Rahman and 11 others.

That is not partisan carping. That is a matter of objective fact. That wall was not
only a deliberate and unnecessary impediment to information sharing; it bred a culture
of intelligence dysfunction. It told national security agents in the field that there
were other values, higher interests, that transcended connecting the dots and getting
it right. It set them up to fail, Mr. McCarthy said in an opinion piece at National
Review Online.

REPUBLICAN BEAUTY

The new Miss USA, crowned Monday night, says she will use her position to help
explain America's involvement in Iraq. What needed to be done had to be done,
Shandi Finnessey, who represented Missouri, told Reuters news agency at a party in Los
Angeles after her crowning as Miss USA. Miss Finnessey, a 25-year-old Republican,
also said she is totally single and looking. "

LATEST BATTLEGROUND RESULTS

I got a sneak peak at the results of the latest Battleground Poll yesterday. As
usual, the survey is filled with interesting material, but I was particularly struck
by the results from one question: What do you think is the number one problem for the
next president to deal with? What answer do you think got the highest response?

Terrorism/National Defense? No. Economy/Taxes? No. Unemployment/Jobs? No.
Education? No. Health Care? No. Moral/Religious Values? No. The #1 response
was...Other.

Huh? What else is there? Folks, there are WAY too many stupid voters out there. Be
afraid. Be very, very afraid.

MORE HORRIBLE NEWS FOR JOHN KERRY

Consumers went on a tear last month, boosting retail sales by 1.8 percent in a
performance that capped one of the most robust shopping quarters in years, the
Commerce Department reported yesterday. . . . The blowout sales gains were led by
record spending at hardware stores and took financial markets by surprise.

- Washington Times, 4/14/04

BENEDICT ARNOLD REPUBLICANS

The Virginia House approved by a narrow margin (52-46) a whopping $743 million tax
hike on Tuesday...thanks to 17 Republicans who turned their backs on the voters who
elected them and sided with the Democrats. The bill now moves to the Senate, where
Republicans are itching to raise taxes even HIGHER than their colleagues in the House.

Isnt it a shame the Libertarians cant get their political act together and actually
get candidates elected so wed have a credible alternative to the RINOs and Donkeys?

YOUR CALLS & EMAILS GET RESULTS

Houston school district trustee Dianne Johnson is now sending out a canned email
response to all of you who took time to write her about the districts compassionate
high standards plan of promoting students to the next grade level even if they failed
English or math. Its a polite, nice-sounding, butt-covering dissertation filled with
educrat mumbo-jumbo, including: What makes no sense is to keep a child who has
demonstrated good academic ability trapped in the ninth or 10th grade because he
hasnt mastered just one subject yet.

I guess because I dont have a PhD I cant understand how a child who fails basic
English has demonstrated good academic ability. Correct me if Im wrong, but that
sounds like a classic oxymoron.

In any event, thanks to everyone who took time to write Ms. Johnson...and
congratulations on getting her attention on this matter. Maybe theyll think twice
about this sort of thing in the future. For the kids sake...I hope so.

HELP WANTED

If you live in the Washington, DC, area, ProjectUSA is seeking volunteers to help
stuff envelopes tonight (Thursday) for a mailer into Utahs 3rd congressional
district. Thats the district of illegal alien amnesty champion Rep. Chris Cannon
(R-Mexico City). If you are willing to pitch in, call Craig at (202) 543 2323 for
more information. We understand there are space limitations, so call early. ProjectUSA

that a matricula consular card will NOT be accepted as proof of legal drinking age!

POST TURTLE TABOR

"Chuck, Nathan Tabor reminds me of a 'post turtle.' If you don't know what that
means, here's the explanation: When you're driving down a country road and you come
across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that's a post turtle. You know he
didn't get there by himself, he doesn't belong there, he can't get anything done while
he's up there, and you just want to help the poor stupid fool get down."

SPIT HITTING THE SPAM OVER TABORS NON-ENDORSEMENT

Seems weve really picked a scab by pointing out that our buddy Nathan Tabor has NOT
been endorsed by the College Republicans, despite that false impression given in a
press release posted on his campaign website. As youll recall, Michael McKnight, the
immediate past chairman of the North Carolina College Republicans, informed us on
Tuesday that the CRs absolutely have NOT endorsed Nathan in his NC-5 congressional
race.

Well, the Taborites really got their panties in a wad over McKnights statement and
tried to smear him on a North Carolina internet blog called NCRumors. In the rant -
filled with obvious inaccuracies - NCRumors attributes McKnights statement about the
non-endorsement to sour grapes over the fact that Tabors event at the CR convention
caused the beer party upstairs at the University Hilton to be delayed.

What? Well, for crying out loud! Im absolutely certain that McKnights statement
had NOTHING to do with that fact, but I gotta tell ya...if Nathan Tabors
long-winded hospitality speech delayed a beer party for a bunch of college
students...darn right Id be ticked off at Tabor, too! I mean, good Lord, wheres the
boys priorities? Politics be darned. Its Miller Time!

Anyway, McKnight has now responded to the NCRumors cyber-attack and debunked the usual
Tabor misinformation. You can read CR Chair Responds to Tabor Smear on the Tabor
Tales page at www.tabortales.com

TABOR CONSPIRACY EXPOSED

Mr. Muth: Way to go for exposing Nathan Tabor for the fraud he is! I saw your
posting from Former CR Chairman Michael McKnight. It looks like you're really getting
under Nathan's skin. Now, you should note that this website, www.ncrumors.com, is
operated by the Tech5 corporation (the consultants for Nathan's campaign). The editor
of NCRUMORS is Nathan's communications director. . . . Just thought you might be
interested. Keep up the great work!

JOIN NATE TABORS WORLDWIDE SUPPORTERS

The national Meetup.com internet project is organizing a Tabor for Congress Meetup
Day (http://ntaborforcongress.meetup.com/members/) for Thursday, May 6 at 8 p.m.
Meetup with other local supporters of Nathan Tabor, Republican from North Carolina,
to discuss organizing and mobilizing for the 2004 Congressional Election, reads the
announcement. Whos gonna be there? Tabor Supporters Worldwide (and friends).

Now heres the kicker: So far, 3 have signed up.

Is that sad or what?

But its even worse. Of the three who have signed up so far, one is his campaign
manager and another is his wife. So as of this morning, it appears Nathan Tabors
worldwide support (and friends) totals...one poor, lonely soul. I wonder if hes a
Maytag repairman?

NOT YOURS TO GIVE: PASS THIS ALONG TO YOUR ELECTED REPRESENTATIVE

Almost forgotten in the mystique of his legend is (Davey) Crockett's commitment to
the principles of limited government. An 1884 biography of Crockett by Edward
Sylvester Ellis published an account of a speech Crockett gave on his views on
government called Not Yours to Give. Rep. Ron Paul, a Republican of libertarian
bent, whose district includes some of the historic sites in the battle for Texas
independence, recommends it as a guide for how elected officials should interpret the
Constitution. Crockett's heroism at the Alamo is matched by the good common sense that
he exhibits in this excerpt from the Ellis book:

* * * QUOTE * * *

One day in the House, a bill was taken up appropriating money for the benefit of a
widow of a distinguished naval officer. Several beautiful speeches had been made in
its support. The speaker was just about to put the question when Rep. David Crockett
arose: "Mr. Speaker--I have as much respect for the memory of the deceased, and as
much sympathy for the suffering of the living, if there be, as any man in this House,
but we must not permit our respect for the dead or our sympathy for part of the living
to lead us into an act of injustice to the balance of the living.

"I will not go into an argument to prove that Congress has not the power to
appropriate this money as an act of charity. Every member on this floor knows it. We
have the right as individuals, to give away as much of our own money as we please in
charity; but as members of Congress we have no right to appropriate a dollar of the
public money. I am the poorest man on this floor. I cannot vote for this bill, but I
will give one week's pay to the object, and if every member of Congress will do the
same, it will amount to more than the bill asks."

Later, when asked by a friend why he had opposed the appropriation, Crockett said:
"Several years ago, I was one evening standing on the steps of the Capitol with some
members of Congress when our attention was attracted by a great light over in
Georgetown. It was evidently a large fire. In spite of all that could be done, many
houses were burned and many families made houseless. . . . The weather was very cold,
and when I saw so many children suffering, I felt that something ought to be done. A
bill was introduced appropriating $20,000 for their relief. We rushed it through.

"The next summer, when riding one day in a part of my district. I saw a man in a field
plowing. I spoke to the man. He replied politely, but rather coldly.

" 'You are Colonel Crockett. I shall not vote for you again.' "

"I begged him tell me what was the matter."

"'Well Colonel, you gave a vote last winter which shows that either you have not
capacity to understand the Constitution or that you are wanting in the honesty and
firmness to be guided by it. You voted for a bill to appropriate $20,000 to some
sufferers by fire in Georgetown.

" 'Certainly nobody will complain that a great and rich country like ours should give
$20,000 to relieve its suffering women and children, particularly with a full and
overflowing treasury,' I replied."

"'It is not the amount, Colonel, it is the principle. The power of collecting and
disbursing money at pleasure is the most dangerous power that can be entrusted to man.
. . . You will very easily perceive what a wide door this would open for fraud and
corruption and favoritism, on the one hand, and for robbing the people on the other.
The people have delegated to Congress, by the Constitution, the power to do certain
things. To do these, it is authorized to collect and pay moneys, and for nothing else.
Everything beyond this is usurpation, and a violation of the Constitution.'

" 'You have violated the Constitution in what I consider a vital point. It is a
precedent fraught with danger to the country, for when Congress once begins to stretch
its power beyond the limits of the Constitution, there is no limit to it, and no
security for the people.'

"Now, sir," concluded Crockett, "you know why I made that speech yesterday. . . . You
remember that I proposed to give a week's pay. There are in that House many very
wealthy men--men who think nothing of spending a week's pay, or a dozen of them, for a
dinner or a wine party when they have something to accomplish by it. Yet not one of
them responded to my proposition. Money with them is nothing but trash when it is to
come out of the people."

* * * UNQUOTE * * *

Following his death at the Alamo, the voters of Tennessee came to regret their
rejection of David Crockett. Indeed, they elected his son, John Wesley Crockett, to
his old congressional seat in the very next election. His father's life story is not
just one of sacrifice on the battlefield of the Alamo but also one of courage and
principle in the political arena.
