OPEN THE FLOODGATES

President Bush yesterday called on Congress to increase the number of Mexican
immigrants allowed into the United States, reports the Washington Times this morning.
The White House says it supports a reasonable increase in the annual limit of
Mexican immigrants and criticizes Congress for not passing his amnesty proposal,
blaming it on election-year politics.

I just do not understand the presidents tin ear on this issue. We have somewhere
around 8-10 MILLION illegals in this country right now...with no plan to enforce our
existing immigration laws...and yet the president wants to INCREASE the number of
Mexican immigrants allowed in the country? And at the same time, he doesnt
understand why his conservative base isnt with him on this one?

JOBS, JOBS, JOBS

The Democrats let fly a new TV ad yesterday criticizing the president for failing to
create enough new jobs. What the Democrats NEVER seem to understand is that
government doesnt create jobs, it kills them. Entrepreneurs and businessmen create
jobs. On the other hand, government policies wrapped in bureaucratic red tape and
high taxation cause many would-be job creators to just say, the hell with it.

The best way for politicians to help create jobs is to get out of the way and let
people like T.J. Rogers, CEO of Cypress Semiconductors, do his thing. In a recent
interview, Rodgers decried the anti-business climate in his home state out on the Left
Coast. The killer factor in California for a manufacturer to create, say, a thousand
blue-collar jobs is a hostile government that doesnt want you there and demonstrates
it in a thousand ways, through bureaucrats and regulations, the executive told Declan
McCullagh of CNET News.

Its even worse at the federal level. And the Democrats wonder why more and more jobs
are moving overseas?

FAMOUS LAST WORDS

With supporters like John McCain, President Bush cant afford many enemies.

- Former senior adviser to President Reagan Lyn Nofziger, 8/6/04

THE GOLDWATER DOCTRINE

I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more efficient, for
I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote welfare, for I propose to
extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to repeal them. It is not to
inaugurate new programs, but to cancel old ones that do violence to the Constitution,
or that have failed in their purpose, or that impose on the people an unwarranted
financial burden. I will not attempt to discover whether legislation is 'needed'
before I have first determined whether it is constitutionally permissible. And if I
should later be attacked for neglecting my constituents' interests, I shall reply that
I was informed their main interest is liberty and that in that cause I am doing the
very best I can.

- Barry Goldwater, The Conscience of a Conservative
