Peter, AFAIK, union-subclass corresponds to the Table Per Concrete Class/Concrete Table Inheritance ( http://martinfowler.com/eaaCatalog/concreteTableInheritance.html) pattern, which, as it name implies, only needs tables for the actual concrete classes. So, I assume it was a mistake.
