I agree with John. We get a lot of stuff for free with Google groups that we just can't do with forums. A lot of other projects use Google groups. If we're the odd project without a mailing list, we loose a lot of visibility. We'd end up with a very small group of cranky experts who are tired of fighting spammers and answering the same beginner question over and over.
