[31] More Becks on Keane

Posted Tuesday, September 3, 2002 by db:
"Roy has been magnificent all season and that is the sort of person and player he is.
When any player gets a certain amount of stick, or any situations go on, on or off the
pitch, you expect the other players and the manager to stick by you and that is what
we do. Whatever we think is right or wrong or whatever player has done anything in
games or off the field, the players rally round and all stick together and it stays in
the club."

[30] Stewart on Carlos and his own chances

"You talk about people who have been there, done it and

seen it and Roy's one of those people. Anything he says when he speaks to you then
you've got to listen. It's just like you when you listen to the gaffer or Carlos. They
have been there and experienced football and Roy's one of those people as well. When
he talks he's worth listening to. Football's full of opinions and people from other
countries are going to have different ideas of how it should be played. That's
interesting to hear what their thoughts are. Carlos is the same. Just because he is
not as well known over here you have still got to give him respect.. Carlos has
brought a different point of view to things like team-work and getting the ball back
which we lost last year.

It's always going to tough to play every game for Manchester United but you have got
to try and take it. John O'Shea has done very well for United I am looking to wait and
take the chance. I feel like I'm ready, but it's not as if the players ahead of me are
getting dropped. My long term future is to stay at Manchester United and do well for
them and in the next couple of months I might get a chance and do well so that will
give me more experience."

"We are totally behind him. In my view the referee let the first incident go when
Jason McAteer brought him down and the referee should have stamped it out there and
then. He let it go and you could quite clearly see something was going to happen Roy
shouldn't have lifted his hand up, but it wasn't as bad as people made it out to be.
Of course the lads are behind him. He is a captain, a great player, a great man and
Keano will get over these things. He has had it in the past and he'll handle it this
time no problem."

[24] Roy's Red record

Posted Tuesday, September 3, 2002 by db:
>From thisislondon.co.uk

Roy Keane's record of ill-discipline may have marred his reputation as one of the
world's best players but the Manchester United midfielder is not the worst red-card
offender to have played in this country. The Irishman trails in joint sixth place in
the hall of shame after his sending-off against Sunderland last Saturday. Further
down the standings is Arsenal's bad boy Patrick Vieira. His red card against Chelsea
at the weekend means he has now been sent off eight times. Both men have been sent
off about once a season with Keane getting his marching orders once every 47 games and
Vieira once every 42 matches on average. Neither have records to match the
ill-discipline of former Queens Park Rangers defender Mark Dennis or ex-Scotland
winger Willie Johnston. Willie Johnston (Rangers, West Brom, Birmingham, Vancouver
Whitecaps, Hearts) 21 red cards in 652 games (once every 31 matches) Roy McDonough
(Birmingham, Walsall, Chelsea, Cochester, Southend, Exeter, Cambridge) 13 r!
ed cards in 604 games (once every 46 matches) Steve Walsh (Wigan, Leicester, Norwich,
Coventry) 13 red cards in 609 games (once every 47 matches) Vinnie Jones (Wimbledon,
Leeds, Sheffield United, Chelsea, Queens Park Rangers) 12 red cards in 492 games (once
every 41 matches) Mark Dennis (Birmingham, Southampton, Queens Park Rangers) 12 red
cards in 325 games (once every 27 matches) Dennis Wise (Wimbledon, Chelsea,
Leicester) 11 red cards in 629 games (once every 57 matches) Roy Keane (Nottingham
Forest, Manchester United) 11 red cards in 520 games (once every 47 matches) Patrick
Vieira (Cannes, AC Milan, Arsenal) 8 red cards in 333 games (once every 42 matches)

According to the Israeli newspapers Maccabi Haifa will start today selling tickets to
their own fans for the home games in cyprus, which probably means that the Israeli
club don't belive anymore about the possibility to entertain their home games in
Israel. In the first day of selling tickets to the Haifa fans for the game at
old-trafford 2,000 were already sold and and the 1,000 remain probably will be sold
today. The jewish community in Manchester invited maccabi haifa to be their gusts when
the team will arrive to manchester. Eyal Berkovic in his weekly article in the Israel
leading newspaper said he is going to a lot of the United games in europe at
old-trafford and he can tell the haifa players that it is mighty experience!!! that
the haifa players can look forward to.

Review

Porno is a sequel to Trainspotting, and builds on the success of that caustic and very
funny novel by taking some of the characters through some radical new catastrophes.
Sick Boy returns to Edinburgh with his ventures as a pimp and hustler in London having
gone pear-shaped. Desperate for money, he comes up with a new idea, one that (he
hopes) will really rake in the cash: the production of a low-rent porn film. Now Welsh
introduces us to a new development: the novel’s Sick Girl, Nicola Fuller-Smith, the
object of Sick Boy's fevered lust, whom he also believes will be his passport to all
kinds of substance-abusing happiness - needless to say, he’s in for a rude
awakening....

Manchester United are looking for members to join the Fans Forum discussion group.
Because it is important to us that the fans' voice is heard the club is currently
seeking volunteers to sit as representatives on this season's Supporters' Consultative
Forum. For the 2002/03 season the Forum will have 16 representatives - one more than
in previous years. Rules stipulate that half of the 12 non-reserved seats must change
this season, leaving a total of seven vacancies (the three reserved seats are for
IMUSA, Shareholders United and the Disabled Supporters' Association). Four meetings
are scheduled for this season, and will be held on home match days. The club has
appointed Electoral Reform Services, not-for-profit balloting organisation, to
administer the process.

[8] More tripe from Sadarse
---------------------------------
Posted Tuesday, September 3, 2002 by db:
'The way things are looking now, Keane will not miss a single game for his outbursts
on the printed page and violence on the pitch. He will serve any consequent
suspension while recuperating from a hip operation for which he enters hospital today,
ruling him out of tonight's clash with Middlesbrough. That recovery is likely to take
until December at which stage, presumably, he will be fit and ready to take his place
in United's quest for honours in the Premiership and Champions League. And it STINKS.'

And on and on in all the papers this goes. Sadler dismisses the announcement of the
England squad compared to the villification of Keane. Bowyer and Woodgate must be
delighted they've got back in with hardly a whimper. Now which is the more sickening -
Keane or the fact that Bowyer will soon be wearing his national kit in a competitive
fixture whilst also about to face a civil court case.

It won't be this issue but next one we'll go right through the daft old sayings of SUN
reporter John Sadler who writes today that:

'THEY will roar his name around Old Trafford tonight, even though he won't be there to
hear it. The cry will swell until it reaches the very rafters of the Theatre of
Dreams: "Keano... Keano ... Keano." Thousands, blinded by unshakeable faith and only
too ready to continue their acclaim of the player who has dragged more unwanted
baggage into the dressing room than any Manchester United captain in history. Others
in the stadium will share the reaction that must be common among the vast majority of
right-minded people throughout the country. They will sigh in despair, disgust and
disbelief.'

We never forget what you said about Eric. To paraphrase: "he is like a dodgy washing
machine. Howard Wilkinson has got the deal of his life selling Cantona to United.
He'll be off in a year'

But don't worry, we'll get all the old quotes out...

[5] A Red Perspective
---------------------------------
Posted Tuesday, September 3, 2002 by db:
Open season once more at Manchester Utd

A contributor to Manchester Unitedís first fanzine, RedNews didnít even make it to his
Manchester newsagent on Sunday morning without an upbeat blue walking up behind him
with the question ìwhat about Roy Keane hey?î. The Utd fan replied, ìHeís from Cork.
He cost £3.75m from Nottingham Forestî, before disappearing leaving the blue silently
confused.

ìHeíll be crucified by the pressî, said Alex Ferguson on Saturday evening. Despite
being one of Fergusonís more obvious statements, the number of articles in this
mornings papers was surprising even by Utdís standards. No less than seven articles
in the Daily Telegraph, six in the Sun, five in the Mirror and two in the Guardian.
The usual anti-Manchester Utd stance adopted by no-mark former players writing in the
red top papers mean nothing. However, when the Telegraph reach new levels of ABU
(Anyone But Utd), you realise that things are getting out of hand.

Roy Keane is the most influential player ever to play for the club. Cantona provided
a catalyst for great things, but Keane has provided work ethic and inspiration on
every outing for Utd. Ask any Utd fan who he or she worries most about getting
injured and it will not be Van Nistelrooy, Veron or Giggs. It will be the number 16
from Ireland.

Apart from his own tireless individual performance, team mates listen to what he has
to say and have great respect. This in turn brings out better performances from the
majority of players. After Utdís exit from Europe last season, it was rumoured that
Keane launched a verbal and physical attack on Juan Sebastian Veron, questioning his
comittment to the club. Most clubs and players would not put up with this kind of
behaviour but at Utd when Keane talks everyone listens. This is a measure of how
important Roy Keane is to Manchester Utd.

His performance in Turin in the semi-final 2nd leg of the Champions League was nothing
short of magnificent. It was if after going 2-0 down and facing a huge task, Keane
had said to himself he was going to single handedly turn the game around. And that he
did with an incredible physical display and motivating captaincy that got the best out
of his players including an Andy Cole beginning to lack in confidence but in the dying
minutes able to score a goal from the tightest of angles.

Those who criticise Alex Ferguson for seemingly condoning Keaneís undoubted bad
behaviour at times on a football pitch should stop and think why he does this. In
Cantona, Ferguson realised early on that he had a player capable of winning matches
with individual performances. When Cantona launched himself into the Selhurst Park
crowd Ferguson knew that he faced his biggest challenge yet. How would he convince
one of his prize assets to stay in the game knowing that his very nature would always
throw up conflict and possible disrepute?.

Ferguson is an excellent man manager. He has proved with players like Jaap Stam and
Paul Ince that he will not be walked over, which is why many are surprised by his
individual attention to Cantona and now Keane. How can a man who will not have the
name of Manchester Utd dragged through the mud, who will not tolerate ill-discipline
at his club be seen to bow down to certain players?.

Firstly, players do not go unpunished. Ferguson has reportedly fined Roy Keane
£150,000 for his sending off at the weekend. What happened was wrong and even the
most biased Utd supporters secretly admit that at times Keane oversteps the mark. Of
course Ferguson has to be seen publicly punishing Keane for such ill-discipline. Much
as he did with Cantona, he accepted that what was done was wrong, but that is where
his public criticism ended and it is where his private rehabilitation with Keane will
begin once more.

Keane does not need internal hearings at Old Trafford. He knows what he did was wrong
and he will regret it. What he needs is the backing of his manager to return to the
team and put in further match winning performances. This is why Keane is at the club,
and it is why Cantona was such a precious commodity in the eyes of his manager.

After Keane was sent off after an incident with Alan Shearer at St Jamesís Park last
season, Keane reportedly quit the game. He realised he had a discipline problem and
had finally decided to give the game up. Ferguson let things simmer down and then
visited Keane and his wife at their home. It didnít take long to convince Keane that
football was his life and his style of play will always flirt with controversy. Keane
returned to Old Trafford under the watchful eye of his manager.

The footballing public together with journalists need to put things into perspective.
Roy Keane wears his heart on his sleeve and at times he will let himself down and the
supporters of Manchester Utd. After all, no Roy Keane for three games is a bitter
blow to the team and supporters. However, rather than succeeding in forcing some sort
of crisis on Manchester Utd and their supporters the public should beware that
historically the players most often criticised have a tendency to come back and haunt
those who post vitriol on them. Cantona returned to even greater popularity and
success with Manchester Utd and Roy Keane will too. The new banner at the Stretford
End this season saying Roy Keane:Adored in Manchester is only the beginning of the
support that Keane will enjoy from those who matter ñ manager, team and supporters.

Although it will turn out to be a long-living memory for Jason Macateer and the
Sunderland fans who cheered Keaneís exit like a Cup Final winner, Roy Keane will look
back on it and it will barely register. For Keane will have moved on to greater
things and events at the Stadium of Light will appear very trivial in comparison.

First Keane and now the Beckhamsí naming their new son Romeo. Who said the life of a
Manchester Utd fan is easy?.

The SUn along with many others go with the story that Keane is to go in for that much

say that this will mean, as he may not be back until December, that he is escaping the
FA ban from Saturday's sending off and any FA charges.

Er. So somehow missing over 10 games, a fairly significant amount of a too short

from the official site

"I thought we controlled the match at Sunderland on Saturday. But I felt that when we
didn't finish them off in the first half, like I felt we should have done, it gave
them hope. We could have been three or four up in the first twenty-five minutes! The
one thing about Peter Reid's teams is that they will always battle on, they've always
got the perseverance to keep going and going. Perseverance is a good quality to have
in a situation like that. I look at the league this year and I see there are many
teams with a great commitment to try and get results. I think it's going to be a tough
league.

We won't appeal against Roy Keane's red card, the referee had no choice but to send
him off. I have said recently the use of the elbow is a growing problem in our game.
Roy is the first United player to be sent off for this offence. The replay I was shown
immediately after the match was misleading. When I saw the TV pictures from a
different angle, I saw the referee had no choice. I still think it was petty rather
than grievous.

Roy had bother with his hip last season. I wanted him to take the summer off and have
an operation at the time, but we decided not to do it. It's a situation we are taking
game by game. He felt okay on Saturday. The injury could come back, we don't know. But
we're keeping our eye on it.

Nicky Butt did a bit of jogging on Friday and hopefully he'll be okay for Tuesday. We
certainly hope so because we have five or six injuries at the moment. But they'll all
come back fairly quickly. Gary Neville played in a reserve game on Thursday, he's
coming on quite well and should be back in a couple of weeks' time. Mikael came off
with a neck injury in the first half at Sunderland but he will be fine in a few days."

[39] Sven on picking Bowyer and Woodgate
---------------------------------
Posted Monday, September 2, 2002 by db:
"It's very good as now I am a free man to pick whoever I want. I agreed not to pick
them [before the World Cup] as I thought there would have been a lot of confusion
around the national team and that's not good. If Bowyer goes on playing like he is now
then he is very interesting. He is doing very well "It should be very bad of me to
judge a player without knowing him or having him in the squad. I'm not talking about
Lee Bowyer but, in general, you can always change. If you have done something stupid
in your life, it doesn't mean that you will necessarily do stupid things all your
life. I think it's a question we can talk a lot about. If someone has served his
punishment, you can't go on punishing them all their lives because they did something
they shouldn't. It would have been very difficult for me to take them to the World
Cup, it would have created a lot of problems. In terms of quality the squad would have
perhaps benefited but with the attention they would have got, Engl!
and would have been worse off."
