Hello Everyone,

This forum is very timely and I am excited to see where this will go
over time.  In the meantime, we have just deployed 6 Song Meter
Acoustic monitoring devices (for the first time)into the field for the
next month and a half.  Most of the conversation in this forum is
concerning other devices, so I was wondering what information there
might be out there for the Song Meter.  I have not done any in-field
recording or analysis of files before, so I have a few questions.

1.  I will be using the Song Scope software that is recommended for
use with the Song Meter.  Has anyone used it and if so what are some
parameters that I should be aware of for settings to help make the
initial assessment a little easier? I want to make sure that we are
picking up bird calls and not a lot of noise within the first week of
recording.  Otherwise I will move the units.

1a. Location of units-we will be placing some close to the ground and
others mounted hopefully along a roof line or water tower, or top of a
silo...are there any recommendations for best placement or cautions?
Heights for best collection?

2. Can I use another software program for analysis?

3.  At the end of the season we want to try and get as much
information regarding specie identification/use as possible.  Is this
something that I might be able to do having had no prior experience or
would it be more cost effective/timely to have someone with experience
do the data analysis for us?  If the later, who might you recommend?

4.  Are there any resources besides the Evans CD that I should use to
help isolate nocturnal migratory calls?

Andrew Farnsworth, you posted this reply:  I am interested in any info
you might have!!!  And from anyone else -David Martin-.  I am sure I
will have more questions as time goes on.
"David (Martin), I am pleased to hear that you are using
the SongMeter.  Cornell
has been working with Ian to develop a next generation "SongMeter"
unit, called the SoundCache, which we are now using.  It's a wonderful
device, and it has many useful features as you mentioned.  If any of
you are using these, Mike, Anne, and I may be able to provide some
useful suggestions about how to program the units, battery life,
storage space, etc.  I won't bore all of you with that now, but if
there is interest, we can provide info!"

And Thomas Fowler, did you work with these devices?  "I am a design
engineer recently (Feb 09) retired from the
Bioacoustics Program (BRP) at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology."  If so,
any thoughts?

Thank you in advance for any help.
