How do I test php session handling?
How do I check backend/frontend versions? Is it this simple?

You have a problem with your session handling, or you have mixed up
different versions of backend/frontend.
Make sure session handling is working with your php version, and reinstall
nfsen. Do not mix different versions from
backend or frontend.
These two are the only option
