I wasn't expecting to hear many calls this morning, 9/23, with a very light,
warm wind slowly pushing tattered cloud cover out of the SW, counter to the
direction of migration. It was warm enough for katydids and crickets to be
loud enough to compete with distant bird calls. However, from 5:45-6:30
there were many calls, mostly of Swainson's Thrush. I stopped counting at
about 900 because my brain couldn't process calls at the rate of 4 or 5/sec.
and still tease out individual spp. Descent through clouds may have
increased the calling rate. Wood Thrush was again a distant second. I heard
one Veery call, only 5 calls of Gray-cheeked and a few calls of
Rose-breasted Grosbeak, plus many unidentified. Wood and Swainson's were
again vocal in the surrounding woods for a short time after sunrise,
starting to refuel in the spicebush understory.
