Very interesting that within short span of time, there was lot of impact to you. To tell you, within 10 secs' also your HDD can be clean. This is possible by simple foolproof trick of Microsoft Recycle bin. Usually when we delete file it directly goes and sit in recycle bin which will be done instantly. Windows will do this within less than a second. If the files/folders being deleted are more than the size of Recycle bin capacity, then certainly it will not move these into recycle bin rather remove these references directly from the filesystem table. So, all that am trying to tell you is that its always an internal but not any external person who can do this... Root cause is unintended or unexpected action performed without owners discretion. Better we also have inplace the access controls / confirmations along with data backup procedures...
