Now, I was able to create graphs like the one found by following the URL below, without any extra magic. http://lagavulin.it.helsinki.fi/~mjs/nfsen-channels.gif (The gaps in the graph don't have nothing to do with nfsen.) For some reason, I wasn't able to create the channels via the web interface. When using the nfsen's CLI, the channels were created and after that I was able to modify their parameters via web interface. And finally, perhaps this is already mentioned somewhere in docs, but I didn't see it and hopefully I've diagnosed this right. This may be due to a rather old rrdtool installed on the system I'm testing nfsen. The names of the channels should be such that rrdtool accepts them as names of data sources[1]. First, I had named the channels so that the names contained dashes (-) which resulted in no graphs and error message in logs saying "can't parse DEF". Then, I recreated the channels with dashes replaced by underscores (_) and now rrdgraph.php was able to produce graphs.
