for chaos: U.S. electoral system warned it 'can't
cope' as historic number of voters cast their
ballot 03 Nov 2008 The American presidential
election could descend into electoral chaos on
Tuesday as unprecedented numbers of voters turn
out to cast their ballot in a system that is
largely untested. The U.S. has an electoral
system that is not organised, designed or funded
to cope with 'anywhere near a 100 per cent
turnout', a director of a leading independent
electoral reform group has said.

expected to draw record number of voters to polls
03 Nov 2008 Election officials are braced for the
biggest election turnout in US history tomorrow
as voters finally deliver their verdict on Barack
Obama and John McCain to bring to an end a
gripping, two-year long campaign. The excitement
generated by Obama's candidacy is expected to see
between 130m to 140m Americans 'vote,' easily
eclipsing the 121m in 2004.

Lines Stretch to Eight Hours 03 Nov 2008 Early
voting has reached record numbers this year.
Including absentee ballots, 27 million people
have already voted. That's in spite of lines that
stretch on for hours... Rachel Maddow
<http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26315908/#27508339>discussed
the long lines -- eight to ten hours in some
places -- on MSNBC last night. While she admitted
that images of people waiting hours to vote was
inspiring, she reminded viewers that not everyone
has the time to do it. Long lines, she argued,
are a new kind of poll tax.

Refuses to Extend Voting Hours in Virginia 03 Nov
2008 The Associated Press is reporting that a
Judge has refused to order longer voting hours
and reallocation of voting machines in Virginia.
Last week the NAACP filed a lawsuit against the
Commonwealth and Governor Tim Kaine saying the
state was not prepared for Tuesday's election. It
said that there were not enough voting machines
for areas that predominately served
African-American voters. It also asked the
governor to extend voting hours from 7pm to 10pm.
The ruling from the judge today means that hours
will remain the same and no additional machines
will be added to five precincts named in the suit.

Clayton Election Boards Nix Longer Voting Hours
03 Nov 2008 (GA) Fulton and Clayton County
elections officials decided against asking for
federal permission to extend voting hours on
Election Day. The counties considered whether to
ask for expanded hours because of the heavy
turnout in early and advance voting. The Fulton
County Board of Registration and Elections [GOP
trolls] said Monday that the number of voting
machines is enough to handle the crush of voters.

Thousands of pages of voter information were
found lying along the shoulder of Interstate 4
this morning. The papers, all with information
about Hillsborough County voters, have been
cleaned up and taken to a Department of
Transportation maintenance facility for now, but
voting officials still don't know where they came
from.

Sues to Force Va. to Count Military Ballots That
Arrive Ten Days After Election 03 Nov 2008 John
McCain's campaign sued Virginia's electoral board
today, hours before the election, seeking to
force the state to count late-arriving overseas
military ballots. The lawsuit asks a federal
judge to order the State Board of Elections to
count any overseas absentee ballots sent by
November 4 and received by local election
officials as late as November 14.

McCain tries for an upset over Barack Obama. With
little sleep, McCain was darting through seven
swing states Monday, arguing that victory was
virtually at hand despite national polls showing
otherwise.

Seeks 'Bird Control' in Afghanistan --Wanted:
Falcons, Handlers For Mission in Afghanistan 03
Nov 2008 The U.S. Air Force is looking for a few
good falcons. Live falcons, that is, ones with
feathers and talons, the kind that hunt mice and
small birds. U.S. aircraft at the sprawling
Bagram air base in Afghanistan are coming under
increasing attack -- not from al-Qaeda or Taliban
fighters but from "many small songbirds, pigeons,
Magpies, Hawks and Black Kites," according to a
bid request for a "bird control services"
contract issued by the Army last month.

jack-o'-lanterns inked with the names of war
victims and charging that the war in Georgia was
part of an American plot to improve Senator John
McCain's electoral prospects. Most of the
demonstrators, men and women in their teens and
early 20s, said they held the United States
responsible for the war in Georgia, saying
President Mikheil Saakashvili of Georgia would
not have attacked the separatist enclave of South
Ossetia without express permission from American
officials.

on leaked call 03 Nov 2008 The federal Opposition

telephone conversation between Kevin Rudd and US
President [sic] George W.Bush found its way into
the media. Details of the call to discuss the
global financial crisis were reported on the
front page of The Weekend Australian last month.
The article, published on October 25, reported
that in a conversation about the global financial
crisis, Mr Bush asked the Prime Minister what the
G20 forum was. US officials denied Mr Bush asked
that question, rejecting that aspect of the
report's claims through an article in The
Washington Post. Mr Rudd's office has also denied
that version of events.

Goldman Sachs is on course to pay its top City
bankers multimillion-pound bonuses - despite
asking the U.S. government for an emergency
bail-out. The struggling Wall Street bank has set
aside £7billion for salaries and 2008 year-end
bonuses, it emerged yesterday. Each of the firm's
443 partners is on course to pocket an average
Christmas bonus of more than £3million. The size
of the pay pool comfortably dwarfs the
£6.1billion lifeline which the U.S. government is
throwing to Goldman as part of its £430billion
bail-out.

expanded American strategy of self-defence
aggression. The strategy, outlined by Robert
Gates, the American defence secretary, holds that
US forces have the right to attack a target in
any country, without notifying that government,
if the country is harbouring a threat to American
interests.
