Please share the link with your network. I also offered a post on Medium
https://medium.com/@jbgumbystephens/civic-tech-success-and-challenges-one-
opinion-from-north-carolina-d5d7c33b00cb to focus on the key questions I
see for the future of civic tech relying on volunteers:

   1. Can civic tech be extended beyond large cities and counties?
   2. Can brigades attract more non-IT specialists and diversify the
   membership and interests of participants?
   3. Are brigades sustainable as volunteer-managed groups? (I’m aware that
a few of the largest brigades have compensated staff.)
   4. Is civic tech relevant to lower-tech and less well-resourced counties
and cities? (Let me add that a potential pitfall of civic tech is that it
is being labeled as yet another sophisticated city activity that is
disconnected from small towns and rural areas.*)*
   5. Should county and city governments pilot one or two datasets as open
data to gauge the community’s interest in civic tech?
   6. What range of relationships preserves the interests of both
government officials and civic tech volunteers?

I’ll be updating my thinking and exploring related questions via my work
website, https://www.sog.unc.edu/resources/microsites/civictech. I’m eager
to hear from folks!

John Stephens
