Don't brand Muslims as terrorists - IUML
Bangalore Jan 17:
Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) President and Union Minister of State for
Tourism Sultan Ahmed today took strong exception to branding Muslims as
terrorists.
''Muslims never encouraged or indulged in terrorists activities.
It is pitty to note that whenever terrorist activity takes place, the entire
Muslim community was blamed for no reason.
This should stop,'' he said, speaking at the valedictory of the two-day IUML
National Conference here. He said ''Muslims have also made sacrifices for the
country's freedom. They are working for maintaining national integrity.''
Calling upon the IUML members not to get disillusioned with such negative
remarks, he urged them to maintain unity and fight against terrorism and
protect the interests of the country. Stating that an awareness campaign would
be initiated to make workers acquainted of constitutional provisions like human
rights, he said the IUML was seriously considering to have a mechanism in the
national and international levels to protect Muslims from human right
violations. ''Formation of a Legal Aid Cell to provide legal assistance to
needy people in the community is in the pipeline,'' he added.
He said empowerment of women has become very importament and inview of the
impending constitutional changes providing special reservation for the women in
the Parliament and State Legislative Assembly seats, IUML could not keep aloof
from it.
IUML releases vision 2020;
to form national level think tank
Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) proposes to set up a national-level think
tank to create an organic intelligentsia ... IUML President and Minister of
State for Tourism Sultan Ahmed said today.
Speaking at the valedicatory of the IUML national conference here, he said the
conference had endorsed the Vision 2020 and it was proposed to include scholars
from different fields including theology. ''The proposed think tank is expected
to have a role in policy making. The activities would also involve regular
interactions with ulemas of different streams,'' he added.
Mr Ahmed said IUML would set up a research centre with state-of- the-art
facilities and properly updated data bank on various socio-economic indices of
the community like education, employment, poverty and standards of living.
Research in the fields like community history, migration studies, maritime
studies and electoral studies could also be promoted under the activities of
the centre.
The Vision 2020 also included establishment of archives and audio-visual
documentation centre, he said, adding ''it is a painful reality that Muslim
League so far has no centralised integrated documentation activities. Materials
on our party history are totally scattered or under individual possession. A
national level archives for the preservation of rare material with audio-visual
documentation unit seems to provide a real solution to this problem.''
IUML, VISION 2020 Document, unveiled
Bangalore: The All India IUML delegates
conference on Saturday sought speedy implementation of Sacchar
Committee and Ranganath Mishra Commission recommendations.
The two-day conference, which concluded here today, urged
government to enhance participation of Muslims in governance.
The conference adopted its "IUML Vision 2020" document
outlining the initiatives needed for strengthening the
organisation, striving for bettering the standards of living
of the community and resolved to promote establishment of
NGOs, besides its allied organisations.
"The proper political participation provides a necessary
influence and opportunity to change or at least to influence
events which enable our meaningful participation in the
political process. Current statistics show that the country is
far from attaining such a goal. Enhancement of participation
at various levels is the sole remedy to such a situation", the
document, unveiled by IUML National President E Ahmed, said.
The meet decided to launch a media cell in order to
counter the ''negative stereotyping and vilification of
Muslims'' in the media and also gave a clarion call to counter
the campaign of Sangh Parivar against the community.
"We should expose Sangh Parivar attempts to defame the
community, which is making baseless propaganda", Ahmed said.
"IUML continues its drive against extremism. It calls
upon all Muslims to abide by the law of the land. IUML will
not support violation of law of the land", Ahmed, also Union
Minister for State for Railways, told the 1000-strong gathering
that had converged from all parts of the country.
The Vision document appreciated the programmes launched by
the UPAgovernment for the welfare of Muslims.
IUML plans to set up a Research Centre and Data Bank
with state-of-the art facilities on various socio-economic
indices of the community like education, employment, poverty,
and standards of living, Ahmed said.
A Human Rights education and legal aid cell will also
be set up to provide legal assistance to needy people in the
community, he said.
The conference set a September deadline to set up its
youth and women wings and also a National level think tank to
guide the party on policy issues.
Ahmed asked all state units to undertake a membership
drive by August and present a report at the next All India
Delegates conference to be held in Kerala by that time.
