Dear Friends, This administration made a decision, early on, not to do the ONE thing George W. Bush did right: replace all US Attorneys, no exceptions.
Bush replaced all of Clinton's US Attorneys with career Assistant US Attorneys, until the prospective US Attorneys were named by the White House. The latter were then nominated, and each one named as Interim US Attorney, replacing the temporarily appointed Assistant US Attorney. Bush/Cheney's were then each confirmed. The Clinton administration did it a little differently. Contrary to the propaganda, Clinton did not simply fire all those US Attorneys appointed by Bush I. Most of them left soon after January 20 (which is, or was, standard procedure). Those who remained were replaced when their successors were duly nominated, and their names sent to the Senate. Upon nomination, the incoming US Attorneys became Interim U.S. Attorneys in their respective districts. Then, when confirmed, usually two to four months later, they became presidentially appointed US Attorneys. THIS IS NOT WHAT THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION IS DOING. Obama is not naming nominees as Interim US Attorneys. Rather, he is leaving the old Bush incumbents in office until their successors are both nominated and confirmed. NO administration has ever followed this procedure before. That is why there is no end in sight to the delays. Whatever happened to that mantra of the primaries: "Change"? We must, once again, rally the troops and demand "Change" in our Justice Department!
