KISSING McCAINS YOU-KNOW-WHAT

Sen. John McCain is single-handedly responsible for the anti-free speech legislation
known as campaign finance reform which spawned the aggressive use of 527 organizations
in this years presidential campaign. President Bush is complicit in this
constitutional attack for signing that horrible bill. Both men were wrong then...and
theyre wrong again.

At McCains urging, the president has apparently now agreed to file a lawsuit against
the Federal Elections Commission for not shutting down 527 groups - especially the
Swift Boat Veterans for Truth which has devastated the Kerry camp with its ads
attacking Kerrys post-Vietnam anti-war activities.

McCain is also reported to be leaning hard on Bush to specifically condemn the Swift
Boat veterans ads directly, which the president hasnt exactly done...yet. But
considering how Mr. Bush has bent over backwards to do anything else McCain has
demanded, it would appear to be only a matter of time.

How sad. The nation deserves better than this.

RELIGIOUS RIGHT GETS IT WRONG

The statement reads: We recognize and respect that Republicans of good faith may not
agree with all the planks in the party's platform. This is particularly the case with
regard to those planks dealing with abortion, family planning, and gay and lesbian
issues. The Republican Party welcomes all people on all sides of these complex issues
and encourages their active participation as we work together on those issues upon
which we agree.

Level-headed. Common sense. Statement of the obvious. Who could argue with such
sentiment?

The Republicans drafting the official 2004 GOP platform up in New York, thats who.
This Party Unity plank was rejected by the social conservatives who are dominating
the platform drafting process. Apparently the religious right wont be happy until
they drive enough people out of the Republican Party to make it the minority party
once again. If Bush and the GOP lose in November, hell have folks such as Gary Bauer
and Tony Perkins to thank for driving away limited-government conservatives who are
uncomfortable with replacing the Constitution with the Bible.

LITANY OF THE UNKNOWN REPUBLICANS

The Kerry-Edwards campaign unveiled Wednesday a list of 29 Republicans it says agreed
to lead an effort to convince other GOP'ers to defect in November, reports UPIs
Peter Roff. However, unlike their counterparts over at Democrats for Bush - such as
U.S. Sen. Zell Miller and former New York Mayor Ed Koch - none of these supposed
Republicans are even close to household names...or even elected officials at the
dog-catcher level.

Pretty pathetic.

AD FINITUM

The safety nannies really built up a head of steam with their success in killing off
Joe Camel and other various cigarette ads. Now theyre targeting beer ads and fast
food ads. Is there any end in sight to these efforts to treat adults like kids while
at the same time assaulting free speech? Not likely. In fact, General Motors is the
latest victim.

You see, the safety nannies got their pantyhose in a twist over a Corvette commercial
showing a 12-year-old kid fantasizing about being behind a wheel of the sports car and
dreaming of driving like a race-car driver. The ad has been running during the
Olympics; or, I should say, had been runningcause the safety nannies pitched a fit
over the dangerous message the ad sent and GM caved in to the pressure. They pulled
the ad on Tuesday.

Thank goodness. Can you imagine the carnage which would follow when a nation of
teenagers see these ads and go out and buy $50,000 Corvettes and begin racing them
through our city streets?

THE GOLDWATER DOCTRINE

I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more efficient, for
I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote welfare, for I propose to
extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to repeal them. It is not to
inaugurate new programs, but to cancel old ones that do violence to the Constitution,
or that have failed in their purpose, or that impose on the people an unwarranted
financial burden. I will not attempt to discover whether legislation is 'needed'
before I have first determined whether it is constitutionally permissible. And if I
should later be attacked for neglecting my constituents' interests, I shall reply that
I was informed their main interest is liberty and that in that cause I am doing the
very best I can.

- Barry Goldwater, The Conscience of a Conservative
