Here is John Ennis's amazing video of the cops' attack on students at the University of Pittsburgh:
http://www.johnennis.tv/blog/pittsburgh-goes-orwellian/ As you'll see, the students were (a) not numerous, and (b) not really doing much of anything, but sort of hanging out. And yet the cops were suited up for heavy combat (in some galaxy far, far away), and came down hard on.... nothing. They lobbed gas grenades, dragged people off, etc., as if there were a riot going on. But the only figures breaking any laws on that calm campus were the cops themselves. Having watched John's video, read Ian Urbina's coverage in the New York Times, at http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/25/us/25pittsburgh.html. That piece, "Protesters Are Met by Tear Gas at G-20 Conference," deals, sort of, with the city-wide brutality of the police, but it's so deeply buried between the lines that it requires a pick and shovel to discern it. Here, in its entirety, is the Times's account of what went down at Pitt: "On Thursday night on Forbes Avenue, hundreds of police officers carrying long batons fired smoke canisters that trailed in high arcs before landing among buildings at the University of Pittsburgh, including the one called Cathedral of Learning." Now, can you imagine what the coverage would be like if this had happened in Teheran?
