I have run sites with forums and it is a problem for moderation and quick dissemination of information. The mail list, such as this one is preferred. Having the mail list come to me in a gmail account gives me full text search capabilities that are difficult to beat in a privately managed site (try doing a search in nhforge.org to see what I mean).
